I am having trouble configuring IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack to use Telstra's GPRS Service.
When I rang Telstra they said the Pack is Not Supported and the only bit of advice they could give me is that I need Build 795 or later and wished me luck (if they are referring to the Software on the Expansion Pack it is Build 776).
I have configured a GPRS Service with an APN of telstra.corp.
When it tries to connect it prompts for a 'Username, Password & Domain" which Telsra said I should leave blank, it then tries to dial GPRS0 and then displays a message:
"There is no modem at the number dialed. etc/etc"
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I am having a similar problem to Tony. I have tried several setups, from otehr forums, I have configured a GPRS Service with an APN of "telstra.internet". The Microsoft guide to GPRS connects suggest setting the number to dial to **99***1# or *99# with the extra string AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,,"telstra.internet". Neither of these seem to work with the Telstra connection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

There's no need to enter any phone numbers in the Wireless Pack setup. Just leave them blank. Tony has managed to sort it out. He had 2 GPRS entries when there's only the need for one.
Angus, I'll give you a call tomorrow and see if we can sort it out for you too.
Thanks,

I have the message "unable to connect with the current settings"etc when I leave the connection number blank or at the default "GPRS0".
Variations of *99# don't work either
Any suggestions? |

Please check the following settings.
1. Regional Setting should be Englich (Australia)
2. With the GPRS Sleeve, you do not need to enter the phon number or the extra dial string.
3. The wait for dial tone should not be ticked.
The phone number of *99# etc, and the extra dial string of CGDCONT=1, etc are for use when connecting the iPAQ via IR or Bluetooth via a IR or BT GPRS mobile phone.
4. In the GPRS Wireless Pack Configuration PDF file, in Step 8, the Area code and the Country code should be left blank.
5. No need to enter Username, Password, and Domain when connecting to Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus networks in Australia
6. Make sure that you're using the same settings as seen in the screen captures in Step 9 of the GPRS Wireless Pack Configuration PDF file ie. the Connection Settings are "Compaq Wireless Pack", "Work Settings", and "The Internet"
The 2nd screen shot in Step 9, "This network connects to the Internet" should also be ticked. |

I have put together the attached screen shots when setting up a GPRS connection from scratch. Hopefully, I haven't missed anything. Please let me know if I have.
Please note that the settings I've used apply to Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus networks in Australia. |

My GPRS is working now, it appears that although Telstra send you SMS messages to enable GPRS, it still takes a day or two. |

Thanks for the connection doco - worked first time.
A couple more questions:
What are we all doing for virus protection for incoming POP mail?
Does the GPRS network connection need some sort of firewall on the iPAQ?
Or a wider question - what do we need to do for security whilst connected to GPRS?

Dom,
Are you using the jacket with or without the earpiece?
Without the earpiece, it is possible that one of your fingers may inadvertently cover the mic hole near the bottom of the jacket.
I will attempt to answer your question on security later on. |

Firstly, just let me add that I have configured my IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack to use Telstra's GPRS Service without any problems after following Bernard's most recent instructions as per his forum entry on 15th October (Althought I had to get him to email it to get it).
With regards to Dom's email for virus protection, you might want to try out Trend Micro's PC-cillin for Wireless which you can find at http://www.trendmicro.com/download/product.asp?productid=2. At the moment there are apparently no Pocket PC viruses in the wild and this only scans for VB Script and Excel viruses. I think the most important thing is ensuring that the Desktop that you ActiveSync to is protected.
A POP delivered email like a .EXE that would infect a PC cannot run on an iPaq, and is only at risk to the Desktop that it is syncd to.
As for firewalls, I have no suggestions and do not know of anything available for Pocket PC's...
Have experienced the following issues...
1) When both the iPaq and the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack were fully charged I once received an error that the Wireless Pack was flat, had to reboot it and it reinstalled the software from the Wireless Pack flash although it was already loaded on the iPaq.
2) Have had the GSM connection drop where the indicator was flashing red... it would not reconnect to the network until I did turned off the Wireless Pack and reinitialised the iPaq to Wireless Pack connection. This has happened twice since Friday.
A few questions of my own...
1) I understand that the IPAQ 3870/3970 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination cannot work with a Bluetooth headset - is there any plans in the wings to rectify this?
2) Is there a simple way to answer a phone via a button or anything other than pulling out your stylus and selecting from the screen?
3) I'm assuming a standard .WAV file is used for the Ring Toneand we simply copy any .WAV into the Windows directory and select it as an alternative.
4) Is there any functionality or plans for multiple profiles ie. Ring Groups for contacts?
5) Is there a standard HP case that suits the IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination? I've resorted to a Vaja case...
6) Is the hands free a 'standard' hands free type cable? I am wondering if I can convert a Nokia car kit to suit... hmmmmm.
Must say that I love the SMS functionality with the equivalent of 'Mail Merge' - great feature set! Am a little disappointed with the phone software functionality... and no hands free through speaker...
Thanks for the great support Bernard! |

