My wife's computer is a Compaq Presario C700
Compaq Presario c700
s/n CND8161D52
p/n KN986UA#ABA
service tag: C769US

She has had nothing but trouble with Vista so, I downloaded it to XP as many people have. Too late, I learned about all the problems people have had with this. I have XP running but none of the drivers I have installed other than the touchpad driver works. Can someone tell me what drivers I need to make this work.

I would appreciate any help.

P.S. I ordered the recovery disks as a last resort. I still hope to make XP work.

Install from a list or specific location,

Select Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install,

For the Hardware Type select 'Show All Devices'

Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk".

Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf".

Ignore XP when it complains.

Reboot.

Most of the drivers released now are for XP SP2.
If you don't have it get the full SP2 from MS and install it before drivers.

Cheryl,

You are a saint, for sure. You have taught an old college professor a few tricks.

I do have XP service pack 3 installed and all the updates.

Thanks to you, I have everything working except for the wireless. Based on other threads, my choices are:

http://tinyurl.com/24nau2 which didn't work

I'll try these others tonight:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36501-37000/sp36684.exe

Thanks again.

Cheryl,

Good News on the wireless card for my C769US. The wireless driver that finally worked for my XP downgrade (or is that an upgrade) is:

http://www.atheros.cz/download.php?atheros=AR5006EG&system=1

I saw another post you made on another thread for a Vista upgrade and tried the XP driver and it worked.

I don't care if the light doesn't turn blue. Atleast it works.

Great to hear you have all working. If you want to work on that wireless light>>>

Atheros amber light fix:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=160430015&blogID=359788250

Go to start-Run, type regedit, press enter.
open the "Folder" called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
inside that you'll find SYSTEM, open that.
Then open CurrentControlSet.
Then open Control
Then open Class

Inside there you will see a bunch of "folders" with names like {4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}

You need to go down through them looking at what appears on the right under the key "default" when you open each one, until you
find "Network Adapters"
Open that folder, then go down the list fo numbered "folders" until you find the one that has the name of your Atheros driver under "DriverDesc" This is where you need to add those keys.
Follow the directions until you find your Wireless Network Adapter listed next to DriverDesc. In that same directory, i.e., 0003, add these Dword values:

New->Dword
Value Name=gpioFunc0ActHi and Value Data=0
Click Ok.
New->Dword
Value Name=gpioPinFunc0 and Value Data=3
You are done. These values should be seen in the same window as DriverDesc and the name of your Wireless Network Adapter. For this to work with the LED you must disable your wireless through your network settings and then re-enable.

Cheryl,

Now, Ive got the blues, Blue Lights that is. Thanks for all your wonderful help.

You are a blessing for all of us that prefer XP to Vista on an HP (Compaq) Laptop.

I'll talk to the pope about that sainthood thing.

Could someone use this list of drivers to downgrade to XP c792ev too? It's a presario C700 but with a different service tag.

One thing is happening is when i click on the "Smart audio" or "Audio devices" in control panel windows suddenly blanks out and computer restarts. Other than that all is working out good. I tried reinstalling the sound driver but no luck
I have a C770 model.

Hello. I hope this will help though it applies to C771TU model. I would like to add this link for Atheros Wireless LAN driver as nothing else worked for me.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-62508-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

P.S: The page says the drivers are for Vista but they worked for me for XP. YMMV.
