I cannot get the HP Scan function to work now that I have upgraded to Leopard. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the HP software. I currently have a LaserJet 2840 hooked up over a local ethernet. Basically, HP Scan starts and is running but the window for commands and editing does not pop up (just the HP Scan in the top menu bar)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

More info... it seems to be a problem with HP Director as I can access the full functionality of HP scan from Photoshop CS, just not from the Director. However, since I use director to scan in documents for PDF archiving, I am still up the creek... |

I have managed to gain access to HP scan through Photoshop Elements 4.0 as a workaround to HP Director. However, a 23 page document that I scaned, gave me 23 separate jpg files that I had to then combine in Adobe Acrobat, a very time consuming method! So far no one from HP has addressed the issue of loss of scanning capability through HP Director after Leopard has been installed. |

Having the same problem -- Leopard with a networked 2840. Printing seems to fine, but scanning fails. Got it to scan once (and freeze up three times) from Photoshop. |

I lost my scan capabilities when I migrated to Leopard, as well (I have a 4570c). I was able to solve the problem in the following way ... though your mileage may vary, of course.
1. Mount the disk image containing the HP scanner software. 2. Control-click to "show package contents." 3. Navigate within the package to a folder called "sub installers." There will be a series of installation apps in there, all of which work in Leopard. Run those, one at a time, and then you should be set. |

I am also running a HP 2840. The HP Scan software version is 8.1.0. It will launch and appears at the top of the screen, however the scan window never comes up. I am now only able to access that window through Photoshop Elements 4.0. |

Vincent, I know that the sub installer folder exists in different locations depending on the specific HP installer package that you're looking at, but I can't guarantee that it exists in all of them. I'd just search for a folder in the installer package that contains four or five .app files ... their names will be easily recognizable as installers for scanner drivers and software.
Again, though, I'm not sure if this trick works for every single HP scanner or multifunction product -- though I know it does work for some. Good luck!

Further things I have noticed...
I can scan through Readiris, Word, and Photoshop repeatedly and successfully, so I am still fairly confident the problem is not in HP Scan 8.1.0.
I looked through the install files and never found a more direct reinstall of HP Director. I did however discover that unlike some other folks I could not print. I uninstalled all HP software, then reinstalled and still couldn't print. (I am installed over a local network). I then tried to add the printer manually through the system preferences pane and was told that the HP Drivers were incomplete. Remembering that I skipped the installation of printer drivers from my OS install, I went back and installed them. I could then successfully add the printer and print, but HP Director refuses to use see the installed printer as available.
This is even more weird as I manually commanded the printer to see the location (10.0.1.X), and now the OS sees a printer at that location called "Cummings Mac Laserjet", while HP Director sees a printer at the exact same location called just "Cummings LaserJet" I even tried to force HP Director to use the same printer name that the OS had given it directly, but that only led to the OS deleting the name and going back to naming it via its address.
So basically we're back to HP Director as the problem, but at least I can print now... |

Hi Vincent,
I'm using the installer software for the 4570c scanner. Opening the package, I navigate to Contents, then MacOS, then Sub Installers. The individual installer apps are inside there.
I suspect the folder structure of different HP installer packages is different, and I have no idea where the driver apps are located in the package you're using, or if they even exist there. If not, I suppose as a last resort you could try running the installers found in the 4570c package or one of the others -- it might work, but I wouldn't necessarily bet on it.
Best of luck.

Also I have same problems after installing 10.5 with the HP2840 via network: Problem with HP Director and HP Scan = does not work, but printing is fine just with the 10.5 integrated drivers.
The following I learned from this useful discussions: HP information = will deliver update until end of year (see page 2 and 3) http://h41140.www4.hp.com/mac_connect/pdf/Mac_OS_launch_special.pdf
HP Director and HP Scan actually do have a problem together, but this workaround helps:
HP Scan works fine with Photoshop CS2 V9.0.2 it delivers full functionality as known under 10.4 the only weak point are single PDF's to be added into one doc with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 |

Me Too.
I have an HP3390, bought it new less than 1 year ago from newegg.. Now its rendered useless. I use the scanner all the time, but now it doesn't work..
I don't know who to thank more for this, Apple or HP.. I personally though Leopard was a waste of $120 even before I discovered this. Now it's knocked me dead in the water on something important to my job.
Please notify me (us..all of us) as to the status of this. Are you going to fix it or not, if so an estimate of when.
Thanks,

I would also appreciate an update on the ETA for these drivers. A company like HP should have the drivers (or at least a working beta) ready to go on the day of launch for such a widely publicized update as Leopard. Hopefully they will come out ahead of schedule, but this is very disappointing for a HP. Please post an update so that your users know what is going on. |

I have an All-in -One HP 3390 and have the same problem that is described here. The HP 3390 scanner will work if I access it through Read Iris 11.0--which is a very good application to have in order to save text-image files of scanned documents that are fully searchable in Preview or Acrobat. The only limitation is that Read Iris saves each page as a separate file, so you have to go through the hassle of combining the pages of a multi-page document in Acrobat. |

I just want to add is that I'm happy that I found this page. I've been trying to fix this problem by reinstalling, uninstalling, uninstalling manually, etc. It resembled an earlier problem I had with my 2840 when I first installed it while using Jaguar. Now I know the new problem is a result of Leopard. I hope HP will come with a solution soon. |

This is very frustrating.
I understand that this was a fairly major OS upgrade, but I never thought that I would lose all the scanning functionality. My 2840 is critical to my paper flow process and I'm without it now.
Luckily, we have a few network attached copy machines that enable me to scan right to my network folder.
Come on HP, give us something. I just need to get HP scan up and running! While your at it, can we get the 'Scan To' functionality to work like it does on a Windows machine? While the system is serviceable on the Mac, it was awesome on Windows. |

The program starts up then two messages follow: 1. Unable to connect to device 2. Unable to communicate with TWAIN data source
Hope anyone can help me out. Waiting until december will make me an unhappy HP client. |

I have a ScanJet 3970 and after installing 10.5 and checking top, I found LaunchCFMA taking 2.3% of the cpu time and ps gave scanjet with new process numbers every few seconds. I went through a three page uninstall and reinstall process from HP using current driver, COL10841a.dmg. The install process froze with 16 items remaining to install. The freeze repeated. I have wasted a lot of time on this.