Lots of good points there.
I've installed the TrendMicro scanner - its a passive scanner - but given the resources available thats fine.
On the firewall - I'm playing with CheckPoint's SecureClient for CE - it works fine for Securid VPN back into the office - it also has a firewall built in - but we still need to configure a policy server to get the firewall running.
I agree - the SMS stuff is great - the phone is not so good - I would have thought handsfree would have been standard first release. Also there is a long delay on Wake-up when the iPAQ is powered off - giving very little time to answer before it goes to MessageBank.
I also tried all the GPRS functionality thru my Nokia 6310 - linked to the iPAQ with BlueTooth - and it works very well......

Dom,
Thanks for the tip on the CheckPoint's SecureClient for CE, will give it a try myself.
Also I'm just about to get the All-Locations GPRS Traffic Counter for monitoring traffic... might be worth a look for some of you - check out http://www.ppcw.net/stories.php?story=02/10/17/0662910 ... gotta be careful with those GPRS charges!
SpB also have a similar program, but apparently not as good...
As a note, standard .WAV seems to work, but not all formats, 22KHz Mono 8 Bit definately works so give that a try - just place the file in your Windows directory and change your voice options.
Thanks,
Steve. |

For your interest, Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition Ring Tone Packs .WAV files seem to work perfectly with the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack. You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/installringtones.asp - download the file and install it on your iPAQ. Copy the .WAV files you want from the \My Device\Windows\rings directory to the \My Device\Windows directory. You can then set your ring tone in the Voice Settings option of the Voice Dialer.
You can uninstall the application from your device and PC once you've finished and free up the space.

Steve. |

Firstly, thanks Stephen & Dom for your entries in this forum.
Here're some answers to Stephen's message posted on 21Oct02.
1) I understand that the IPAQ 3870/3970 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination cannot work with a Bluetooth headset - is there any plans in the wings to rectify this?
BL> This is not supported on the Wireless Pack as the Bluetooth headset technology was introduced after the functional design phase of the Wireless Pack was completed. There are plans to implement this in the next generation iPAQs.
2) Is there a simple way to answer a phone via a button or anything other than pulling out your stylus and selecting from the screen?
BL> The next version of the WPS will allow answering of call by pressing the blue button on the sleeve.
3) I'm assuming a standard .WAV file is used for the Ring Toneand we simply copy any .WAV into the Windows directory and select it as an alternative.
BL> This is correct.
4) Is there any functionality or plans for multiple profiles ie. Ring Groups for contacts?
BL> There are no plans to add additional features at this point. So adding multiple profiles is not in the plans.
5) Is there a standard HP case that suits the IPAQ 3870 & GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack combination? I've resorted to a Vaja case...
BL> I've found the iHolsterIV to be a good solution. See http://www.innovativemobilesolutions.net/iholsteriv.htm
6) Is the hands free a 'standard' hands free type cable? I am wondering if I can convert a Nokia car kit to suit... hmmmmm.
BL> Answering of the call by pressing the blue button (next WPS version) may solve the issue. I haven't found one but it's possible that someone like http://pc-mobile.net/dhf.htm may be able to make a special kit. |

Sounds like the 5400 Series will see the benefits of all the maturing technology... looking forward to it already!
Thanks for your tips on the case - I've received my Vaja case, and it suits me perfectly... got the 888 - CLASSIC (iPAQ 3800 & 3900 series plus GSM/GPRS module with snap closure)... it fits very snuggly and has holes in the rear for the Speaker, Microphone and Power Button on the Wireless unit.

