Author Subject: RL653AV DV9500 DOWNGRADE TO XP      Add to my favorites
CRAIG MORRONI
Aug 3, 2007 13:32:15 GMT

College is just a few weeks away for students who have been told to purchase high end machines for CAD based cirriculums. Of course at this point in time, the Universities are only going to support XP.

So my son put his best foot forward to get the best bang for the buck in the laptop arena and I figured we could downgrade to XP.

We see a number of links regarding differnet HP models but wonder if anyone has a step/step process for the RL653AV laptop (DV9500) that currently has VISTA installed.

He has alredy performed the HP recovery CD process for Vista and we have determined that we cannot disable SATA in Bios.

He has also purchased an OEM copy of XP/SP2 and have used device manager under Vista to save off screen shots showing what hardware is currently installed in this laptop.

Opening day at school is coming and I would like to get a few weeks of XP working on this machine.

This is why a step/step would help for this particular machine.

Thanks.

I congratulate you that you are going about this in an orderly and logical way; I see a lot of posts here from people who just dived in and wiped off Vista (in a moment of anguish, no doubt) but you are trying to see the end before you start the trip.

The DV9500 Intel version (I am virtually certain yours is Intel. right?) uses the Intel 965 chipset and from what I can see HP has not posted an XP SATA driver for it. Never fear. It is available on the Intel site and here is a post I did recently that includes instructions on preparing an floppy diskette to use during XP installation.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1149719

This is about a dv6500 but that is essentially the same laptop in a smaller case. You will need to spend a bit more money to get a usb external floppy drive, but having two of my own in college I am sure another 40 bucks is a drop in the bucket to what you are spending.

The first hurdle is to get the hard drive recognized during Xp installation by using the F6 achi ich8 driver as outlined in the Intel Readme file. Study the material in the post linked above and the attached readme.txt file and post back if you have questions. Once you get an XP install on it the rest is a piece of cake and I can point you to the drivers you will need.

Steve:

Thanks for the response. The machine is definetly based on the Intel chipset (although device manager under Vista does not show the numbering scheme you show. However under the IDE/ATA controller hardware, we see the Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI controller.

When we follow the link you provided and examine the INTEL driver .txt file, we see the Matrix Storage Manager is designed for 82801 HBM AHCI controller. So this appears we are in the right spot with the link you provided.

So far so good - or so it would appear. We have donwloaded the file and the .exe file is about 5.6 meg.

Pay attention to Section 7.2 of the readme. It tells how to extract the files without installing the driver, which you can do on another machine.
CRAIG MORRONI
Aug 3, 2007 18:03:59 GMT    N/A: Question Author

Steve - Paid attention to 7.2 of the Intel Matrix Manager text file and extracted the files from the command line on another machine.

The files extracted are:
iaahci.inf
iaahci.cat
iastor.inf
iastor.cat
iastor.sys
txtsetup.oem

We then copied the files to a USB drive since the DV9500 does not have a floppy drive in the laptop.

So when we attempt to load XP on the DV9500 machine using the newly purchased XP CD, we can use the F6 key when the installation process prompts us if we want to install third party SCSI or Raid Driver (even though this driver is neither a SCSI or a Raid configuration).

I am under the impression that XP is looking for a floppy drive at this point of the installation and as mentioned, the DV9500 does not have a floppy drive. Is XP able to search for USB devices at this point in the installation process? If not, then how does one get XP to recognize that the drivers are present?

Craig you are doing great but as I said above you are going to have to get a usb floppy drive to make this work. A usb memory stick does not work. You seem pretty savvy so I will give you one other option. You can make a slipstreamed Windows XP install CD with a program called nLite.

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

If you have another computer with a CD burner and also with a floppy or even your usb stick you can reauthor the XP CD and fold in the SATA driver (I know it is not scsi or RAID but that shows how old XP is now) so that you do not even need to do the F6 thing. You can also search in this forum for "NLite" and you will find lots of good tips.

Keep plugging you are doing great.

I second the alternate method to eliminate the need to load driver via F6 using nLite to integrate the driver into a new XP install cd.

