Author Subject: TomTom Stalling with Ipaq RX5395 Travel Companion      Add to my favorites

I purchased an RX5395 with integrated GPS and TomTom 6 software a couple of weeks ago.

I have an issue with the above product, when using the pre-installed TomTom 6 software. On a few occasions when navigating with TomTom, the display does not move as I drive, or lags by several hundred meters. When looking at the GPS details screen within TomTom, the signal is excellent (more than 8 fixes), but the GPS is not providing updated co-ordinates.

I also have an Ipq HX2110 with TomTom 5 installed and to help diagnosis have had both systems running in my vehicle. On the occasions that the RX5395 shows this problem, the HX2110, works fine. This confirms to me that it is not an external environmental issue (ie interference etc).

Please could you advise whether this is a known issue and whether a fix is available. The system is too unreliable for serious navigation.
Thanks,
Mark Jeavons

I have a 5915 with TomTom 6 amd it will sometimes stall for about three to four seconds. There is one place on my route that it will sometimes jump off course for about 100 feet during a turn.

I hoping that when HP releases a software update that this will discontinue.

I have just had a more serious glitch with my rx5915. I have used it for short trips around town with no problems. However, on a longer trip (San Jose, CA - Truckee, CA) of about 230 miles, it lost track of position even though the display showed full GPS signal strength with all bars. There was no problem on the trip there, but on the way back, the display would show my position incorrectly. Once it was off the road, but traveling along it, often it would be wandering along off of any road, and once it was shown on the other side of the freeway pointed in the wrong direction (like I was backing up). A soft reset didn't cure the problem, but after a while it found its position, recalculated the route, and was fine the rest of the time. When it is "lost", all of the route info on the band at the bottom of the display goes blank. So I also believe that there are some intermittent problems with the GPS on the rx5915.

I purchased an rx5935 a few weeks ago and it has worked fine in the UK. This morning however I had a similar experience to those described with delays and incorrect positioning.

The only difference in setup today from the other days is that I was using a bluetooth headset on my mobile phone. I was a little surprised that even though Bluetooth was not enabled on the iPAQ that normal service was resumed by disabling Bluetooth on my phone and performing a soft reset on the iPAQ.

My new rx5915 also has a gps freeze occasionally. i posted a previous thread and got no one else reporting the problem. i'm glad to see others having the same problem (not really, but at least it's not my unit only.) Mine only seems to occur for the hour and a half or so around sunset. has anyone else noticed this. or does it happen any time?

I've had this problem with my rx5915 2 times. The first time I was in a rental car going from Fort Collins to the Denver airport on I-70 and C470. Tomtom locked up or got very lots. Freind in back seat with a 6915 (I think - ipaq smartphone) turned on his nav and no problems. Later in that trip, and on the same road coming home in different brand rental car - no problem. Concluded car interference (noted in manual).
2nd time - On i-70 in my truck - (deisel) - similiar problem - but not as bad - only couple of times and only couple of minutes.

Other times - just fine.

I'm seeing this GPS freeze problem as well. Knowing GPS as well as I do (airline captain), I don't believe it's external forces (as verified by other GPS users).

Whether or not the finger pointing goes to HP, the Sirf GPS, or Tomtom, it's an issue that needs addressing as a GPS unit that freezes is unreliable and therefore worthless when really needed.

I hope HP is looking into this and plans on doing something about it and correct the situation!

I've got my travel companion last Friday and am very pleased with it. It appeared to be very reliable while I travelled in Switzerland. However, I am currently on a business trip in Spain and noticed, while walking around in town (free view to sky, no house canyons), the GPS froze several times despite excellent GPS signal strength. Even resetting the device didn't change anything. When travelling at "normal" speed (device handheld in a bus or taxi) things appear to work much better as opposed to walking around.

You can improve the response in "pedestrian mode" by turning off "Static Navigation". You can find a discussion on this at:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1087257

You can also do a web search for "Static Navigation" and gps.

With regards to the program to change the static settings, M-M SiRF is it's name. What are the settings to use? Does the GPS need to be on?

When I used it, the PPC locks up.

I have used the program MMSiRF successfully on my rx5915 with Com1 and 9600 baud. You should exit all GPS apps before making setting changes. I don't have any experience on other models of PPC's.

That was a fast reply! Like me, you are not a sports fan (Super bowl is on).

Does anyone know if the Rx5915 and the SiRF has WAAS?

WAAS uses ground based signals to fine tune GPS receivers. WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation Signal. It's a standard feature of newer Garmin GPS units. It's not always turned on as it consumes some power and may not be needed if the GPS signal is fine.

The SiRFstarIII GPS in the rx5915 does support WAAS. My experience is that you get a big improvement in low speed (i.e. walking/hiking) tracking by turning off Static Navigation. You may get some further improvement by turning on WAAS, but in my limited testing, I couldn't really notice much difference.

It seems I am not alone with this issue !. I have contacted TomTom who intimate that the GPS driver is not keeping-up with the GPS.  (after having been told by them that the RX5935 is not on their list of supported devices !)

I have spoken with HP who have suggested I return the Ipaq for a replacement - not convinced that there is a hardware problem, but I may do this.

The tips about static navigation are very useful.

I HAVE IMPROVED THE GPS PEFORMANCE CONSIDERABLY BY DISABLING THE "MANAGE
GPS AUTOMATICALLY" OPTION ! ( control panel - system - GPS, then access tab). I assume that this removes a layer of software that contibutes to the delay in processing the GPS input.

I will keep this thread open in case anybody else finds that changing this option works for them as well.

In a previous post I detailed my experience. I returned my device for another and have no stall problems. HP also just released a new ROM upgrade that addresses GPS issues. I would strongly suggest installing the upgrade. Hopefully the upgrade fixes that problem.