Try this link for what maybe a bluetooth headset equivelent in RF. Looks like it will plug in to most mobile phones. The unit comprises of a base transmitter that plugs in to the ear phone jack on mobile phones and attaches to the back of the phone itself. Second piece is the (stand alone, no wires) earpiece & mic, similar to blutooth headset. I have sent an e-mail to confirm the correct device function. Maybe worth a try.

Wayne, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to ask questions about file compression but if it is to do with playing these over GPRS then it's a different story.
Not 100% sure but maybe an mpeg file size may be less than an avi. See http://www.mpegtv.com/wince/pockettv/
The other is streaming video/audio which the PPC Windows Media will play happily over GPRS. Check out WindowsMedia.com from the Pocket IE Favourites. |

Thanks for the info Bernard,
I'll give it a go. One of the test assignments I have given the wireless pack is the upload/download capability of the pack to transfer video & image files from distant locations back to base without having to use land lines. At pressent, I have had success with images (500k image=20 minutes).
Q. could you provide tech specs on the modem capacity of the wireless pack ? |

Hi !
I've just uppgraded my ipaq to rom 2.20 and guess what the gsm/gprs wireless pack will drop the network after a "wakeup". i get "No Network" but is working fine after a soft reset.
And i have confirm this with an another ipaq with rom 2.14 and it's working fine.
Is this a known problem ?
Is there anyone who can confirm that an ipaq3630 with rom 2.20 is working with the gsm/gprs pack ?.
And the sleeve got the latest software. |

Hi
I am using the GSM/GPRS Sleeve on the IPAQ 3790 with the latest firmware update posted on the Compaq Website version 1.0a62 build 776, 2002-07-12.
Does anyone know when the new version of the WPS software might be available (alluded to in other posts).
ALso, Compaq has just posted a new End User Update (posted on the 19th of NOvember)...any known incompatibilities with the Sleeve...mine is working great (on the ATT Wireless network her in the states) and I don't want to ruin a good thing!!

Are you getting this problem after every wakeup or just occasionally... I have had this same problem on v2.20 3870 with the Wireless Pack.
On a reloaded 'fresh' 3870 with v2.20 I had significantly less issues...
With regards to EUU3, I have loaded it a few days ago and have not had any issues thus far... any official comment Bernard?

Also, my carrier has a service where when one dials #121, you get a voice activated service that gives you stock quotes etc. . .they are doing this to drive minutes usage. . .anyway, on my WPS software, I get a message saying "This supplemental service is not supported"...this same chip works fine in a traditional cell phone (dialinjg #121). . .anyone else run into this type of problem. . .is there a configuration setting in WPS for this somewhere?? |

Philip,
I have loaded EUU3 on a 3870 and a 3970 and had no problems at all with the 3970/Wireless Pack operation.
As to replacement headsets - no idea - a standard phone headset may work, although they are three contact vs the wireless pack four contact.
Have you tried this Bernard?
Might be worth a try...
The # issue - no idea... probably a software restriction.

Thanks for the reply...will probably try loading EUU sometime during the week. . I have been able to find a four contact Plantronics which appears to work but would much rather have an official spare headset to by. . .this appears to be a real hole in the product plan. . .but my headset is already scatchy from a loose connection and I expect it to give up the ghost any day now. . .
As for the # thing, it certainly does appear to be a software restriction in the WPS software. I have heard via unofficial sources that the new WPS software release is barely weeks away. . .don't know if that is one of the fixes or not...will have to wait and see, I guess.
Bernard...any ideas on headset spares??

Hi Bernard,
I inquired with Compaq/HP Singapore about the expansion pack and this is what I got: "This is the product that has inherently bugs and defects and the final firmwares are not ready to serve the true-blue GPRS functions. Hence Spore and a number of countries have decided not to sell in the open market". Just wanted to know how true is this as I noticed quite a number of people have used it already with no problem. Just a let down as I was really looking forward to getting one. |

Hi...I think this product got a bad reputation (within Compaq) because the earlier versions of the firmware were not very good (IMHO)...I use mine extensively. . .GPRS...voice...from a performance perspective. . .solid as a rock. . .there are two caveats. . .you MUST do the intall of the CD PRECISELY as instructed and then follow that up with the install of the latest firmware off the Compaq website. . .again...PRECISELY as instructed (and with the firmware from the website, it is easy to skip a step. . )...
They are not yet sold in the states so we order our from the UK and use them with the 3970 (with the new EUU)...
Good luck. . .