Make a temp folder on C: to copy the XP cd contents to.Startup nLite, show it the XP folder, then choose the options to "integrate drivers" and "create iso".
Direct it to the folder holding the sata driver files (usb stick, etc), where you will select all the "inf" files.
Nlite will then create a new XP iso to burn to cd or burn it directly for you.

Well I appreciate the confidence. I tried the nlite approach, but hit a snag.

I downloaded both the beta version and the previous release and tried to run them on my win 2000 box. Command line returned an abort error when I tried to run either donwload.

I already had .net 2.0 on my machine, but used the nlite link to download again. Used the Microsoft installer to remove the 2.0 framework on my machine and then used it again to reload the 2.0 framework. Microsoft installer says 2.0 framework is good.

Then tried to rerun the nlite program.

Each time I get an error: NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal insruction.

That is a new one to me,maybe someone else will have a suggestion.
I have used nLite several times but always on XP machines and never had a problem with it.
Maybe you can use it on the laptop?IF,Vista will allow it,

Cheryl:

My son had the same thought, so rather than using my Windows 2000 box, we used his soon to disappear Vista Box instead.

Download worked fine with nlite running as it should.

We then created our new "XP" CD with the required 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI driver.

We then tested the new "XP" CD by rebooting the VISTA machine to see if the XP install would get by the initial driver load and it did!

So we are ready to let the new XP CD loose and proceed with the XP install by wiping out the disk partions that contain Vista.

Sorry I didn't get this posted sooner. By the way, I had also stopped by the computer store on the way home and didn't have any luck finding a USB/Floppy, so it is good that my son had the same thought you did.

My hope is that he really understands the entire build process as part of this whole exercise.

Thanks.

You are going to need all the other drivers for the dv9500 which you can get here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3224058&lang=en#

You will have to do a couple substitutions like a Chinese restaurant. Don't use the 945 chipset driver, use the 965 chipset driver from intel.com:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2800&lang=eng

Also install the whole storage controller driver I linked to above and not the ich7 driver. Everything else should work.

Now that you have the hang of nLite, you could even unpack all these Windows XP drivers into a folder and point nLite to them and make a personalized XP disk with all the drivers preinstalled. Very cool. Good luck

Steve:

Yes it is a cool concept on the nlite approach. This way one could have a "recovery" CD for the entire XP machine once all of the drivers are included. Always a good thing to have.

We have loaded XP and using Device Manager see a number of devices that XP has not loaded drivers for.

In looking over the driver list you have provided, we noticed a couple of issues:

The device manager print out we generated under Vista shows why you have us using the 965 chip set drivers as well as the ICH8 drivers.

A couple of differences between the device manager list generated when Vista was active and the HP XP/dv9000t CTO driver link you provided:

Our machine has a Motorola SM56 fax/modem rather than the Conexant listed. Do you know where the Motorola Driver/XP would be on the HP Website?

Our machine does not have the Yuan TV Tuner Installed although this driver probably won't impact anything if loaded on XP.

Our machine has a Realtek gigabit network card rather than the Intel listed. No Realtek drivers are listed. Do you know where the Realtek RTL8186/8111 NIC/XP would be on the HP website?

The next time we boot the now XP box, we will see if the Bios is later than the one listed. One should always be leary of just flashing the Bios.

I looked up info on the GSA-T20N DVD/CD installed in our machine and cannot determine if it is a Lightscribe device that would work with the driver listed.

Unfortunately from our Vista device manager list, we cannot be sure we have the Conexant High Def Audio system to match the driver listed. Quess we will see if we "jumped" too early in loading XP.

Please correct me, but don't we have to load the Broadcom Wireless Lan driver in all cases (i.e. would be required if we had an Intel Wireless chip set or the Realtek)?

Obviously we would not have to load the HP Upgrade Utility listed for Vista, since we have the Vista Utility disk we generated at the very start (before the downgrade process).

Also just curious under the "Operating System Enhancements & QFE's" heading if anybody has an idea what a QFE is?

So far so good. We just wanted to bounce a couple of these things off you before we start loading drivers. With what we have seen so far, it looks like XP is going to be nice and play.

Thanks.

Great going so far!Don't get discouraged now,all the drivers can be found.Steve didn't mean to install all the drivers from the dv9000 page, only the ones you need such as Quick Launch,Intel Wireless, etc. The Lightscribe software is optional, but is compatible. You can also get it and free labeling software directly from lightscribe site.

You Chipset software:

http://tinyurl.com/37jmc7

Modem:

Ethernet:

http://tinyurl.com/la9ey

You most likely have Realtek HD audio.

Post the exact model number as listed on label on bottom so we can find the specs to look up hardware.

Yes the upper range dv9000s (above 9500) are not well supported on this site for Windows XP. I guess I was not aware just how few of the dv9000t drivers will work. The dv9000t is a catchall that has drivers for a whole range of models. It looks like Cheryl has pointed you to the right ones. I would suggest NOT loading the TV tuner driver if you do not have a TV tuner.
Keep us posted and you are going to get there.

Cheryl:

Thanks for the links. I listed the part numbers off of the laptop label in the subject header of this thread.

My son recalls the audio was a reltek and in looking at the Vista drivers rather than the XP drivers on the HP Website for these HP part numbers, the audio is a reltek.

Thus I think the links you provided are the ones we need.

With regards to the bios, the laptop has a F.09 listing when the bios is examined on boot up and this is the same as shown on the Vista driver page on the HP Website.

So here too I believe the bios is up to date since in looking at the tech sheets for the intel chip set, I see that the ICH8M chip communicates with the Bios.

Since the earlier link to the dv9000 list of XP drivers was for the 945 chip set rather than the 965 chip set, the bios shown on the Vista/HP page should be the correct one for this machine.

Comments on the bios issue to confirm would be helpful. We have downloaded the drivers and will start the driver update process (less the bios & tv tuner).

Thanks to both of you for your continued help.

Craig.

Your bios seems to be latest.Do Not use a bios from another model.Only use the drivers on DV9000 page that are absolutey needed,as I mentioned probably only need Quick Launch,Intel Pro.Those are the ones I would start with and then we can see if anything else is needed.
Just be sure that the first thing you install is the Intel chipset and reboot before installing any others.

Cheryl:

I wondered what order to try. Unfortunately I did not do the chip set first although this makes sense. Should have thought of this. My problem is that the chip set load was several days ago and now I am not sure which set of files to get the full chip set loaded.

With my approach of picking drivers, we have some things working, but not the big ones:

I am attempting to attach a couple of screen plots to help.

Nvida card is not working.
Sound is not working.
Quick Play buttons are not working.
network jack is not working, but wireless is.
modem did not install.

Not bad for a first attempt.

QuickPlay buttons aren't going to work for now.You will have to install QuickPlay program seperately. Was saving that for after we get all the hardware working.
For the ethernet, you installed from the Realtek link above right? It should have extracted itself to a folder when you ran the installer.Try to locate it and force the install in Device Manger,by right clicking and choosing Update driver directing it to the folder where the file extracted.
The modem, may have to do the same.I believe the Unkown device is the modem.
If you haven't reinstalled the drivers that failed after installing Intel Chipset couldn't hurt to just try running them again.
For the video, here is a stickler.I'm guessing you have Nvidia 8800 series? This is why I needed exact Model number rather than Product number of DV9500,it should be listed somewhere on the Service Tag.

If you know that it is Nvidia, try this driver:

You have to get the Microsoft UAA driver on there.

It is found in the link for the dv9000t I posted above.

You also have to get the Intel 965 chipset driver on there. That should be the first thing. I linked to that above.

Cheryl gave you the link to the Realtek ethernet and you already have the Intel wireless working (it is a Centrino laptop so it has to have Intel wireless by definition).

The SM bus is picked up by the chipset and Cheryl also linked you to the modem (Motorola Soft 56).

You are in the home stretch now!

Yep,I just took a closer look through that screen shot and see no UAA listed.

This is the latest UAA driver I can find posted:

http://tinyurl.com/2xcxz6

But first,Install Chipset again just in case and reboot before trying any drivers:

Aug 5, 2007 01:10:22 GMT    N/A: Question Author Attachement is 292063.pdf

Ok had some luck tonight.