In regards to scanning and any use of your MFP:
- Make sure if you are on a network, you are using a ROUTER to connect to your Printer.
- This means directly hooking your printer to the router, aquiring an IP address.
- Properly configuring your HP printer in the network config menu. (printer Menu)
- AS WELL as configuration of the Network address in printer properties.
As well. If you are running windows VISTA you will want to download the appropriate software update for the printer. there IS a update to the toolbox, and to the driver. as well.
you can go to the main page (hp home) bottom left you will see a drop down window, above that drop down there is a link for downloads and software. click on it. in the window that pops up, you want to enter your model number (IE 3390) after your search completes and your printer shows up in a neat little pic with the specs and etc following it. at the bottom there is a link to download the software and or drivers for the unit.
DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE by choosing the appropriate language pack. most will want the all in one-english north americas software.
there is a chance that you might be able to simply delete the program by add remove. but very VERY unlikely. remove the program vi@ hp's un-install software. you may also want to remove the dot4 and any other registry footprints left by the previous install.
then do your re-install with the new downloaded software.
FYI there is a HP security update. as well as some windows updates in the last week. I recommend downloading those files as well.
obviously do the re install before trying the HP update ;)
If all else fails call HP customer support. and one of the techs will gladly assist you.
Just remember they are not HP business owners, the issues you may be having should not be pushed on them, they are more than willing to assist those that are polite, patient, and appreciative.
I added that last bit because i know what it is like to deal with people that think they know it all but have to call someone else to get help and then want to tell that person how to fix something..
Good luck. |

Scan works great for me in Leopard. I did not have to install any software or drivers, as it appears to be built in.
I am using the Web Scan feature.... if you need a scan utility, try Gimp.
Also, HP and others will have drivers updated simply through Mac's Software update automatically. |

Hi Aaron,
I'm not sure I follow your reply.. are you talking about the HP Software (HP Director) and the Scan function working in that? Mine stopped working with the Leperorcy MAC upgrade, and still does not work and I have seen no automatic updates from HP (or even an acknowledgement that someone realizes there is a problem or that anything is being done about it). Generally speaking.. it would be good for HP to at least say.."Yes we know there is a problem"..and what (if anything) they are going to do about it. I have to assume at this point the only reason they they have not acknowledged it is that there is no fix planned .

This is the answer I received from HP only a few hours after filling out a query form I found somewhere on HP's site:

Hello Kilian Gravenhorst.
The HP Director is not working because the files that the Director uses on the Tiger OS are located on a different place on Leopard, so the software is not installing correctly.
Right now our Software Dept. is working to develop the new Director for Leopard, it will be released soon...Please keep checking on the HP web site.

After a couple months of frustration, I actually got my HP Scan to work. This is how I did it: I found the HP Scan application file using Finder and I clicked on "More Information." Once there, I selected " Open using Rosetta" and now it works, both through HP Director and launching directly with Finder.
Good luck and hope this works for others out there like it did for me. |

Fantastic news Andrew,
Rosetta did it on my MacBook Pro too, running Mac OS X 10.5.1. I wish I had thought about this myself:-)
Matthew, the original poster described exactly the same problem with HP Scan as I had, except that I have a Mac with Intel processors. Now, I am sure that he runs an Intel Mac too. It is so sad that HP couldn't supply us with this simple workaround, in almost TWO MONTHS! Obviously they are not aware of this problem at all yet.
That this Rosetta solution works means that the HP Software Dept. (as reported by kilian gravenhorst) was on the wrong track.
First, Director was not part of this problem (I have not relocated any files related to HP, I just selected "Open using Rosetta" in the info window for HP Scan.app)
Second, Leopard was not part of this problem either, because now it works, without any changes.
Conclusion: Since the Motorola PPC code, intepreted by Rosetta, works fine on an Intel Mac, it must be the Native Intel code that has a big problem, which need to be debugged by HP.
I don't know how to forward this important information to HP Software Dept. (I am also a developer of Mac OS X applications and would very much appreciate to get this type of debugging feedback from customers). I can only hope that somebody who reads this knows how to contact them.
Thanks a million!
Roger Andersson
Note: The first time I ran HP Scan under Rosetta it crashed with an exception, but I thought that was probably just a glitch and tried again and now it work fine, even when activated via HP Director. |

Brian, here are the steps I took to find the Rosetta option:
1) Double click on "Macintosh HD" on the Desktop 2) Click on "Applications" 3) Click on "HP LaserJet Software" 4) Click on "Scan" 5) Ctrl-Click on "HP Scan" 6) Click on "Get Info" 7) About 1/3 to 1/2 way down on the window that comes up is a check box item call "Open using Rosetta" 8) Check this item and close the window
My problem was that HP Scan would open, but I would not get a window that allowed me to do anything. This worked for me. I have a LaserJet 2840 and I am using a MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.1. Good luck and I hope this is successful for you. |

Rick, There may be hundreds (or thousands) of different HP printers. I am happy that the drivers for your printer has been updated and made available for download, but that is not an option for many of us. I double-checked and again I couldn't find any new Mac OS X drivers for my HP Color LaserJet CM1017 MFP. They are all more than a year old.
I have spent 5 to 6 hours browsing around HP web pages, to now avail, until I found Mr Andrew Covells tip about Rosetta. Thanks again Andrew.
However, since the HP software is organised differently on my Mac I couldn't follow your 8 step guide. So here is an alternative for those who may be new to the Mac and face the same problem:
1) Locate the "HP Scan" application file/icon (Using Finder or Spotlight) 2) Selected it and hit Command +I (which opens the Get Info window) 3) Check the "Open using Rosetta" box, found below the lable colors in that info window.
I have attached a .pdf file with a picture of the info window. Let's see if that works;-)
Best regards Roger |

For what it is worth, I have the same problem as the rest of you with my Scanjet 4670. I got my first iMac a few days ago so I am still learning Leopard and other software. I spent hours trying to get my scanner to work, assuming that the problem was my unfamiliarity with Leopard and how Macs work, so I am relieved to find this thread. The inability to scan, however, just resulted in a report being filed late for a client, which I don't appreciate. Come on HP! Without new drivers, your customers are losing time and money. |

I am quite sure that nobody from HP is reading what we are discussing here, so if anybody knows how to get their attention, please try. Not for ourselves, because we already have a good workaround, but for all the other poor devils who have useless HP scanners and are trying to get them working with their Intel Macs.
As I said before, I don't believe anymore that this is a Leopard problem, but a Universal Binary one, where the Intel code generated is not working as good as Rosetta is. This also falls back on Apple i think.
BTW, my company decided to never make a UB version of our software. Instead we will go native Intel, using far better compilers.

I'm glad that many people found a good solution... but my original problem was on a dual G5. Thus I cannot enable Rosetta... so the problem is still something deeper with Leopard in my opinion.
I guess I can scan over the network from my Macbook Pro but I really want this to work on my desktop which is right next to the scanner!
So HP, you're not off the hook yet! |

Hi Matthew,
First, thank you for starting this thread.
On a dual G5, right? That is surprising, to me anyway. This means you cannot be affected by any bad Intel code generation.
Well, this is something for the HP engineers to ponder over. I think I have done what I could so far, so hopefully I am out of here.

The solution is so simple. I am puzzled, thought, because checking "Open with Rosetta" on HP Scan.app does not enable me to scan on an HP 3390, and yet I see that this fix is working for someone else on the list who has the same machine. I am accessing the 3390 on a wireless network, and running 10.5.1 on an Intel Mac. |

My wife and I both have MacBook Pro Core Duo's, and both are running Leopard, OS 10.5.1. We have an HP All in One 3390. I have not been able to scan at all since migrating to Leopard. But my wife informed me yesterday (so much for communication in our house) that she can scan just fine, and has had no problem with scanning after going to Leopard.
The difference is that she has an older version of both Director and HP Scan. I was using version 8.1.0 of both apps, whereas my wife is using version 7.0.0 of both. I switched to version 7.0.0, and now I can scan too.
Go figure. |

My version numbers says 1.0 for both Director and HP Scan. See attached picture if you don't believe me. Creation date is: Nov 26 2007, but that is more like the date when I first installed my new HP printer and its software on my TiBook running Tiger. A bit later I migrated all of my TiBook stuff into my new MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 Leopard.
If your HP software is like 8.1.0 or 7.0.0, while I only see 1.0, well then we have to go figuring again. Best Rog |

Likely story Rog.. if that is your real name!
(joking).. No really.. where did the software originate from.. did you just buy a new printer, did it auto update, when and how did you get it and what is your printer?
Thanks! Brian |

Hi All - I have too been having problems with scanning with a PSC 2510 AIO. I was using the version 7.1.1 drivers provided from HP.com. I have found these drivers to be buggy, even on OS X Tiger (10.4). They worked relatively well, but the factory shipped drivers - version 6.3.0 - work much more solidly - even with Leopard. I reinstalled these drivers and they appear to work as intended. Not sure if its because they run under Rosetta or if they aren't as closely tied to Mac OS X, but they seem to work well. If you can find older version 6 drivers on HP's site, grab them and try them. With my install, at least, they installed beside the 7.1.1 drivers and didn't overwrite anything. |

"Open in Rosetta" is only an option for Universal Binaries. If the application is a PowerPC only binary, this option won't appear. You should also be able to ID whether its Universal by pressing Open Apple + I while the icon is selected in Finder. Hope this helps. |

1) Thanks to all the helpful tipps in this thread!
2) But - am I right - there is no solution for scanning to a computer via the network by pressing the "scan to"-button on the 2840 - correct?
It doesn't work here, anyway.

Christian, was that ever an option on a Mac with the 2840? That is one of the features that I miss the most when I transitioned from WinXP to Mac.
Is anyone from HP out there and listening? Aren't things just supposed to work on the Mac? |

I am glad some of you found the Rosetta workaround - but unfortunately it does not solve the problem with the 2840. Really makes me mad because the machine seems to see the device as a scanner - just greys it out as an option. Cmon HP - do something about this!! |

I have also tried the "Rosetta work around" and the Scan function is still grayed out for me on the 2840 too. The 2840 prints but it doesn't scan. Should I try the Universal Binary (I have a MacBook Pro with Intel chip) instead of the "regular" download from HP? |

Vincent, yes, scanning via the network by using the "scan to"-button on the 2840 works perfectly for me using MacOS X 10.4 Tiger. Although I can see and select all my Macs when pressing the "scan to"-button under Leopard, nothing happens when I confirm scanning on the 2840.
I really hope that HP will release a fix in the near future. |

Thanks a million for the ROSETTA tip. It works. Just a little note: you need the 2006 HP software for the All in one 2840 which can be downloaded from the HP site. The original 2005 software that came with the printer does not have the Rosetta option.
I notified HP of this solution and I'll post the response on this forum.

Dear Andrea,
On your G4, even if it was written as a Universal Binary, the driver could not be run in its Intel incarnation. So it has to be run in Motorola PPC code instead. Since you are running a powerMac processor, Rosetta never comes into the equation. Rosetta is just a means of translating PPC code onto an Intel based processor, on-the-fly.
The fact that my, and others, HP drivers work on Intel macs if we use the "Open using Rosetta", indicates that the native Intel side of the code does not work, while Rosettas translation from PPC code to Intel code does.
I find myself in increasing awe of Rosetta (which by the way is not an Apple technology, as they may want you to believe:-)
Our own Software (The BitVice MPEG-2 Encoder) compiled by the Metrowerks compiler for PPC, is running much more efficiently on Intel Macs, using Rosetta, than when we use the Apple development tools for Universal Binaries, which (I thought) was meant to create efficient Intel native code from the same C++ source code.
To me, this means that the outdated ( and no longer supported) Metrowerks compiler must be running in circles around the GCC compiler. That is, to the extent that a fresh recompile, into native Intel code with GCC is so much slower than the Inlel code that Rosetta is capable of producing on-the-fly!!
So, my hat comes off for Rosetta and the old Metrowerks compiler.

Me too. I have been trying all day to get my new HP Scanjet 8270 to run with my ibook and just figured out that it is a problem with Leopard. I never had HP software installed previous to Leopard, so is there any workaround for me? I don't even have a Scan option in Applications.
Even if there is a "workaround", there is no excuse for HP to not have a driver immediately available at the time of Leopard release. Does anyone have any advice on other scanners that work with Leopard? I just purchased this one for over $500 and now I have to return it. I need a good one that scans quickly with good results.
Thanks for any help.

I, too, am having trouble with my HP Scanner, and I also have a dual-core G5 tower. The scan program works sometimes, and other times just quits. The HP copy program usually works. My scanner is a Scanjet 4070.
For the record, the driver for the Laserjet 5MP is also defective for Leopard. It prints fine, but only one copy and only from the paper tray, not from the upper (manual) slot.
Maybe this will mean something to someone: before upgrading to Leopard, I had my scanner plugged into a non-powered USB hub. With Leopard, frequently the HP software couldn't find the scanner, so I put in a powered hub. Now it always finds the scanner, but the Scan app quits before putting up it's main window.
This is the third time HP has failed to keep up with the Mac OS, in my experience. I've discarded scanners twice to stay with the brand. I surely made the upgrade to Leopard too quickly, but HP is both slow and silent about its lack of compatibility, not an endearing combination. |

I have the same problem with my 2840 and have read all your suggestions and tried the "Open with Rosetta" but it did not work for me. I also have OS X 10.5.1 and have a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo. I am not near up to the level that some of you seem to be in understanding all this and I have been trying several things and finally got scan to work using another approach. I think what made the difference is I manually entered an ip on the 2840 and then used the HP Setup Assistant to install the printer. When it asked how I am connected I indicated "Network"(which I am) and then selected "create." I then manually typed in the ip that I put into the printer. Everything seems to be working fine now and I do NOT have the "Open With Rosetta" checked for the Scan application. Maybe someone else can confirm that this works or not on their system also. I do not know if this would work if you are connected by USB. |

THAT WORKED GREAT! Reinstalling the software and after the reboot, enter the IP of the printer and Director will work again.
I wish HP would make this suggestion instead of semi-bricking these printers. I've heard of planned obsolescence before but this takes it to a new high even for HP.
If more manufacturers would quit this non-sense of obsoleting hardware after a major OS upgrade, our landfills would be WAY better off [/soapbox] |

Has anyone gotten the "assign IP directly" fix to work on a PPC machine? I have tried a couple of times to either create a direct IP through the Setup admin, or to add directly through the printer tab in system preferences as a JetDirect socket printer, but neither fixes my original problem of HP Scan starting but not showing the scan window?
Anyway, glad to hear that some are getting their printers working! |

I have the same problem. I have tried *all* the methods which have been suggested in this forum. None has worked up to now. (Configuration: G4 iMac, Leopard 10.5.1, HP-3052 all-in-one)
Still no answer from HP support, despite the promise "a support engineer will be getting back to you, via email, within the next business day to address your issue" - well, that was *several* business days ago. I will write them one last time. I am really getting annoyed.