Ray, I agree with Philip re "earlier versions of the firmware were not very good".
We've been conducting an Early Adopter Program here in Australia for over 2 months and we have not come across major issues. The software/firmware released with the jacket is Build 776 (which is currently on the web).
I've had a number of requests from people in other countries for the config guide that I mentioned in my previous posts and since they've followed them, they have had success with their setups.
To the people who are not using their GPRS Sleeve in Australia and have purchased these from a country that Compaq/HP sell to the public, I'd suggest you contact your local Compaq/HP Tech Support first and if that is not possible for some reason, please post it here and we'll see if we can all help.
Thanks. |

Marc, you may want to check that you have the latest iPAQ 3870 ROM from the web which fixes a number of issues including Bluetooth Manager (if you have an early 3870). The other thing to be aware is to always start Bluetooth before any other apps (and do a soft reset to 'clear' all background tasks before that). Also, check that you have enough memory. |

Just a note to see whether someone has a workaround for the GPRS sleeve locking up and the "carrier does not allow this function" message when you get a call coming in while GPRS is active or when you get a second call coming in?
There appears to be a few omissions in the current firmware that could do with some looking at?!
BTW: Has Compaq / HP considered providing the software / firmware source as open / GPL code to allow third-party developers to write a suite of phone software with enhanced functionality...?
All the best

Hi,
I am developping an application on an iPAQ 3870 with a GSM/GPRS wireless Pack. I am trying to make a GSM call inside this application.
I try to use TAPI in a C++ application, but it doesn't work (the LineMakeCall function returns "LINEERR_INVALMEDIAMODE").
is it the right way to make calls ?
is there an easier API to use ? (is WPS also using TAPI, or another API?)
is there any sample or tutorial anywhere?
thanks for your answers

The 829 Firmware update appears to be fairly solid. . .there are a few cosmetic changes (e.g. new screen pops up when you do a query from the voice/network pages). . .you can answer the phone reliably by pushing the blue key on the back of the unit. . .and the GPRS connected seems more reliable (at least the byte counters don't count in negative numbers any more). I am still having problems with the #121 service offered by ATT. . .but at least the phone is dialing it now and it is an error message from ATT Wireless that I am getting (D3SC132 if anyone knows what that means). . .
Thanks and hope all have a great holiday

Hi, does anyone knows why my friends very often get NETWORK BUSY when they tried calling me in my Wireless Pack? But when I switched the sim card to a normal phone, I don't have such a problem. Thus this is not a mobile provider's fault.
I have upgraded to EUU3 of 3970 and having firmware: 1.1.04/063 (19 June 2002), software: 1.0a62, Build 776 (12 July 2002), hardware: 1.4
Thanks. |

I ordered mine from Expansys UK, popped in GSM/GPRS activated AT&T SIM card, GSM works great with no drop out. Having probs with GPRS (new to the service). Does anybody know the AT&T connection settings (phone #, user name, password, proxy settings, APN, TCP/IP, server addresses, ect.)? I've been testing it with the "G" present to no avail. Currently using the basic build 644 (without wake-up feature), haven't upgraded. I have read in other forums of problems with upgrading sw for the wake-up feature. They now have wake-up feature but now their phone drops out. Don't want that to happen here. Any help on the AT&T connection settings would be appreciated. thanxx |

A couple of things. . .for ATTWS GPRS you will need the name of the "APN Proxy". I do not know if that is public information or not but if you send me an email, I will send it to you directly (you can probably get it by calling ATTWS tech support). Once you supply the APN proxy name, you need to go to the GPRS/GSM Connection tab (under connections setting) and create a GPRS connection entry. . .you do not need to specify an IP address or a name server as those are supply automatically based on the APN. . .leave the QOS settings as they are (default).
You then need to go back to the connections tab under the connetions tab (does that make sense) and select the Compaq Wireless Pack in the first box and the Internet inthe third box. Under dialing locations and dialing Patters, just have a capital G and that will work just fine for ATTWS.
You will really enjoy using it and the ATTWS GPRS network is solid as a rock (at least in the SF Bay area. . .)
Good Luck

