Hi i have a nx9420 and about a 4 weeks ago i had a problem when i connected the laptop to a video projector, i didn't got any signal to the projector from the external vga connector, after reseting the laptop twice an turning on and of the projector with no luck, i was forced to use the s-video port and cable, i got signal to the projector but at a lower resolution (from 1,280 by 1,024 to 800 by 600) and lower color quality (from 32 bit to 8 bit) also at with lower brightnes. Since then i haven't been able to use the vga connector with the projector, i already updated the video driver of the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with no change. The las time that i tried to use the vga connector i got signal to the projector but with same resolution, color quality and brightnes as with the s-video port. Does anybody had any suggestions, I tried hp tech support but no luck either.
Thanks

Thanks for the prompt reply, It works with a standard monitor, i had to reajust the resolution back, but at least it allow me to, whit the projector it dosen't allow me to change the resolution. Now the question is why if i plug another laptop to the projector it works fine and with mine it doesn't, and how can i fix this.
Pls permit some more questions. As you say "about 4 weeks ago": Did the said projector ever work when connected to the notebook's VGA-port?
In addition did you go the same steps for activating the output for the projector as you did for the external monitor?
I do not know your type of machine, nor the graphics card used in it. So just a shot in the fog: That an external monitor works, shows that the graphics card and the port are OK.
So I assume that it might be the projector in combination with the graphics card. *Some* (not all <!>) graphics card and their drivers check the signal feedback from an external device connected to the VGA port. Some projectors provide the proper signal, some don't.
So it might be that your system simply does not recognize that an external device is connected and therefore does not provide output.
That the projector does work with a different type of notebook might be due to a different graphics card which does not check for the feedback signal.
Unfortunately I have no idea on how to cure the problem, except testing with different types of projectors.
the answer to your question are; yes before that problem the laptop was working perfectly with the projector, i had the same resolution and color quality on the projector as in the laptop display, i just needed to prees fn+f4 keys and select dual display mode, so i don't know what could had happened that now it doesn't want to work. My laptop is a compaq nx9420 with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 card. Now i can get output to the projector but with the same resolution and quality as with the s-video cable which is horrible.
Thanks for the reply and the info, Mario. This sounds good.
Main Question now: What was changed in your System (BTW: Which OS?) in between?
First thing to do: Check each and any setting in the ATI graphics applet. There are numerous options for primary and secondary monitor, TV adapter etc. Unfortunately I can not give you any details as I don't know your type of computer and the version of the ATI card (my latest notebook with ATI hardware was an M700).
Second thing to check: System Restore. Hopefully you might have a Restore Point old enough to set the system to the state it had when the graphics card did work the right way and support the projector.
If this does not work, you try to kill all of the ATI stuff in your system and then make a fresh install. AFAICS it is (at least it was in the past) a "known problem" that *over-installing* ATI-drivers on a system with corrupt settings might not work. There used to be an "ATI Removal Tool" to be used for removing all remainders. You might check on ATI's website for that and/or use other sources like driver heaven et al..
In case you don't find a current version there, I attach an *old* version (dating from 2004) which you may try (at your *own*risk* <!!>).