Hello all, Here is my contribution to the discussion. I also own a HP AiO 2840 and use it together with a MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo with OS 10.5.1. Printing works fine, scanning not.
I tried the various suggestions mentioned above. Ticking the 'Open using Rosetta' option didn't solve the problem.
I think it is a DNS problem. I reinstalled the printer with the 'HP Setup-Assistant' and in the second step I created the printer using its IP-address. The IP-address of the printer can a.o. be found in the printer queue, after clicking the printer utility.
HP Scan now works fine both directly and from the Director (by the way, the 'Open using Rosetta' option is still switch on). Regards, Peter |

I have to add my voice to those who are unhappy with my HP All-in-One after the Leopard upgrade. I have a Laserjet 3030 AiO and while the printing still works, the scanning does not. Because we are not running any Intel macs at this point, the Rosetta solution doesn't work for us.

when I updated to leopard, I had the earlier version of HP Direct installed (7.0.0) and my 3390 AIO continued to work ok. I recently downloaded the newer version of Direct (8.1) and experienced the same problems as others reported (ie Scan didn't work). In addition, though, none of the image buttons on the HP Direct screen worked at all. Also, there was one image button missing ("Fax Log") that had been present on the earlier version. All in all, not a good upgrade (although the 8.1 version does work fine in 10.4, just missing fax log function). |

I'm afraid I've made matters worse. My problem began as others, with the HP Scan function not working after upgrade. I wasn't smart enough to come to this forum first, so I tried a manual uninstall/reinstall of the software, which worked for me in solving a problem last year. Following the manual reinstall, my iMac restarted and the HP Setup Assistant opened to complete the installation. I'm now stuck there, as my HP 2840, which is connected directly to my computer via USB cable, does not show up as a connected printer. Consequently, I cannot even print now. Do any of you know how I can get beyond this step and at least finish the installation, so that I can print? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I'll let one of you experts figure out what just happened. Per above post, after manual uninstall/reinstall of HP Director, I could not finish the installation. I tried one last time and when it hung in the HP Setup Assistant, I disconnected the USB cable and connected the printer up to the network. I selected "menu" and "network setup" and "automatic", which caused the printer to power cycle. Then, when the printer restarted, it appeared in the HP Setup Assistant on my Mac and I could complete the installation. Not only that, but now I can open Director and have full scan function from the network. A year ago, I went to USB connection because I could not scan from the network. Now, I am connected via the network because I cannot scan via USB. I have now assigned the printer an IP address manually and thru several restarts of printer and computer, it's working fine. Go figure. |

Am setting up a new business area in our services practice which started Jan 2/08. Acquired a new iMac with OS 10.5 for a new employee and an HP 2840 for the office in general. Don't need to add to the notes everyone has provided. Am having all the same trouble. Very dissapointing. Not what I expected from HP and Apple.
This is causing grief in my company since trouble shooting reduces time to serve my clients and eats away at profits. I have bypassed the issue for now by installing a PC and mothballing the iMac for the time being. HP Director works fine under XP.
Will try your ideas on the iMac. Thanks for suggesting them.
My question is... When will HP and/or Apple release a new driver/patch to fix the problem on the iMac? This asset is producing zero revenue and costing me technician time.
Thanks.

The workaround for my new iMac hooked up to USB is to setup the printer again via the "hp all-in-one Setup Assistant" which can be found in the Applications > hp laserjet aio (hope this is the generic folder name).
The unfortunate thing here is that this will not work again once the mac is restart. Hope this helps. |

It doesn't seem that anyone has mentioned problems or solutions with my particular model yet: HP psc 1315xi. However, I didn't get to check out the Rosetta option, since I hadn't gotten that far in the thread during my troubleshooting, so if anyone has a problem with the Rosetta option and doesn't know how to work the disc image solution, be sure to use these steps. Regardless of your model, it just might work and the process will waste no more than 10-20 minutes of your time if it fails.
I originally had a Macbook pro running with Tiger, and was pleased with how I could just plug into my system and download the free software from the HP site (since my discs were several hundred miles away... quite intelligent of me). My laptop ended up getting stolen, and my insurance provided me with an "equivalent", however this one came with Leopard, so I wasn't coming from the position of installing Leopard over Tiger, which according to the HP site yields no change in performance. I figured I'd just plug my stuff in and scan away again, since the printer worked fine, but no: scanning did not work. This is unacceptable for an art student. After a few hours work (mostly thanks to a <10 kb/s download of a 98 mb file), I fixed the problem, thanks to this thread, and not to any of HP's "End-of-Dec-07" downloads or upgrades.
Here was my full process in detail, including errors that showed up in the process:
1. I downloaded the cd image of the software directly from HP.
2. I opened the cd image and an install menu came up. I put in my password, and it began to install. At 324 items left, it stopped unexpectedly. I repeated this process several times and restarted, but the highest it ever got was 321 items left.
3. I began reading this thread, found Mark Hufstetler's Nov 2. response and figured I'd just go down the line with solutions. IT WORKED. Here are specific instructions in case it isn't clear up there, since there appeared to be some confusion.
4. I ctrl+clicked on the hp all in one installer icon in the finder window. When the menu popped up, the second item down was "show Package Contents". I selected it.
5. in the "toolbox" window: contents>sub installers>copy
6. double click on the blue icon (NOT FOLDER) that says "copy" next to it. Enter your password. It installs.
7. Select the next folder and install the items there in the exact same way until you have installed every item. This is a surprisingly fast process. Be careful not to miss anything.
8. After this is all installed, close the toolbox and open a new finder window. I don't know where you specifically told your computer to install files, but mine installed automatically into Applications>Hewlett-Packard. Select Hewlett-Packard>device utilities>hp setup assistant.
9. Go through the steps in the hp setup assistant. When you are done, click on HP Scan Pro. It should scan just fine.
I also used "HP all in one device chooser" before setup assistant but I believe this step might be entirely superfluous, as you select your device in HP setup assistant anyway.
I hope someone benefits by reading this process. Good Luck. |

All of my HP utilities are gone from my computer, once I installed Leopard. If I go to applications, there is no HP option for me to select to continue with the Rosetta option. I am attaching the error msg that Im getting on my computer. When I try and reinstall my printer, it gets stuck during the installation process and will not allow me to continue. I can print, but not scan. My printer is the HP Officejet Pro L7780 All in One. There has to be a fix for this! |

I have tried all of the above mentioned efforts to get my scan to work but nothing seems to work for me. Tried the internet sharing, usb, rosetta, everything. I am seeing two problems that I have not seen in the discussion; 1, when I boot up my computer i get a text edit window with HP Communications at the top but the document is blank. When I try using the setup assistant, it says there is a communication error and do I want to reset it? When I click reset, the setup assistant runs but locks up in the final stage. |

I am also getting the HP Communications txt file opening upon login to my system. This occurs no matter which user logs on, so it must be something in the boot path, but I cannot find it. Only occurs on my G5 not my MacBook Pro. Anybody know where to look to kill this startup item?

Try this.
- Open a Finder window. - Type 'hp' in Search box top right. (no quotes) - Click on 'Library' in Search sub-menu near top of window so you're searching only in Library. - Also click on 'File Name' rather than 'Contents' - Delete anything you find that's related to the hp printer including 'com.hp.laserjet.scan.plist' and other hp plist preferences.
I was able to get it to work on Intel iMac by (1) Setting printer to Static IP (2) using Rosetta for HP Scan in /Applications/'HP LaserJet Software'/Scan (3) Creating and Selecting Static IP in Director Setup (if you don't select it with with Create button in Setup, it uses Bonjour Printer)
You may need to do a complete Uninstall using hp uninstallers in HP Applications and also delete all related preferences and configurations. Then Reinstall. Try to change to Rosetta before you run the setup wizard and you won't have to delete preferences twice.
Hope that helps.