Anyone has got any feedback on the 829 firmware?
Also any idea when HP will release this officially?
Does this software allows me to use the record button to take receiving calls? If NO, any other softwares can help?
Also how can I receive and send Chinese SMS? I tried CE-Star but it didn't work. Any software recommendations? |

No idea on the official release on the 829 software. . .there is a rumor (very vague) that there might be one more revision before the final. . .but hopefully sometime in January. . .
I know that you can now successfully answer the phone by pressing the blue button on the back but I am not familiar with the feature that would allow you to take a call by recording it. . .great idea, though. . .
Can't help on the SMS question but you might check the download section at www.pocketpc.com (I think this is a microsoft sponsored site). . .they have a TON of software there. ..
Good luck. . .

I can send sms in Thai (my language) using IA Phone Manager. Since there is no Pocket PC OS in my language, I use a program called Thaiwince to enable my iPAQ read-write Thai. So I guess, if you can read and write Chinese in your pocket pc, you can use this program to send Chinese sms. I have no idea about how to receive Chinese sms since I cannot receive sms in Thai too. |

Any ideas? |

I am not referring to recording the phone conversation.
I am looking forward to use the record button to answer phone call. This function would be very convenient since most of the leather cover can easily access to the record button. Any idea which software or future relase of the firmware will have this function?
Though I have the chinese software installed and can use in the notes, I still cannot write in the sms in the gsm and gprs sleeve. Any idea?

Hello everyone.

*I'm write an free program, That name is "ipaqphone". It can do some thing like a phone. Now it can dial/answer call, read sms, send sms in GUI (opie base).
*I plan to support GPRS with it. But the _Problem_ is
#How let the Data transfer with voice at some time?
#Some time the GPRS led is red when it in suspend mode,
It can not auto register to GSM network without wake-up.
#Is possible open the protocol for linux development. Such as upgrade fireware in linux. ...
Thanks for everyone.

Folks,
Just thought I'd let the thread know that I've put up an
Unofficial GPRS Wireless Pack Page on our site.
http://www.c1au.com/ipaqgprs.html
I'm hoping to use it to provide updates, support, links and reviews to resources relating to the ongoing development of the GPRS sleeve.
It currently has the latest configuration guides (Thanks Bernard!) and links to support info.
If you're developing a product for the unit or have any comments / questions you would like added to the site, please feel free to email me at acurtis@c1au.com
If the response is good, the page will turn into its' own site.

We posted the wrong version of the firmware. We should have posted 3.2.33 rather than 3.2.32. We are working to update the softpaq and get it reposted. The build will still be called 829, but the firmware version will be 3.2.33
3.2.33 has an enhancement for the iPAQ 3600 series.

You can install 776 (which is the prevoius version of the WpS software) and go backwards. . .I did this and has no problems. . .You may want to do the entire install again (End user update if a 3970)...I have been using 829 for quite sometime and it works very well. . .btw, if you need a copy of 776, let me know, I think I still have one somewhere. . .

I have been looking over this sleeve closely for along time now and I think now is the time to buy as no telling when they will release in the US. Only thing holding me back now is I have still yet to hear someone getting the sleeve to work with the 5450. So my question is this can it or will it ever be made to work with the 5450? Is it possible? Is a firmware upgrade to the 5450 or the sleeve itself going to fix it? Or is it a hardware issues with either the sleeve or the 5450? |

Hi,
I'm new here. been reading most of the Q&A for a while now. I need help regarding ipaq GPRS sleeve. FW - 3.2.33 & SW 1.0a77, build 829 (after upgrading using softpaq), HW - 1.4. ipaq h3870 ver 2.20. I can get the GPRS sleeve to discover my operators, all the icons appear at the top (signal strength, G, battery indicators, green circle). I also managed to make GPRS call.
the problem is I can't make any voice call (error message - cannot dial, the device is not responding to the command), then the green circle turn black. 2nd problem is although GPRS call can be made, I can't browse the web (error message - the page cannot be found). after carefully reading some of the replies, i suspect that i may not follow the upgrade instruction TO THE LETTER...
Using the diagnostics tests, I found out that "SIM card is not ready to accept authorization command", "SIM PIN check failed".
I've also tried using my friend's h3630 ver 2.14 and experienced the same problem.
FYI, if I browse using t39m via Bluetooth using the same SIM, it works well.
help anyone. |

Hello everyone,
I'm planning to develop my own application that runs by SMS receiving or incoming call on iPaq H3870 with GPRS expansion pack.
I haven't purchased H3870 yet, but before that, I want to solve my some concern.
1. Does HP provide any library for sending/receiving SMS, like TSP + TAPI from MS?
2. Is it possible to wake H3870 up by receiving SMS during sleeping mode?
If it is possible, how can I do it?
How about in case of incoming call? Does H3870 wake?
Thanks in advance.