A couple of notes to clarify.

While I understand the need for the chipset to get loaded first, what was messing me up was Steve's link that listed 10 downloads for the 965 chipset on the intel web site. After reading more on these 10, it appears that items #2 & #4 of the 10 are what is required.

I can't explain why the UAA driver was not present, it was the first driver we loaded when we started loading drivers at the start. The UAA driver Cheryl provided however was a later version and about 20 megs more than the one Steve pointed to, so I don't know if this made a difference or not.

So in this second round of driver updates, we have everything working, the modem, the nic, and the sound.

Everything but the yes you guessed it the graphics card.

Cheryl the Laptop model number of the machine is as we said before in the Subject line - RL653AV DV9500. Recall the report from the Vista device manager shows the graphics card to be an NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600M GS.

Not only tried the Nvidia driver from the HP website (SP34044) but also went to the Nvidia website and found the same download you directed us to in the last set of correspondence.

Either way we get the same error message shown in the attachment.

My son recalled when he made his purchase, he used the HP Laptop Order Configurator to build his machine. The configurator screen shows only two graphics cards, a 8400M GS and the 8600M GS. He selected the 8600M GS because of its 256kb of dedicated memory (a college requirement).

So we are closer, but I am worried about the graphics card issue.

Thanks for the help.

If it were me,I would try the Dell driver. It will by default extract to C:Dell\Drivers or similar where you will open it and run the setup. If it works you're homefree,if not back to digging.

So much success already_don't get discouraged over the video yet.

It may be time to call on HP for some help in this.As much money as you have invested in that laptop they should oblige, especially if you tell them that only XP is supported at his school. Some posters have reported getting very good support with various techs through the online chat.

You have several ways of making contact other than phone, the email request is normally answered pretty quickly in my experience. The online chat may get faster results.

I have a dv9500 with intel chipset gm965 with a nvidia 8400 gs and was able to get all the ! clear in device manager. This is the video driver I used. I should work for a 8600 as well.

I hope the link works for you. This driver works really well for games so far. The only downside is the computer will not recover from standby or suspend. Does anyone know how to trouble shoot this ? If you need more links or want a screen shot of my device manager with xp let me know.

The other thing you can do is force an install of the current nForce driver (just to be clear I would use this one):

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_162.18.html

Remove any other video driver you may have installed by going into control panel and right clicking on the display adapter/properties and do a driver uninstall. Also delete any C:/nvidia folder on the hard drive. Now try to run the driver I have linked above. You will get the same error message you posted, but it extracts the drivers to C:/nVIdia. Now go back into control panel/device manager and find the display adapter. Right click/properties...driver/update driver. Now choose to manually find the driver...point the finder to the C:\nvidia folder and uncheck "show only compatible drivers"....now you will get a big list of different nVidia graphics cards. Pick the one closest to what you have, which I guess is the 8600. Install that driver over all objections by the OS...reboot and you should have the stunning graphics you paid for.

Ok folks we are getting there.

We had found the same driver link that Dan referenced, but found that the driver would not automatically load. We would get the same error as previously reported.

Steve your link is a list of older video cards. Dan's is the correct link for the 8600M GS card included in the laptop.

Steve - the forced driver approach works! Although I was not able to find the check boxes you had in " ".

The attached screen shot shows how I was able to succeed with the driver installation. Notice I had tried to have the wizard search the nvidia directory (this did not work). Unitl I selected the "Don't search" button, the driver did not install. When you hit next from this screen, you then have to select "Have Disk" and then point to the nvidia subdirectory that was unpacked as Steve describes. You of course have to tell the installation process that you are "ok" with the fact that Microsoft has not confirmed the use of the driver. This is probably what Steve was trying to get at, I hope this helps others who are faced with the same issue at a later date.

So I think we are almost "there".

Anybody know where to get the QuickPlay program for use with the buttons?

My next move is to load Autocad and Solidworks to be sure the machine is stable using the high end graphics systems.

Thanks.