I'm pleased to report that my Scanjet 4070 is now fully supported and working correctly with the recent release of its software for Leopard.
Support for my old Laserjet 5MP has not been forthcoming, and HP has not answered my inquiry about prospects. Although I can print to this machine, the driver does not understand either multiple copies or using other than the default paper tray.
My machine is a dual core G5 PowerMac. |

Hi everybody,
I'm down: Printing = ok, no scanning, no faxing. I have the same problem as the others.
Dear HP: Your PPT (description for 10.5 support) is nice but futile - sorry for that.
I think it is the first step for "satisfied customers" to show the roadmap for new drivers and the second step to "keep the timeline".
Are there some beta-drivers for downloading?

For some reason on the ppc mac, I can now scan in acrobat and ps cs3. When I hit the scan and then hit finish it brings the scanned image into the app as it should. On the intel mac, in acrobat, the scan window opens up, I can scan the image, but when I hit finish, nothing happens. The scanned image does not import itself into acrobat. I tried PS cs3 and when I hit finish in the scan app, the scanned image does import itself into PS cs3.
I am unsure as to what the problem is now with scanning into acrobat. |

I've had the same problem as others and the rosetta work around solved the issue (albeit a hack) today. I'm using 3052 AiO and Intel Macs running 10.5.2. It took me three months of support chats, emails, and even an HP support rep visiting my house (I'm an American living in India) but it wasn't until I read this helpful thread that I have some success. Thank you all for the support.
I'm shocked that HP has done nothing to communicate this issue to customers. Why isn't there a mention of it on the support pages? A simple link to this thread would have saved me hours and hours of wasted time. I'm really not impressed with HP's handing of this issue. |

Basic set up is 1 Intel Mac, 1 G5 PPC, 1 x G4 PPC and a network Laserjet 3055 on Director HP 8.1, via a generic router. Leopard upgrade in late Jan 08 and now 10.5.2.
I tried the Rosseta option, but it would not work on the Intel at all, which puzzled me considering the earlier posts. However Lance's IP solution is great and the Intel machine now works like a treat (the Rosetta box is still ticked). Still no solution for the PPC's thought, but at least I can turn off the PC again.
So thanks to all who have taken the trouble to post their ideas.
No advice from HP, apart from await the update.

I couldn't scan with my Scanjet 4670 for most of four months, and I tried every solution mentioned here, but to no avail. Suddenly, as of this morning, my scanner is working perfectly. All I know is before my 30 days is up with Best Buy, I am going to return my 2840 because it is simply a colour printer with my mac. The only way I can scan multiple pages and create a pdf document is to import each page into photoshop and save the pages as pdf's. After that I have to open them all in acrobat and create my booklet.
Page import into acrobat is a no go whether it's an intel mac or not.
Yes I like HP printers, but I might as well go purchase another colour laser all in one from a company that listens to their customers. |

Hi Hudson & David,
If you are referring to my post then unless you can connect your printer to your hub I do not think the IP address solution works.
However have you tried the Rosseta fix, but locating HP Scan in your Application, click on more info (drop down box in the finder window) and about half way down in one of the expandable boxes just click on the Rosseta option and close. (A better explanation of this was posted in December). If you have tried this apologies for the reply.
If this works it may be IP works for networks and Rosseta for USB connections so a confirming post would be useful. |

Tried the Rosetta solution but there is no sign of it in the more info. Think I read somewhere before that only applies to Intel jobbies - not to PPC. Right??

Hi, Been having the same problem with my LJ 3015. OS 10.5 with a dual G4. Did some experimenting and found that reinstalling the original drivers and AIO software permits me to scan for a shot time.
Seems the problem lies in the "HP Communicator" application. Any upgrade to the new drivers creates a conflict with that app and causes the HP Scan app to either fail to communicate with the printer/scanner or creates the problem where HP Scan launches and then hangs without bringing the application window up.
Never have been able to use the scan/fax feature through the network with an HP print server attached to the printer. |

Here's how I got the 3390 to work over the network using Mac OS 10.5.2:
1. Uninstall all the printers & faxes associated with the 3390 in the System Preferences: Printers panel. 2. Download the latest driver for 10.4 from HP -- it weighs in at about 125 MB. 3. Install the drivers, and let it restart your computer (actually, I had to restart it myself, but whatever:) 4. While the computer is rebooting, wander over to the HP 3390 and use the arrow & ok buttons to print out Reports: Network. You'll find the printer's IP address on the piece of paper it spits out :) 5. On restart, the HP Assistant will appear and help you choose your printer. At this point I ran the Hp LJ 3052-3055 patch 8.1.2.
Down load it from here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=1140784&swItem=ma-54565-1&prodNameId=1140779&swEnvOID=219&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=3
Make sure your LJ is not connected to the cpu when you run this patch.
Rather than picking your printer from the list, click the "create" button to type in the 3390's IP address (that you found on the report). 6. Do a spotlight search for HP Scan and get info on the HP Scan app (you can just type command-I while it's highlighted in the spotlight menu). Check the box that says "Open using Rosetta". (Otherwise it doesn't seem to launch properly). 7. Bada bing! Scanning should now work in HP's Scan software. For me, at least, the create button + Rosetta+ the patch was the magic bullets, your mileage may be different. . |

Like so many others in this thread, I have an HP 3052 AIO device whose scanning functionality has been DOA since I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.2. After waiting for months for HP to fulfill its promises to release updated drivers for Leopard, I contacted them. Their response was that updated drivers "could" be released "any day now" and that I should keep checking back with HP. Well, no surprise -- no updated drivers. If you want my honest opinion, I think that HP has no intention of releasing updated drivers for the affected printers (after all, it's ONLY been 4-1/2 months since Leopard was released) and that those of us with these products are just unlucky. It's clear that HP does not consider it important to support the Mac user community with timely updates of their software. |

I can't quite believe that the HP Moderator is telling us we can't use this forum to complain about HP lack of service? Am I right in interpreting it this way?
For anyone at HP who's listening: I used to be a loyal HP buyer. The last time I bought a printer that wasn't HP was probably in the 1980s. The main reason: service. Once when I had my portable printer with me on vacation and simply FORGOT the cable, HP overnighted me one for free! You can't beat that. Of course, a company probably can't keep up that kind of thing.
But the current state of things is at the opposite extreme. Horrible. I've now had a $900 paperweight for several months. I don't understand why HP can't get it together to make a compatible driver, unless they simply want us to buy new equipment. The thing is, if I buy something new, it will obviously not be HP equipment! |

Bram,
Welcome to the Mac! I switched over a year ago, and I've never looked back -- the Mac is the best-kept secret in computing.
It's regrettable that HP has not stepped up to the plate and supported their products for Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). I don't know what we can do about this -- it's not the fault of Apple or the Mac -- this is clearly in HP's court, and until and unless they release drivers, those of us using these HP AiO printers on Leopard are just out of luck.
With respect to installing software on the Mac: Yes, in many cases, installing a product is as simple as dragging or copying it to your Applications folder. How cool is that? However, this is not always nor necessarily the case. In almost all cases, software applications are distributed in the form of a disk image (.dmg) file. You begin by opening this file, which causes it to be "mounted" exactly as if it were a real disk. It will then show up in the Finder and you can click on it to display its contents (folders and files).
Basically, installation can take 3 major forms: 1) Copy a single application file (.app) to your Applications folder, 2) If the product is in the form of a package (.pkg or .mpkg) open the package and follow the instructions, or 3) the vendor provides an installer app that guides you through the installation. In the case of the HP AiO printer software and drivers, they provide an installer app that you run (open) and it guides your through the setup process.
When you're finished with installation and no longer need the .dmg file, you 1) Eject it, causing it to be "unmounted", and then you can 2) Move it to the Trash. |

Yes, I have enjoyed the move to Apple; I use Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc, so with windows the system would freeze often;
With the mac, no freeze in over 6 months;
Luckily, unlike others the printing side of my HP 4280 has worked flawlessly; I guess the drivers included were fine;
I noticed a new hp software package dated January 2008, after leopard;
I may try to install it and see what happens;
will get back to you with info; |

OK, normally, I wouldn't post this, but "desperate people do desperate things", right? ;-)
As a last-ditch effort to get my HP 3052 scanner functionality to work, I decided to try re-installing my original HP 3052 AiO software on Leopard. I believed this to offer little hope for success, of course, and possibly even carry some risk.
So, with fingers crossed, I inserted the HP disk and initiated the installation process.
Well, everything went without any apparent hitch, until I restarted the system to complete the installation (at the installer's insistence) and the final step of setting up the printer's configuration failed with an exception. I repeated it several times (manually starting the HP Setup Assistant in the Applications/HP Laserjet Software folder), and each time it died. So I was never able to complete the installation process "normally". That's the bad news.
Now the good news: Printer functionality was unaffected, and continued to work. The HP Director application appears to have installed and placed its icon in the dock. Even better, scanning functionality (invoked from Director) actually WORKS! I've been using it for about a week, now, with no apparent ill effects, and I now have both printer AND scanner functionality. My scanner is no longer an expensive paperweight. ;-)
Now, I am NOT recommending this procedure and to be sure, YMMV. However, if like me, you're desperate to get your scanner back under Leopard, AND you have both the ability and the inclination to venture into uncharted waters, you may wish to give this a try.
One can always hope, of course, that HP will in fact release updated Leopard drivers for their printers in the future.
Again -- I am NOT recommending that you do this as a workaround. I'm only reporting my own experience, which only seemed fair since we're all in the same, sinking boat, here, and as the HP moderator points out, this is a community help forum. |

Hi all,
thanks to this forum I was able to get my PSC 2175 all-in-one scanning on OS X 10.5.2 MacBookPro
Howto:
Download driver (2170_790_EN.dmg 101.28M): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-42188-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=90809&os=219&lang=en
Open the .dmg file so it mounts. Right-click the installer "hp all-in-one installer" and select "Show Package Contents"
Navigate to Contents>Sub Installers and install all the packages in the folders "Setup", "IO" and "Scan". (some might not be necessary...)
In "Applications" navigate to the "Hewlett-Packard" folder. Make sure "HP Scan Pro" and all the programs in the subfolder "Device Utilities" are Rosetta enabled, see previous posts. (CMD-i, check-box near the bottom of the "General" section).
Unplug (assume you are using USB) and re-plug in your printer.
Start "Hp Setup Assistant" located in Applications>Hewlett-Packard>Device Utilities folder. The assistant should find your all-in-one printer. Be patient, it might take a couple of seconds. If not try unplugging and plugging in your USB connection again. After you enter your personal Fax details (phone number etc) the assistant finishes.
Start "Hp Scan Pro" located in Applications>Hewlett-Packard folder. You should be able to scan now.
Hope this helps some PSC 2175 users and maybe other.
Cheers!

Tried the new software. HP Scan does work but scanning into Acrobat Pro does not work. Same issues as before where after scanning is complete and you hit finish in HP Scan, the scanned images do not get imported into Acrobat. |

I also have a Laserjet 3030 that's been a boat anchor for more than six months. This is especially maddening considering that brochure I received from HP saying that my printer was "Leopard ready."
I guess Leopard ready doesn't actually mean that it works with Leopard, only that the printer is perfectly ready to not work with Leopard.
Unfortunately, we're all on PPC macs, so the Rosetta option doesn't work for us. |

There are new drivers for the laserjet 3050. I use a laserjet 3015. Because it was until today only usable as a printer with Leopard I did download the laserjet 3050 driver version 8.2, did install it and received a full functional All-In-One Laserjet again. Printing, scan and fax do work. Maybe that driver works with the 3020 and 3030 laserjets too. I did not delete the old driver version 8.1.. Just installed the new driver too. |

I installed the (just released) software bundle. I have OSX 10.5.2 on an Intel iMac and a LaserJet 2840 on the local ethernet.
I was able to scan (finally). But then I wasn't able to PRINT (annoying) -- a print job would enter the queue, sit there for a few seconds, and then list as "stopped" under status.
Couldn't get printing to work until I changed the printer driver to "generic postscript." I'm sure this will become a problem at some point, but I'm done messing with it for a while. |

OK, so I installed the update and I can now scan through the network. But I can no longer print -- even with USB!
When I try to remove and re-add the printer it tells me that I'm missing some of the software. I reinstalled the "HP Color LaserJet 2840 Printer Firmware Update Utility" from May 200 and it still doesn't work.
Any suggestions? |

Just downloaded the new drivers for my Laserjet 3055 on both Intel and PPC. I did not delete previous versions before install. The printing and scanning works fine over the network, but I have yet to test faxing which was not working prior to the install.
Typical that I tried to leave feedback when downloading the drivers, such as "Don't let marketing get ahead of the technical department again" and the system crashed and did not record my comment. So if you are still watching HP, I think we would all welcome your acknowledgment of your error (via this post) and a promise that it won't happen again. Rebuild some trust with us poor old customer, who happen to pay your wages! |

I was as surprised as anyone to see that HP had actually released updated drivers for the 3052. Perhaps all the complaining we've been doing in this forum motivated HP to action. ;-) I installed it this afternoon, without incident, and it appears to work fine -- printer still works ;-) AND scanning functionality works, too. Woohoo!
I hate to sound like an ingrate ;-) but on to the next problem: I also have an OfficeJet 7210 printer/scanner/copier/fax attached to an IMac, which I'd like to upgrade to Leopard. I'm still running Tiger (10.4.11) there because upgrading to Leopard will lose the scanner functionality, and to my knowledge, HP has not released updated drivers for this model. Since it's even older than my 3052, I have even less hope that updated drivers will ever be released for it. Sigh. I also use this printer for photo printing, so I'm even more concerned about doing anything that might cripple its functionality in any way.
Which leaves me with (practically speaking) only two choices: 1) Forego an upgrade to Leopard, so that I can continue to use this printer with Tiger, or 2) Upgrade to Leopard and buy a new printer that is supported on Leopard (and retire the 7210).
Obviously, I'm not going to remain on Tiger indefinitely and forego upgrading to Leopard. HP clearly demonstrated a lack of commitment to supporting the Mac (yes, they're releasing updated drivers for a few models, but 5 MONTHS after Leopard debuted). |

