Since the spring the three of us in our IT dept have had random display crashes. The message is "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." We've updated the BIOS mult times, update video, chipset and any other drivers we could think of. We all hook up to a docking station and have an external monitor hooked into it as well. It has never happened while not connected to a secondary monitor but has happened a time or two when connected without the dock but still hooked to an external monitor. It usually happens 2-3 times a day, but we've learned to live with it. But...
We just purchased some 8530's and a couple are having similiar problems, only they blue screen when the display driver crashes. Again, updated BIOS and all possible drivers. All laptops are on vista. Still waiting to here back from HP, but he didn't have any suggestions right away. We can't be the only ones with these problems, anyone have any suggestions?

I have 8530p, i also get this error, and i am trying desperately to find a solution. I had several crashes, and i have lost valuable unsaved data because of that.
I also use dual monitors, i (almost always) have the error when i have the other monitor.
I have tried various fixes that i found on the net but with no success till now.
I'd also want to hear for suggestions and solutions.
My feeling is the GPU may not be able to cope with 2 monitor work as we hope. To test this, you can reduce the resolution and the refresh rate of both screens.
Hi, Iam having the same problem. What I have tested so far: installed new BIOS (F09) installed different Driver versions. Installed Windows7 beta But the problem is still there. I am working with an external LCD (HP 3065)
I've been working with someone from HP on this for the past few months now. HP actually has one of our units for testing. HP in-turn has gotten ahold of ATI as well. We've tried numerous drivers and BIOS updates without much luck. The latest driver they sent me hasn't crashed for over a week. This driver is still in the pre-beta stage though, so don't expect it out til end of may/beginning of june. Hopefully this will finally resolved this issue. I'll try to remember to update this thread if anything more is found out.
When ever there is a driver (8510p, Vista 32b) available, beta, pre-beta or pre-alfa I'm willing to give it a go so please keep us posted. A week without crashes sounds just unbelievable to me...
Hi, After HP changed the graficcard in the 8530 I used the Notebook for 3 days without external Monitor without any problems. Then I connected the HP3065 in 2 hours later, I had the same problem (system freeze) again. regards peter
I have now been running my 8510p with desktop extended to an external monitor, Vista 32b with Aero turned OFF for two weeks, more than 100 hours. No crashes at all. Used to crash once every 5 hours with Aero. Give it a try.
Still interested in a driver fix, though. If HP doesn't get this fixed, this was the last piece of sh...amelessly overpriced equipment I'm getting from them. I've had basically every component inside my laptop changed so far (because of earlier problems). What's nice is that happens in the comfort of my home. What's not nice is that I basically pay for the repairs beforehand.
Oh, did the changing of the components help for my earlier audio problems? No, I had to find a driver from outside HPs pages. The faulty one is still available for download afaik.
Try download latest driver from HP about your card. I think the latest update came out a month ago (i use the HP health check for this). I am running my 8530p on external monitor all the time (i have samsung T240HD monitor) but i run it on HDMI, not VGA and i have no crash at all with this setup. I had the crash long time ago, but dont know if the driver helped me to be honest. I just made sure to have the latest, and i contacted online support to make this clear (for the latest driver). Now i have driver version 8.543.1.7000, the driver date is: 06.03.2009 (check this in Display Settings > Advanced > Adapter > Adapter type > Properties > Driver).
You should run HP health check, install all updates (one by one) if any, make sure you have the driver version i have, and try again. If the problem persist, you should probably consider HDMI :). I am more happy with it because it also sends a high quality sound to my TV speakers (i can later connect to outside speakers with the same quality).
Hi Daniel, the last driver for 8510p ATI is from November 2008... I've installed and reinstalled and rere... you know. Also tried drivers directly from ATI (that route solved some of my audio problems, HP still has faulty drivers on their pages when Realtek has the working ones). I guess trying the 8530 driver wont hurt, though.
I'm on HDMI, btw. So you can safely run Aero with both monitors on?
Well, havent tried leaving them both for long time, but i use the big monitor as main, laptop is closed on my desk, and the resolution is 1920x1200 on the big, and sometimes i open the lid on the screen (i've set it to be the second monitor when both are conected) and i have had no experience with crash and BSOD as i did when on VGA previously. Actually, just today i had a small boo boo (said something that driver crashed when i opened it) but actually Photoshop CS4 crashed. And i checked, aero was working again. Anyway, dont know if the drivers are compatible on yours and mine versions, since it is different ATI cards. You could try though. But first, try install the bios updates if you havent (make sure you have all latest updates from HP site).
According to HP Health Check you must not start the notebook with closed lid (multimonitor szenario). Some Microsoft Vista Monitor Service (Transient Multimon Manager (TMM)) disables the multimonitor support in this case. For Info: Scan with HP Health. See corresponding issue in Health List.
