Unfortunately you have the wrong printer for your application. For printing only B&W a laser printer would be a better choice, or for lower end printing a Deskjet such as the Deskjet 6940 or 6980 that can operate without a color cartridge installed. The Business Inkjet 1000 has seperate printheads and uses some color ink every print job to keep the color nozzles clear, even if they will not be used for printing.

To minimize the servicing overhead keep the printer plugged in to a live outlet - turning the printer off from an external switch such as a power strip can cause additional usage.

Thanks a lot

i had a deskjet 840C printer before this one.... my old one used to work even if coloured was empty & i never thought that the printer will not work if catridge is empty.... it was not mentioned on the web site.... this is just a ploy from HP to make money
no more HP.... disappointed

It is really not a ploy on HP's part to sell more ink. The DEskjet series printers have printheads built into the ink supply. If you continue to print with them after the supply is empty it does not cause a problem, since the printheads willbe replaced with the next cartridge.

The Business Inkjet models are designed for a different usage. They have much larger ink supplies, and the ink and printheads are seperate. Printing with an empty ink supply would damage the printhead. While the printheads are replacable, they are relatively expensive and designed to last for 15K pages or so. It would be undesireable to burn out the printheads, so some ink is used to keep them in good condition and printing stops when the ink supply is empty.

For your usage one of the newer Deskjet printers would be a better match. Most of these models do not require a color cartrdige to be installed - the printer will happily print even if the color cartridge is not present.
