i have hp compaq nx6310. i recently replace the main board and i got the following error
163-Time & Date Not Set.
I have access to the bios. all the changes i make gets saved so that tells me that it is not the rtc battery. when I tried to boot from floppy or cd i could hear the cd spinning but it goes back to the error above. It will boot from a floppy that i made for bios flashing. Please i need your help. thanks

Does the PC finish POSTing after you receive this error? Does the O/S load?
I see this message on many different machines after the systemboard has been replaced. Normally the O/S loads and the PC pulls the correct time and date from our NNTP server. |

No the os does not load it stops at error 163. And yes the PC finishes POSTING. I have access to the bios. I even replace the RTC battery with a new one, no luck. Is the bios on board corrupt? The the bios version is F.08. I think the original mainboard had a newer bios version. It doesn't even allow me to flash the bios. I am using external usb floppy drive; when i try to boot from it sounds like its booting from it and then stops spinning. please help. |

I know this is too late for the OP, but maybe it will help someone else. I recently unplugged the RTC/CMOS battery, and had the same error 163.
Just press F1 and it should continue and load your OS. Once in the OS, just set the date/time and then shutdown and restart and you should be fine.
If you continue to get the 163 error, then the RTC battery is probably bad, and you'll need to replace it. But in the meantime, you can continue to use it by just pressing F1 to get past the error. |

Try going into the BIOS and Reset Default, save and exit. That usually clears this for me when i have a system board replaced. |

I had the same problem, but using C.A. Khoury's suggestion (above) has solved it. When the message "163 time and date not set" came up, i pressed F1, and I finally got through to windows! You can then set the time and date through the control panel.
note: the problem had happened once before that (after dismantling and reassembling the system board), and i solved it by leaving the RTC battery unplugged overnight. However, that method was not working this time. |