Restore Quickplay boot on XP:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-46803-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3224058&os=228&lang=en

The nVidia driver I pointed you to was only released July 27 and nVidia said it was specifically for the 8000 series. Oh well, as long as it is working.

There are lots of other nVidia tweaks to maximize the 3D performance of the graphics card. You will need that for high level CAD work.

Here is a little tutorial:

http://www.computerpoweruser.com/Editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/c0706/25c06/25c06.asp&guid=

You need the nTune program. I would also download a video benchmarking program like 3DMark you can download from here:

http://www.futuremark.com/download/

3DMark 03 is pretty demanding and if the laptop can run all the way through that the graphics are stable.

QuickPlay install is rather tricky, since HP doesn't provide a download for the program. It is also a two part app,one is QuickPlay Direct and the other is QuickPlay for Windows.
Once QP Direct would open without booting into Windows by tapping the QP key while powered off_not anymore.
QP Direct doesn't work on any Vista machines and no longer works on XP laptops with updated bios.I discovered that one along with several others here when we updated our bios and QP Direct no longer worked.Tapping the key causes the lappy to boot into XP and open the QP Menu.
With that scenario I'm wondering if only installing the QP for Windows app is all you need, since you will only use it with the laptop booted up.
Ther is also the HP Quick Launch in Control Panel where you can change the actions of pressing the buttons.I have checked mine and I can change it to open Media Player and it opens WMP rather than QP menu. There is also a browse option where I assume you can set the button to open any media player,Power DVD,Real Player, etc.
I'm not sure if you can change the button assignment witout QP actually being installed, but it may be an option you want to look at.

Ther are third party sites(forums) that offer QP downloads,or I have it in my C:Swsetup folder.

Something to start thinking about is a backup of all the drivers you have worked so hard to find and install.
There are several approaches to this. You could run a driver backup app to save all third party drivers in a folder, then it burn to cd for safekeeping.
Or the folder of drivers could be integrated into another XP install cd using Nlite.

The optimum solution would be using an imaging app such as Ghost,True Image, etc to make a backup image of the hdd once you get all his programs installed. That way should disaster strike while he is away at school he could simply boot with the restore cd/dvd and have the lappy back in top shape in less than an hour.

First off, I would like to thank everyone for all of their help in this two day process.

The Graphics card test routines ran just great with the XP Nvidia driver, so I believe we are set to do a disk image so that we can restore the system in short order.

We have also saved off all of the drivers used and still have our bootable XP cd with the necessary drivers for a fresh install if this is ever needed.

One thing that I learned as part of this process is that end users cannot rely on the driver manufacturers to deliver .exe files that will automatically install the necessary drivers.

When I look back over the years where I could not get drivers to load, I am sure it was because I did not "force" the installation by
manually locating the necessary .INF files.

Also while I understand the HP position of only wanting to support Vista on these machines, I appreciate the effort to provide a forum for which end users and dedicated people (like those who responded to this thread) can work to satisfy the requirements of the day.

My thanks to all once again.

Craig it might be nice to award some forum points to the folks who helped you. I am glad it all works and you were a pleasure to work with since you were resourceful enough to work through this on your own with just a few nudges in the right direction. I am starting to link people to this thread who need drivers for the dv9500 and dv6500 series which are not well supported here for XP.

Steve:

Thanks for the reminder on the point issue.

I had printed out the "how to assign point" sheet with the email, but I did not see the pull downs until I used Explorer rather than Netscape (yes I still use it more often than not).

So let me know if the numbers have not been assigned and I will try once again.

In an effort to figure out how to make a total system restore as easy as possible, I have been reading the Acronis manual and I see that I can create an ISO CD for my student. What I am not clear on in "general" is lets say he gets hit with a virus or some other situation where he wants to fall back to the state the machine is sitting right now (ie. no user files, no applications - nothing but the working OS & thus a working machine). Does an ISO generated CD from say a company like Acronis reformat the hard drive, laydown the disk image and reboot the macine to return it to normal or is it more involved than that? Again is this the concept? If so a product like Acronis would seem to be a great thing for a number of users.

Thanks.

