I've always had problems getting the card reader to recognize my camera's SanDisk UltraII SD card, but after about ten or fifteen insertions it would pick it up. Now it doesn't read it at all. Bad card? Loose connection on board? Software fix?

I would follow the instructions and suggestions to see if anything does the trick. If not, you can buy an external card reader that will do a good job for less than $50.