As you may already know, the GPRS Sleeve comes with SMS software.
When there is an incoming SMS or a voice call, the iPAQ 36xx/37xx/38xx/39xx will wake up.
I'm not aware of an SMS SDK or library for the GPRS Sleeve. |

To Peter Dieteren and anyone else experiencing 'odd behaviours' with the GPRS Sleeve.
The following usually 'corrects' these behaviours.
1. Upgrade to the latest update of the software/firmware for the GPRS Sleeve from the HP website mentioned in previous replies.
2. Upgrade to the latest update of the iPAQ ROM from the HP website.
3. Make sure that there's plenty of free Storage and Program memory on the iPAQ; and closing all the unnecessary running tasks by going to Settings, System, Memory, Running Programs.
5. Make sure that both the iPAQ and the GPRS Sleeve are fully charged.
6. If you have installed or are running 3rd party applications, they may be the cause. See if these 'behaviours' still occur when you are running with a 'clean' iPAQ (ie. after a hard reset of the iPAQ). Of course, don't forget to synchronise first with your PC or backup the important data to a storage card before you do a hard reset! |

The following has been posted on the IPAQ Developer Site...
HP has recently released two tools for developers wanting to customize the dialer interface or integrate support for the iPAQ GSM/GPRS Expansion Pack into their applications. The first tool is a specification for the Launcher and Dialer skins along with a sample skin file. This allows developers to create their own customized user interfaces for the GSM/GPRS Expansion Pack.
The second tools is a specification for the TTY interface which enables developers to directly access the GSM/GPRS Expansion Pack from their applications.

Charlie,
Interestingly, you have mixed a fw and sw that do not go together, but normally this is not a problem, as you see they work together. This can happen by upgrading the sw and aborting the fw upgrade. Fw 3.2.29 was a test release with sw build 820, and you are using sw build 829 which was publicly released w/fw ver 3.2.33 . The "fix" is not well understood, i.e. it is hard to say what caused it to work, and then to not work, but I have a hunch. Does it work on sw 776? Post your email address here and I'll send you another test version to try. |

Headsets for the Wireless pack:
Has anyone had success with the RF headset mentioned? I have been trying, without success, to find a Bluetooth headset that would work (with various non-bluetooth phone adaptors.
I might break down and buy the Plantronics M206-N1, or the Compaq 250043-001 earpiece. It seems silly, though, to saddle my whiz-bang gizmo with a cord.
Does anyone know anything about the 252866-B21 listed in spare parts on the UK site. It is $80-ish, if my conversion is correct. What makes it superior to the 250043-001. |

Christopher,
Yes indeed the wireless pack works on the T-Mobile network here in the US - that's what I've been using for over 1 year now. It works very well on GSM, and fair on gprs - the gprs throughput is somewhat slow due to their network (they don't seem to have a lot of network bandwidth for gprs), however if you're doing say text email the throughput would be more than adequate (I usually surf the web with it for testing on highly graphical sites which is bandwidth intensive). I'm attaching a "how to" doc that I wrote after some painful learning lessons with going through the T-Mobile set-up process (their tech support will give a different story every time you call). Well - I can't find the doc right now but if you need it let me know and I'll search more.

I ended up doing a hard reset to get back a blank slate. Now, when I attach the sleeve it does not automatically install wireless pack and there is no icon under connections for GSN/GPRS. Is it possible that I have wiped out the software from the flash card required to install on the Ipq? If so, where can I find a "copy" so I can reinstall it. Thank in advance! |

Dear Bernard / Group,
I have two questions;
1. is there software available
to RECord the GSM/GPRS
phone conversation
directly on the iPAQ SD
card? Preferably to MP3?
2. is there terminal software
(V35) available that
supports the GSM/GPRS
sleeve? RukSun.com TermForce
unfortunately not.

