I've run Compaq diagnostics on both the screen and ATI 9600 video card and diagnostics says that everything is fine, however I have a vertical white line going down the right side of the display and it will not go away. Before I start throwing money at the problem and replace the screen and then the motherboard, are there any other diagnostics that can determine what is causing this problem? I should mention that I've already updated the bios and replaced the hard drive with a new one (fresh XP install too), so it isn't the operating system or bios causing the problem.

The easiest way is to boot the notebook to BIOS, if the lines are present when you are in the BIOS Screen also, then the issue is with the LCD Screen. Since, when in BIOS the Display Drivers will not be loaded.
You can also try this, connect an external monitor to your notebook, if the external monitor also displays the lines then the issue is with the System Board. If the External Monitor works fine, then the issue is with the LCD Screen.
The line does not appear when an external monitor is plug in. The line does appear when in the bios. So apparently it's the LCD screen. Thanks. I appreciate you solving this mystery for me.