Installed on my dual G5 and...
I can scan! Of course, now I can't print. Get the same error reported above, printer shows stopped job and can't move forward. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Still no joy.
HP, I've been with you a long time. Two HP computers and probably 10 printers to include a DesignJet, but this is about it. Is it really that hard to fix this mess... |

2800 Series possible work around for printing.. Once again i am network installed on a dual G5
I have been playing with it and found a way to print. Under the "Print and Fax" icon in system preferences, highlight the printer and go then select "options and supplies" Under that window, select the "Driver" Tab and change the driver to "Generic PostScript Printer"
HP seems to not have included a new 2800 series driver, and breaks the old driver in the install process. This will at least allow you to print and still use the regular scan processes through the director. Less than a perfect solution, but a reasonable work around.
HP, you still owe us an explanation on the 2800 series print driver... |

Here is how I got things to work on my 3030 this morning...
I am not finding the "New" software that others have spoken of in the past few days. But I installed the same old software package from 7/15/06 located here...
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=378058&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=378056&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219
Then I followed the advice of others in this post and did a "Get Info" on the Scan Application and changed it to open in Rosetta and I finally have my scanning back! But as many people have stated I lost my printing ability.
I then went back and downloaded the new 01/28/08 driver from the same location and installed the driver, then went to System Preferences > Printers and Faxes and Deleted the HP 3030 Printer. I then rebooted.
The HP Set-up Assistant started up and I simply quit out of that (I will have to delete the HP folders out of the "Startup Items" Folder inside the main "Library Folder to take care of that..) and the System had recognized and installed the HP 3030 on it's own. It now prints fine and I can still scan as well. |

The latest drivers solved a lot of my problems with my 3055 and Leopard 10.5.2 but like someone above there ain't no way to get HP Scan to work with Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.2. Sigh...
Could be an Adobe problem though but I've about had it. HP took some 5 months to release a compatible driver that still doesn't solve a lot of problems, reading the entries above. What's more, I signed up for an email notification should the driver appear and never received a mail. Nice customer support. Neither did I receive much response to email queries about the driver release date.
I'm in the market for a large format professional photo printer. |

While the scan function is working for me after the new drivers (Laserjet 3390), this functionality only extends as far as the HP Scan utility itself. The TWAIN support seems completely busted and the little bit of support through Image Capture that used to exist (prior to Leopard) is now completely non-functional (for remote devices).
Still frustrated... |

Ok, I think I can add my stone there, I'm using a All-i-one Laserjet 3030, USB connected to a Mac Mini Intel.
First thank you, Andy, for the "Rosetta" tricks. It works fine for me.
Second, at the end of this forum I saw HP update software for 3052. I have tried it, Director and HP Scan 8.2, not working for my 3030, probably because the driver was overwritten, BUT, I have re-installed the 2006, july, 8.1 versions and now, the thing works.
I'm using 8.2 versions wihout Rosetta. we'll see what issues I find in futur but for now, it's ok.
By the way, for AIO 3030, on 13th of April 2008, not yet a dedicated update :-( |

April 17 and I'm having the same problem. I have a PowerBook 4GB 667 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.5.2, HP LJ 3330 MFP connected via USB. When I look for a Rosetta option there ISN'T one in the More Info area.
If it's any consolation, I have NEVER been able to get scanning to work with my expensive Epson AcuLaser CX11NF color laser, which they quit making after about a year. Their tech support could never resolve it. I also can't print envelopes with that big ol' puppy. It's basically a fax machine that prints very expensive color.
I basically am powering up my old laptop running Tiger to do all my scanning, then emailing myself the files. How's that for a sophisticated workaround? Maybe that's Apple's plan--2 laptops are better than one. |

Okay, for 4 days I have tried to use my scanner on my HP psc 1315xi. I could copy and print but not scan and only found out since I bought a new G5 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS 10.5.2. Long story short, after trying many fixes that did not work I used the DVD that came with the computer and reinstalled the driver as I could not download from HP, no link. That did not help. I kept reading and finally found a suggestion to do what I had done and then download the software Software for HP PSC 1310 Series - Mac OS X v10.2.8. I did this and installed and it works. The only thing that does not work is the scan button on the front/top panel of the printer. I can live with that. I just hope HP will let us know when they make a change for the better. Hope this helps someone. |

SueLynn and Susanna:
Macs ARE easier to use! ;-)
I know it's little consolation, but I believe the real culprit here is HP. Leopard has been out for nearly 7 months, now, and HP simply dropped the ball on providing updated driver support for this new version of the OS, particularly for their multi-function devices. Print functionality works out of the box, because it's built into the OS. Alas, scanner (and fax) functionality are another story, and we are wholly dependent upon the hardware manufacturers (HP, in this case) for that.
Unfortunately, I think that the hardware manufacturers have drunk the Microsoft Koolaid, and their attitude seems to be that when you upgrade to a new version of the OS, you go out and buy new hardware (planned obsolescence). |

This post probably won't survive moderation, but... ;-)
For 8 months now, ever since Leopard (10.5.x) was released in October, 2007, I have not been able to upgrade an iMac to the new (current) release of the OS for the simple reason that I have an HP Officejet 7210 AIO, and HP has never released updated drivers for it. It's now abundantly clear that they never will. In effect, they have abandoned this device and supporting it (and their customers) under Leopard.
Ultimately, I was faced with choosing between the printer and upgrading the OS: do I stay on Tiger and keep the printer, or do I replace the printer so I can upgrade to Leopard? I finally decided that I had no choice but to scrap a perfectly good printer (the HP) and buy a new one that IS supported under Leopard. |

I have to then uninstall the drivers and install them again. Scan would then work for a while and stop again. I have to uninstall and install again.
Strange and a pain, but at least I can scan now. |

Hi BluesBrother1,
Where is your problem? Please install 9.7 software and use your HP Officejet 7210 also in Leopard.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-56798-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=391153&os=219&lang=en
If your system is not clean from HP AiO software you should uninstall this older version of software, then restart your mac. Best would be to repair disk permissions before installinmg the 9.7 software. If you will se concrete problems please come back with details. -The problems will be solvable.
Generally for HP All-in-Ones the version 9.7 or 9.7.1/9.7.2 will support MacOS 10.5 Leopard. With Regards. Fred |

HP Scan in Leopard
I have been reading this thread with interest hoping that I could find a scanning solution for my HP Laserjet 3320 all-in-one machine. I have downloaded the latest drivers only to discover that they are print only. The HP Director cannot locate the MacBook.

