I recently set my POWER-ON PASSWORD in the BIOS on a nx6125. Later when I powered-up on battery, I got the blue BIOS message "POWER-ON PASSWORD " followed by a graphic of a locked door-key.There was no prompt for a password. I tried several times to type in my "well remembered " password with no success. I was totally locked-out of my notebook. Finally, the battery ran out.

Later when putting the unit on AC power to recharge the battery, I decided to remove the Primary battery and try again. When I did this, I booted normally right into windows. There was NO blue-BIOS message box with: POWER-ON PASSWORD and (graphic key) message. I re-started and pressed F10 with the intent of entering the BIOS and removing the suspicious POWER-ON PASSWORD, to find there no longer was a POWER-ON PASSWORD. Apparently the POWER-ON PASSWORD had been reset as the BIOS asked me for a "New" password. I did not key any new password. Then I shut down the unit, removed the AC power cord, and tried to power-on with battery only, and it powered up normally without any POWER-ON PASSWORD message, booting straight into Windows.

Once I powered on with AC, the POWER-ON password was reset. I don't know if this is what is supposed to happen or if there is a bug in the BIOS which "should have" allowed for the password to be entered when using only the battery. According to "HP Compaq Business Notebook nc6000 Series - Power-on Passwords" document: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00102453&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=471753 , this should work on battery or AC and does not appear to be working properly.

I would like to use a POWER-ON PASSWORD but don't feel confident it works as it is supposed to. Any constructive feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dave / Guessous

Unless you didn't actually manage to set the password initially as you had thought
(maybe a mis-type) then the events you describe might just be caused by a dead RTC (BIOS) battery - or bad connection to it ? However, it could be the result of some more serious problem with BIOS or power management.
As I assume these machines are fairly new and appear not to be working correctly, I think you should invoke the warranty.

If you do decide to investigate further on your own (being careful not to invalidate your warranty !), you will find the Mtce&Svce Guide for your machines by following this link. (version en francais aussi - Guessous!)
http://tinyurl.com/s4qgq
This shows you where the RTC battery is and how to get at it to change it. It also explains how to remove all BIOS passwords by resetting. If you try this - you should increase the 'rest' period from the 5 minutes quoted to 30 minutes at least !

Dear Dave,

Thanks for your pro,pt reply. I have already followed the instructions you have mentioned, as they were sent to me by the troubleshooting/ support services, in VAIN.

I have already disassembled the laptop and left sitting for hours without the RTC battery. When reassebled, the blue screen with power on password appeared.
Can you think of a new way to help me. PLZ

This is hhow it started: I have already entered the password under CREDENTIAL, it was working fine. I went to the BIOS to remove it, I entered the old password and left empty for the space for the new password, thinking It would cancel it. And here is what i ended up with.

Thanks again for your help.

@Guessous,
contrary to the HP policies for the newer HP COMPAQ notebooks for the 6xxx series the old COMPAQ scheme is still applicable and disconnecting the RTC-battery does clear any password.

Pls try it again, precisely follow the steps explained below.

*--- Password-removal.txt
*--- R.T.
*--- updated June 1, 2005

Procedure to remove password
(following CPQ MSGs)

1.) Unplug AC, take out the main battery.
2.) Take out /disconnect the RTC (real time clock) battery for app. half an hour (the period of 5 min as specified in the MSG normally is not long enough).
3.) Plug in the AC adapter (batteries still removed); computer should boot automatically, if not use the power button.
4.) The machine will boot and show the 162-error-msg "system options not set". Use F1 to save the settings.
5.) Shut down the computer and disconnect AC power again.
6.) Re-connect the RTC-battery.
7.) Install the battery pack(s).
8.) Restart the computer.

Caveat: All settings are set back to factory standard.
You'll have to enter a correct date/time and change the settings to your needs.

Note: pls strictly keep to the sequence.
Re-starting with the main battery and or RTC-battery inserted will spoil the job.

Guessous Reda: Im sorry I have nothing to add, as Rainald has already provide excellent advice on how to reset the password. Only 2 things I might suggest, is 1) leave the RTC battery out of your unit for a longer period, otherwise, 2) take the unit in for professional service.

As far as my situation goes, I contacted Tech Support who was less than helpful and recommended I take the unit in for service to have RTC battery removed.

But since then, as already noted, I managed to reset my password. Also, I located detailed info on the password in the help section of the on-notebook help guides. I got brave. I tried setting the password again, this time using the HP Credentials software, and it worked. Now, when I get the blue DOS screen asking me for power-on password, I key it in (there are no ******* or any input confirmation). When I press ENTER, if the password was correct, I only get an "OK" message, and booting continues.

Good Luck!

Oskar,
for sure it works <gbg>.
It's the old COMPAQ scheme, but for the newer models HP policies are valid.
No idea on why they excluded the nx6nnn series.

Lucian,
First, I assume you've got the same type of laptop ? (The fix Rainald describes will not work on some other series.)
If so, you could try the following small adaptation of Rainald's voodoo... I don't know if will work on your machine - but the idea is to discharge through the back end of the adaptor any remaining voltage that is holding the CMOS memory.
After the depowered period, do NOT refit the RTC battery and do NOT plug the adaptor into the mains, just insert the dc plug into the laptop power socket. Now press and hold the power button for a minute or so - or longer if you have the patence. Now switch on mains and continue as before.
Please let us all know if this makes any difference.

hi all

first of all apologies for reviving an old thread but i have exactly the same issue on on my NX6125 laptop.

i have been using power-on password for a long time by now until yesterday when i decided to remove it all together. i managed to disable power-on password in bios. F10 saved and quit BIOS then powered down the machine. few hours later when i did turn it on i was prompted for power-on password again and to my biggest frustration none of my passwords works anymore. I do remember my passwords period. No chance of typo errors of any kind.

i phoned HP tech support and tech advised me to take it apart and take out CMOS battery under keyboard for about 5 minutes then power on AC power only. I have also tried holding Power button for 7 minutes while main battery, CMOS are out and AC is NOT plugged in.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have taken apart this machine a few times already and done no physical damage to the unit. Will i still have my warranty if i put it all back together?

What are my options? Will i still have my warranty when i put it all back together?
