I have installed the 64-bit Vista solution center for a Scanjet 4850. It worked when i got the HP notebook in April.

About two weeks ago I went to use the Solution Center and I got a message that it couldn't find solutioncenter.msi in my Local Temp directory. I reinstalled the full install package that I had downloaded from the HP site, and it worked.

Today I got the same message. I went to reinstall the install package, and it wanted to uninstall first. I said OK. It does not uninstall. I have tried both the install package uninstall and the control center uninstall. I am at a point where the install package will neither install itself or uninstall the software so I can reinstall.

When I start the Solution Center, I am still getting the message it is looking for the solutioncenter.msi file. I am looking to see if I can find it so I can feed it to this monster and get on with things.

I am very disappointed at the fact that HP allows this to happen as it looks like there are scores of other products that have the same problem. If this solutioncenter.msi file is so important, they should post it on their website.

Anyone have any ideas as to where I can find the .msi file, or what I can do the either install or unstall this beast. I'm stuck- can't move forward, can't move back.

Thanks in advance

I have exactly the same problem with my installation on XP Pro standalone computer with SP3 and all updates installed. When I click on the desktop icon I get a pop up message that the solutioncenter.msi cannot be found. I have just closed a chatline case concerning installation problems for my Scanjet G4050, so am going to attempt to re-open it concerning this message.

I have the same problem. It is very annoying and I would like to get rid of the message. I will contact the solution center when I have a problem but not everytime I start my computer.

I had the same annoying problem with the so-called "solutioncenter.msi". (I have Windows Vista & an HP Deskjet D1455.) ***How I fixed the situation: Go to CONTROL PANEL, then ADMIN TOOLS, then SYSTEM CONFIG. Click on the "Start Up" tab and unmark whatever lines have "HP" next to it (I had two). Save the changes. Restart & cross your fingers! Good luck - hope this helps.

I appreciate the answer. I was able to stop the annoying message from coming up when I start my computer, but it has rendered the Solution Center program useless. When I start it manually I get the annoying message that it cannot find solutioncenter.msi and then it doesn't load all of the program components leaving my program screen with empty boxes. (There should be buttons like "Scan Document", "Scan Picture" where the empty boxes are.) Hence the buttons don't function and I can't use the scanner.

This was the point where I tried to either uninstall or reinstall to get the ENTIRE program to load and I'm stuck in Vista. Can't go forward, can't go back.

So part of a program sits on my system and I just deleted the icons to run it. If I need to scan anything, I go back to my XP system where it was initially installed and still works.

I had this same problem in addition to other error messsages and to the fact that my scanner would only scan slides now. It would not scan either documents or pictures. I got someone who works on computers to look at my computer, it took him quite a while. What finally seemed to work was he logged temporarily as an administrator on the computer, removed the drives and all the programs for the scanner, reloaded the new drivers and program from the hp website. After this it still was not working quite right. He then replaced the cord from the computer to the scanner with the another cord. I don't know if it was the combination of reloading the drivers/programs as admnistrator and replacing the cord. But it works great now. I am not a computer professional so I don't understand how to set up an adminstrator temporary account but hope this works for you as I know I didn't want to got out and get another scanner as this has been a great scanner.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. 64 bit Vista, HP Pavilion Slimline s3500z PC, HP OfficeJet J6400. I went "ALL HP" so I wouldn't have these issues - guess it wasn't just a "Dell thing". Hopefully someone can post a solution as this is a real annoyance.

I get this message on rare occassions, mostly after I resume the computer from a sleep state. I don't recall it happening after a cold boot.

I simply cancel the dialog as many times as necessary (sometimes as many as five) and everything about my HP OfficeJet J6480 seems to work fine.

It's annoying, but it eventually stops and the device functions just fine.

I'm using 32-bit Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 on a Dell D830 laptop.

I have a similar issue. Running Windows Server 2008 x64 as my workstation.

Scanner had been working fine for about 8 months (except for the lid buttons), then I started getting the solutioncenter.msi message every time I would launch the Solution Center application.

I decided I would uninstall/reinstall to see if it would clear it up.

Now, I cannot use the solution center application at all. Any time I try to "scan" anything, I get a messgage saying:

"An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again."

I've tried every trick I can think of and nothing has helped.

Update, I found out I can scan with Adobe Acrobat. I'll see if there are any other TWAIN apps that might make better use of the scanner than the HP software.

It's better than nothing I guess.