Yes, I think that we can safely conclude that those of us that have HP devices for which updated (working) support for Leopard 10.5 has NOT been released are pretty well screwed at this point. After all, it's been over a YEAR, now, since Leopard was released by Apple. Obviously, HP has simply chosen to abandon these devices and their customers, leaving them with expensive paperweights sitting on their desktops. Naturally, their recommendation at this point is to "junk your printer and buy another one from us". I think that the moral of the story should be abundantly clear, here. I know that it is for me. |

Hi Michel, I do not think you have to use Rosetta for installation. The software seems to be a current version and should run native in MaCOS 10.5. As MaCOS 10.5.6 is out now you should install this update, after restarts repair disk permissions and install this software (if you will get your MFP back). ;-) Cheers Fred |

Thanks Fred
I just updated MacOS to version 10.5.6.
When I receive the printer back from HP, i will install the software 1.3.3 (1 Jun 2008)
I won't use Rosetta and i hope i don't have to update the firmware. Last time i did it, i corrupted it. I've no idea why.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Michel, If the printer will come back from HP Lab or repair floor the firmware should be up-to-date. I will keep my fingers crossed. ;-) |

Hello Fred
I received my printer/scan back from HP. I needed the help from the hotline to install the software for macos. I've had to create a new dossier called "hpio" and then drag the original files created during the first part of the installation from the original HP Dossier to the new cerated one (hpio). Then, using the setup from this hpio dossier, i've installed the software (HP Director, HP scan ... ).
I still have a problem: the bottons of the HP Director tool become inactive 2-5 seconds after having clicked on this tool. so that i cannot scan. This problems arrives after having used my mac for some time. Short after booting, everything is OK.
Thanks for further ideas ans sorry for my poor english.

I got a scan from a LJ 3020 8.1.0 under Leopard 10.5.6 by logging in as root. However, it often stopped part way down the page. |

Dear Michel,
I have the same problem: I'm not able to scan with the CM1015 because of deactivation of the programs "hp-director" or if already chosen "scan". For me it is to complicate each time to boot my iMac so I have put the "HP Setup Assistant" in the dock and deinstall and then install my CM 1015 every time I want to use the scanner. Never the best but a better way... Please give me a note if there will be a final solution...
Thanks from Switzerland |

I've no problem anymore. It's important starting the printer before starting the mac. In my case it's OK now.
Have a good week-end

HP Scanjet 3970. Brand new iMac 10.5.6. Scanner software and documentation says this device is Leopard supported. The scanner is not seen by HP Device Manager or Image Capture. The scanner is quite visible on the USB bus through the system profiler - plugged directly into back of iMac. Reinstalled software - no luck. Any thoughts? Buy a new scanner that can be proven to work and add more "rubble" to the landfill? |

Well, it would seem that a more precise and attentive brain would be in order. I reran the installer and noted it defaults to Scanjet 3600 when starting the install. Changed to the only other option - 3970. Works fine. Never mind. |

I started a new thread, but it seems this problem is being addressed here.
I have a brand new CM3530 MFP. Mac osX 10.5.6 USB connection. there seems to be absolutely no scanner support for this product! no scanning software came on the disk, or downloads from the HP site! No HP setup utility, no hp director, nothing. Great printer, but what about the scanner, how do I get it working???????? |

I found a workaround...
Traverse to /Applications/Hewlett-Packard
find EVERY binary file in that directory and below. chown it to root and chmod it to 4775.
This allowed ALL of my stuff to start working on the 3970 scanner.
Seems that it ran find logged in as Admin, but not a regular user.
YMMV... |

I wonder what happens when MacosX goes updated from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7. And later to Snow.
I really don't understant why HP doesn't really take care of Mac users. OK, I solved my problem, but I lost weeks and weeks.
The "download section" of the HP Internet site is really poor. Evereybodoy should find all the required softwares. For example: driver and full software for Color Laser Jet 1312 for people using Macos 10.5.7 (in a couple od days. I suppose the compatibility will have been tested. Otherwise, it will be time to get printers that are REALLY macos compatible.
Thanks |

Does anyone know how to get a 2840 to print PDF's faster? I'm on a MAC with Leopard and latest patches. PDF's print painfully slow.
Thanks for the help. |

Simple, free solution for scanning with HP 2410xi on a MAC running Leopard may also work for hp psc 1300 series, psc 2400 photosmart series, and hp officejet 5500 series.
Solution: insert the CD with install software (hp CD version 6.2.0 copyright 2003) and install in the normal way.
I am running MAC OS 10.5.8 on an IMAC and I have an hp 2410xi connected to the IMAC using a USB port. On a whim, I took the original install CD that came with the printer and installed the software. To my amazement, everything seemed to install without a hitch. I can scan and print just as before in Tiger 10.4.
The install CD says on its label that it is intended for:
hp psc 1300 series psc 2400 photosmart series hp officejet 5500 series for Macintosh OS v9.1 and higher OSX v10.1.5 and higher
Hope this works for you. Please feel free to link this solution to any other forum where it would be useful. |

For Snow Leopard there is no scanning software yet, just printing drivers that come with the OS itself. |

Hi all!
I think this is not the right Tread for MacSO 10.6 Snow Leopard. The thread is near two years old and related to Mac OS 10.5.
Anyway here is the Apple document with list of supported Printer and Scanner software:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP
And here is the instruction how to install and how to use it:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3771
Hoping it will help you.
If anyone will have proiblems with a specific HP device he should open a new (good named) Tread to get specific assistance.
With regards Fred |

There is a macos integrated scan function with SNOW (which does not function with most of laser HP printers) and also a "printdriver" for the HP laserjet 1312.
Therefore: It is possible to print but not to scan.
The old HP software (HP Director) has not been updated.
Do I have to change my scanner/printer ?
I already, as many people, have had a lot of problems to scan and print with HP under Leopard. Now, it is worse. Maybe the solution comes from Apple, and (of course ???) not from HP.

Sigh. Here we go again: Snow Leopard.
I think, based on my own experience and the extensive experience of the users in this thread, that support for HP printers, particularly scanning, is a lost cause with Macs. Let's look at the history: HP was VERY LATE getting usable drivers out for Leopard; in many cases, users were left with non-functional or partially-functional (print-only) devices.
I think it is safe to conclude that there will be NO SUPPORT, beyond basic print functionality, offered for Snow Leopard, and that will probably be on the basis of whatever built-in drivers ship with Snow Leopard.
Once again, this is a cautionary tale, for which the moral should be abundantly clear. |

Maybe i do not understand quite well.
But, if there is no hope, i think it's time to advise me to buy another multifunction printer. I'd like a color laser printer that can also scan (fax is not impotant for me). Of course "Snow" compatible.
P.S for personal use ( an equivalent to the HP Color Laserjet CM 1312 MFP )
Thanks

Michel, I think you're getting the message! I still have an HP 3052 MFP, and was finally able to get it to work (print + scan) under Leopard. However, I'll have to think long and hard before biting the bullet and moving to Snow Leopard with this printer, since it's entirely likely that I will (once again) lose the device's scanning capability.
I also have an iMac, with which I was using a different HP MFP. I put off upgrading from Tiger to Leopard for over six months, thinking/hoping that HP would finally come up with full-function drivers. They didn't. So, after doing a lot of research, I settled on a Canon MFP which had Leopard support.
The point of which is, considering HP's abysmal track record for supporting their existing products for evolving releases of OS X (Leopard, Snow Leopard?), I think that one would be well-advised to do their homework and seriously consider buying a different brand (not HP) that had the necessary support.
My advice would be that you "look before you leap" with respect to using HP products with Macs. JMO, of course. As to which brand/model to consider, I can't advise you, there. I can only recommend that you do some research and consider the experience of others before making a purchase. |
