The carriage that holds the cartridges normaly jets from left to right and back on 'turn-on' of printer, and opening cartridge access door will move it to center location for access.

There is an 'excess ink' cartridge accessable from underside, needs cleaned out fairly often (w/ Q-Tip or something) and it contains a special 'sponge block' for excess ink. Important to store printer in upright condition, on its side can cause excess leaking from ink cartridges.

The Manual makes a point about not installing a new cartridge until after arrival on a trip, HP has an accessory case for travel w/newly unsealed ink cartridges.

Since it is "Brand new.." I would not go beyond checking for excess ink leakage causing a 'stuck' carriage before submitting for replacement/repair (depending on your retailer, would expect replacement if within 30 days). You could GENTLY try to move the carriage to see if it were stuck from ink, but forcing it might cause warranty problems.

Have had mine for eight months and love it, but have noticed its need for 'upright storage' to prevent ink leaks.

Cleaning from an 'ink-leak' can be a really messy job and as a customer, I would expect the Warranty Department might say that it's not covered unless the ink cartridge was 'defective' since the Manual contains "those warnings".