I have used Ghost for a few years so haven't tried Acronis, but have read some good reports here at the forums and other places.
Imaging apps such as Ghost,Acronis, etc make a complete image of the hdd.If disaster hits, the backup image will overwrite the hdd and restore it back to the state it was in on the day of imaging, simple as that.

No points yet. Yes, a Ghost or Acronis image will wipe everything off the hard drive. I bought both my college students a 2 gig usb 2 memory stick where they can save their working files. If worse comes to worse and their laptops crash (which has happened once) they can always use the school computers in the library for an emergency. I also provided each of them with a homemade recovery disk and they can always call the "Dad IT" hotline.

Steve, Cheryl & Craig;

Thank you Steve and Cheryl for explicit information, links and advice, and to Craig for plowing the way through and troubleshooting on his son's system identical to what I just bought my soon college bound son. I'am also about to switch over an intel based DV9500 to XP-Pro we received about 2 weeks ago. Pulled a lot of the crapware off but Vista is still annoying. This thread is perfect, got the system backed up, Nlite downloaded and will make the slipstreamed XP disk tomorrow. Looks like a cool utility. Had played around with Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) and boot disk creator utilities awhile back, but this looks like it will be easier and I will not have to dig through my archives. Thanks again, and I'll figure out how to send some points your way when we get this done!

Wilbur:

Just a followup note on the Acoronis restore issue that Cheryl suggested.

This too worked like a champ once we got things figured out.

To test the entire Acronis process, and because the laptop has two drives in it, what we did was to temporarily removed Disk #1 with the OS on it and put the empty Disk #2 in the #1 slot. We left the original #2 drive out on the table for the time being.

I had my son use Acronis to restore his machine and the entire process was done in less than 10 minutes.

We then moved the original hard drive #2 back into the #2 slot and the #1 drive into the #1 slot. We then reformated the #2 disk and he was ready to go.

Since Acronis compresses the bakcup, it fits on a 4 gig USB drive.

What I am going to do is keep an Acronis Restore Media CD at home along with the backup file and my son will take one of each to school.

This way I know he can get things back up and running if he needs to.

A very slick - very simple way to keep all of the hard work it takes to get the machine where you need it to be.

Thanks Craig, I'm a Ghost user which has been working fine. I liked your idea of using the 2nd drive to test the back-up though. Thought I should also let others know that I had a problem integrating the drivers (in textmode as required) Using bothe nlite V1.4Beta and V1.35. Received an error message about opening a registry key to PnpInterface, but it said things might still work. Hit OK & the processing fininalized. However, when I went to the next step to make the ISO image, it would get into the prep and hang. Tried on an XP with SP2 and the new HP DV9500 running VISA. Tonight I tried nlite V1.3, got the same error message when integrating the driver, but had no problem making the ISO image this time and as we speak the VISA partition is formating. Thanks again!

I've been reading this thread and have been experimenting... from what i gather, amongst the raid drivers, the "quicklaunch" & "intel wireless" are also essential with integrating into the installation CD.
I am using nlite but my problem is how do i integrate quicklaunch driver as when i add it as a hotfix, it attempts to install the driver there and then during the integration and ends up coming up with an unexpected hotfix error!? ... If i attempt to install it as a driver, nothing shows up even after the downloaded .exe is extracted!?
Please bare with me as I am a bit of a novice to all this..Is there something i am missing?

Well, mu current state is with downgarde dv9575 model : Installs XP but fails with first boot with error 0x0000007B - I suspect intel has removed some stuff from their driver - someone happens have Intel Storage Manager 7.2 still around? 7.5 and 7.6 do not work for me (using XP SP2 and nLite 1.4 to slipstream)

my problem got solved reading this topic 4th time - issue was forgot to slipstream intel_inf files.

SO conclusion is:

Officially is XP not supported but its possible to run it.

Get your Genuine copy of XP SP2 from shop.
Download and install nLite (link above)
1. slipstream Intel 965-series inf file( from Intel site)
2. slipstream IATA75_ENU.exe (from Intel site)
3. slipstream nVidia drivers
4. ... all other stuff and burn ISO

Thanks to everyone on this thread, that allow me to get rid of Vista.

