Hi, and happy new year to everybody!
This is a long post so I apologise in advance for it and thank whoever is willing to provide me with some advice.
I'm having trouble charging the battery of my hx2110 iPAQ after a mistake (?) I made.
The mistake was to try using a different AC adapter (I used a UniRoss Regulated AC/DC Adaptor, p/n AD101707 (EU) output 5V 2500 mA which I already use successfully to charge all my other electronic devices. I travel a lot and I'm a little tired of bringing several adapters with me).
Aniway, the very moment I connected the iPAQ to the adapter I got a Hard Reset (maybe I had the wrong polarity on the connector, I don't know).
After that my iPAQ behaves strangely :
1) It "refuses" to charge through the regular (HP) AC adapter (the amber LED doesn't flash nor does the charge percent increase on the Today screen), but it "feels" that it's AC powered (the screen brightness goes to 100% and the Today icon changes to "powered"). Apparently also, when connected, the battery isn't used because the charge level remains the same for more than one hour. Sometimes the amber LED flashes for a fraction of second upon connection, but after that it remains black.
2) It charges through the USB sync/charge cable (the one you purchase separately enabled for charging the device), but never reaches 100% of the charge (reaches about 96%). In this case the screen brightness goes to 100%, the Today icon changes to "powered" and the amber LED flashes. After that, even if disconnected it continues "thinking" it's AC powered even if it isn't until the battery reaches about 80% of the charge, then switches back to the "battery powered" mode.
3) It doesn't charge through the USB cable which comes with the device (the one which must be connected to the AC adapter), even if that cable is actually connected to the HP AC adapter.
4) It charges through the special "External Battery" kit connected to a 9V battery.
5) Sometimes, when battery powered, it switches to "AC powered" mode by itself without any reason.
6) It seems now, but I'm not certain, that the battery's performance has deteriorated.

For all the rest the iPAQ behaves perfectly

Needless to say I tried a Hard Reset several times with no results.

Also, I can't try the "battery calibration" procedure because the AC adapter isn't recognised.

My questions:
a) Is it likely that I damaged the hardware or would purchasing a new battery solve the problem ?
b) In case I damaged the hardware is it worth sending the device to HP for repairing, or, being a discontinued product, I'd be better of buying a new one ?
c) If only the battery is involved is there any way to "reset" the one I currently have ?
d) Why would using an AC adapter which should be totally compatible have caused all this trouble ? I'm sure the adapter was set to 5V like the HP adapter. Can it be the 2500 mA instead of the 2000 mA ? Personally I don't think so, but also I don't see any other reason.

I hope some of the experts in this forum can help me.

Thank you in advance

Stefano Bertolucci

I forgot:
The OS of my iPAQ is WM2003SE Italian with the latest patch from HP (1.1).

Try Battery Calibration to see whether it is helpful for your situation.

From Julie:
The battery sensor in your PDA may need to be recalibrated. The battery doesn't need to be calibrated since it has no memory. The purpose of calibration is to reset the digital sensing unit in the PDA so your battery gauge will function correctly.

Here's a link that provides instruction for 2003 units so I am not sure if it is applicatle to WM5.0 units (you'd probably need to perform a clean reset instead of a hard reset):

Hi Qi,

unfortunately I can't follow the procedure described there because the AC adapter is not recognized anymore, so I cannot charge it for 30 minutes.

It's really hard to know if your battery is damaged. Since it charges it seems more likely to me that the charging mechanism may be damaged.

You could contact HP or Pocket PC Techs to see what your options are and to find out how much it might cost to repair. It is likely that either company will want to evaluate it before advising you and the evaluation will probably cost something. I think Pocket PC Techs may absorb the evaluation cost into the repair cost if you decide to have them repair it.

I don't know of any way to reset a battery, but one of Laura's regular recommendations that seems to work sometimes is to remove the battery for 4 or 5 hours (or even overnight), so you could try that to see if that makes any difference.

Another thing you might try is reflashing the ROM - that would entail installing the last ROM update for it or you could even think about upgrading it to WM5.0

Thanks for your advice Prof Julie,

I asked a quotation to Pocketpc Techs.
I'm afraid that the cost of shipping to the US the device plus the repairing will be too high for a dismissed device.

I'll try also both your suggestions in the next few days (probably next weekend)

Cannot upgrade to WM5 because the ROM upgrade has never been made available for the Italian language and now all the downloads for hx2110 are gone (I asked in another post about this).

I'll keep you informed after my tries.

Thank you.

I tried both the solutions:
Take out the mai battery for 8 hours
Reinstall the last ROM update
and unfortunately nothing happened

Sorry to hear it. Maybe this repair service is more feasible since it is located in the UK:
