I have a E500 that will not power up with the battery plugged in. If you unplug the battery and the charger then plug the charger back in it will power up. After it is up and running you can plug the battery back in and it will run on battery power. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Hi Gary,

How old is your battery ? Battery will not hold charge from time to time. Many batteries can only keep charge after few hundred times, after that it totally dead even the meter says 100%. In short: batteries won't last forever.

The battery lasts for a long time after it is unplugged from the power supply. You just have to power up with the battery out and unplugging and replugging the power supply. Unit has been upgraded to XP.

Gary,
it seems that something is wrong with the internal power circuit and/or the "voltage converter board". I fear you'd need hardware repair :-(

That the machine starts automatically on plugging in the adapter when the battery is out is just normal behaviour.

Is the battery loaded properly?
Does the LED show loading?

In the past there many threads on this and similar problems, in this forum and in other places; one I found on the very problem with an M700 (which is a very close relative if the E500):

I do not think that it might help in your case but it won't hurt and it has worked like magic in countless cases with boot problem, so try the "usual voodoo", i.e. a BIOS reset (pls see attchment).

Good luck!
Rainald