Read carefully through the thread, main points that are important, if you don't have a spare PC, take note and HAVE ALL neccesary drivers saved before going to XP.

I didn't do it, and ended up with a laptop with no wireless/ethernet conection, no sound, not even to mention quick launch, no Nvidia drivers etc. etc.

But fortunatelly, I was able to make my "XP for HP9000US" CD bootable first time.

this is what I did, which is explained above:
-downloaded Nlite.
-downloaded Intel Sata drivers.
-Extracted Intel SATA drivers according to readme.txt file, to a folder.
-Followed Nlite instructions to integrate SATA drivers to XP installation, by going to SATA drivers folder, and choose correct ini file.
-Burn new XP bootable.

Thanks everyone..I'm now at work collecting all files I didn't downloaded yesterday.

Too bad for HP / Microsoft for making this such a pain for those wanting to go back to XP, Is there any plans by HP of giving broader HP support?

UPDATE:

A few days later after I had downgraded to XP on DV9540US, I booted, and started a utorrent, which send an error message, that couln't recognize a hd where it must write to.

I went to My PC and tried to enter to any HD, but couldn't make it..they it all crashed..BOD..

I reinstalled everything again, except that now , I installed SATA drivers provided by Intel after installation was made..

My guess is that, since I hadn't done this, the first time, XP was working just with the drive I had installed when I first made the fresh install ( didn't installed Intel SATA drivers aftewards), and somehow, XP "lost" connectio to the HD's.

Now, I've been working under XP with no major problems...

I hope this helps!

I recently purchased the same laptop as the original poster. All I have to say to all of you that contributed to this thread is….

Thank you….thank you ….THANK YOU!!!!

Between this thread and one from another board I have achieved phase one of my setup goals. I now have a fully functioning duel boot (Vista 64/XP Pro 32) system. Well almost.

I have but nothing shows up in the start menu. When I inserted the tuner card the drivers for the card finished installing. The driver for the infrared remote receiver does not load and shows a ! in the device manager. Is this because it XP pro and not media centerall of the important things up and running in XP. However am having trouble getting the TV tuner to work. The tuner software installs without error ? Can the media center components be added to XP pro? Do I need to load some aftermarket software?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

Phase two is adding Ubuntu Linux and making it a triple boot system. I hope phase two go’s as smooth as phase one.

Phase three is cleaning up ALL of the bloat ware that came pre installed. (haha)

I believe you will need some type of PVR software to use the TV-Tuner,there are some freebies but most are commercial:

An update on a few drivers for this install. This Nvidia graphics driver has worked for many downloaders since this post first started.
Nvidia Graphics:

http://tinyurl.com/2q6ss4

The sata driver posted at HP is easy to use for floppy install or integrating with Nlite.Run it and then cancel the floppy creation if you are going to use Nlite. The sata files will be extracted to C:\swsetup\SP36132.Run Nlite, choose the Integrate Drivers option and point to this folder choosing both "inf" files.

Its my understanding that computers usually are built with the intention of the type of os used. Could be the chipset runs on drivers used with vista and not compatable with xp. By the way my 9540 crashed. And was recovered and continues to hang and crash but can restart after a few attempts. Diagonostics say to replaace hard drive, BOTH. And this happens after the warranty expired a few days ago. Ironic. yahoo or google and i see others have the same problem. With either my problem, very few, but mostly the wifi card. It has more alot more negative than postive reviews. I got a hard drive and the os coming in few days and will post back here with the results. And to the CAD people, Im a cad person and the universities will eventually have to run vista due to software being made to run on it. my college runs vista. I believe autocad 2009 is vista only.

I did read through this tread, and come up with a installation disk with sata drives that allow me to install XP on a 9540 laptop since aprox. 1 year ago..first time I installed it, I had problems something like xp not recognizing the HD's. so I installed xp for a 2nd time, and immediatelly after, I re installed the chipset driver controller for SATA disks. once I did this, the machine has been running xp smoothly and never BSOD again ..try doing this, I hope it works...I'm now in sp3
