Okay, I’m ready to take the plunge and update both the ROM Driver and also the operating system (Mobile 5.0) in my hx2750 ipaq.

However before I upgrade I want to make sure I do it the best possible way, as I have seen some horror stories and want to make sure things go as well as possible. Any suggestion on how to go about doing both these upgrades would be appreciated and any lesions learned would also be helpful.

Thanks, a somewhat reserved mobile user.
Michael

Hi Michael,

This thread should be quite helpful:

Les

Thanks for the link it helped...I think I am going to do what others have said and wait a few months.

One other question; what’s your thought on the HP ROM update to version 1.10.

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael, glad it was of some use.

As to the ROM upgrade, basically I would say, if it's not broken, why fix it. On the other hand, if you are having certain problems and the upgrade addresses those issues, you might have no choice.

I went ahead some time ago and upgraded my hx4700 to ROM v1.10 seeing the comprehensive list of issues and I have had no problems whatsoever. ROM upgrades require following the instructions to the "T" (even very simple things like Only use direct usb connections, Remove your "owner information", Don't mess with the unit while it's upgrading, You should not use a backup made with the previous ROM version to restore your data with the new version, etc. These are the things that some users overlook and then find themselves caught in a spiderweb.

So, to make a long story short, if your unit is functioning fine, save yourself any possible grief.

Look at this thread as a recent example:

Les

Once again thanks.

I guess I'm not as ready as I thought..to make the jump. My hx2750 works great and I don't really have any issue. Every so often I need to do a soft re-set but that’s about it.

The only real issue is when I connect my ipaq to my cell via a gomatic cable. I can access the Internet, receive emails but can't send any. This seems to be a common issue when I looked at various forums, and at first I was hoping that these upgrades might fix this issue. However when I weigh the pros and cons, I think I wait awhile before upgrading.

Thanks
Michael

Not a bad decision!

Well, the way ipaqs handle memory, having to do occasional soft resets is something we all have to live with for now.

I am not familiar with the 2750, but I would like to suggest you start a separate thread with the email issue for visibility purposes, with some more details like: who is your providor, which email program, etc. I am sure someone out there will be able to help you.

Before you do, there is something you can do and that is to check and make sure that "requires authentication" is selected in the "send" options of your email program. This all depends on your setup.

If you are not certain about upgrading I would certainly hold off, given my experience from the other thread.

I re-flashed the ROM back to the latest 2003 version. All looked good.

However, as I also have the 2750, I have found I am now having some issues with the finger print scanner, that I have never had before. It used to work amazingly well, scan first time every time etc. After ROM the scan took several attempts each time ... not a drama, I think my initial scans were not so good, or I have something on my finger at the time, so all fixed now.

However, I am now finding that sometimes when I power on I find an error, and a warning I need to reset, caused by the scanner s/w when it is turned on ... or maybe if it has powered on accidentally and I didn't scan, I have not worked out quite what is happening.

With hindsight I wish I had left things as they were.

However, as I stated in the other thread .... I did like what I saw of WM5 and do intend to upgrade to it when it is a little more robust.

Thanks

I am going to wait a while before upgrading. My system is working and as you said why fix something that is not broke. I am going to open up a new thread in regards to my email issue.

Thanks and have a great day.
Michael