Peter Austin. (NL) |

Hi again
This is in addition to my previous posting. I downloaded the updated (829)version. When I try to install it , after pressing the initialize button and formatting the ipaq, I get an error message, reading: error 0x2 system cannot find file specified, and I can't get past that. Any suggestions, or any idea what this could be?
Thanks

I have a 3970 with the GSM/GPRS pack. GPRS software is 829 and the ROM is 2.00 and I have the EUU ver 3.0 loaded. Everything works fine. However, while driving in the car I am experiencing significant crackle and pop sounds - which I am attributing to EMI from the engine. It only occurs at high RPM (above 6,000 RPM). I wondered if it was my M3 but it also happens in an Izuzu Rodeo I was riding in. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or understanding of EMI shielding that might have some insight. I have looked at http://www.magnetic-shield.com/products/lab-kit.html to see if I could construct my own - but I know this would void the warranty. Anyone else experiencing this problem? |

RE: 5450
Just to let you awesome folks at HP know (it's great to see so many people helping others on this board), there is a demand to get the Jacket working on the 5450... for all of us who went out and got the latest and greatest HP technology only to find that it doesn't work together :)
Thanks Again for being here,

I too have been having problems with a poor signal when using my 3850 with the wireless pack in my car, however it is only when used with the earpiece. It makes it virtually unuseable. I have tried a new and alternative earpiece without any success. I would also be grateful for any help.

Hello
Does anybody else experience the following or is it a feature (!).
Everytime I put the GSM/GPRS expansion jacket on to the Ipaq it wants to re-install the software and then to do a soft reset, annoying because unless i hit the ok button the phone is not on therefore not working.
i am using the latest Ipaq ROM and the latest phone ROM .829
I have tried with the phone on and off and the Ipaq on and off.
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated
thanks

Arthur, You might want to do the ROM 2.10 update i did it last night and my ipac seems to work with the sleeve better. it stoped wanting to "wake up" the sleeve so often. Also fixed the problem where the voice SW would stop responding after being idle for long periods of time.

Does anyone have any idea when an updated version of the wireless pack will be introduced? Bernard Lee seemed to indicate in an earlier post that an updated version of the pack would be released. I'd imagine that the new version would have the Expansion Plus functionality, with a removable rechargeable battery. I wish something like this was out already.

sorry i posted this originally as a new post.
Here goes, I have a iPAQ 3635 (Upgraded to 2002) with the Compaq GSM GPRS
Wireless Expansion Pack (which effectively turns it into PPC Cellular
phone), now everything works just fine including VPNing to my Corporate
email through GPRS Internet connection. So here is my problem, when I am on
the road I receive a large amount of email (200/300 a day). I can check them
on my PPC and download certain one's fully that need an urgent reply,
however, I need to download a lot more or my corporate email locks me out
for sending (some have very large attachments, spreadsheets, PP,s etc.). If
my hotel allows me to dial-up its not a problem but here in Europe some
don't. In such cases I used to connect my Cellular phone to the laptop with
a serial cable and RAS into work, but how can I do this through my iPAQ with
the expansion pack. Can it be done with Activsync and USB Docking Cradle.
i.e. Sync my iPAQ to my laptop, then dial-up by connecting my ipaq through
the cellular service, then sync my outlook using the iPAQ as a direct link
the same as I did with my normal cellular phone..

I am using a H3970 Refurbished by Compaq recently.I have purchased a 2nd user GSM/GPRS Wireles pack, my unit is continuously searching for networks until I query the network settings and accept the current operator (T-Mobile UK). I have checked the Sim card in a normal phone and I have full signal. I also have a problem once connected it tends to drop the signal during conversation.I have installed the WP829 Update. |

I would also suggest that you make sure that you have the 2.10 firmware update for the 3970. We use many 3970 and GSM/GPRS Sleeves with the 829 software on it and it works great. . .we did notice improved stability with the 2.10 firmware upgrade, however.
It is on the HP support site. . .
Good luck. . .

Hi Phil,
I have carried out the Firmware Update (V2.10) but there seems to be a problem as follows: On the final screen the instuctions say to disconnect the battery. Where is the battery? (not a good start I hear yo say, but I am a novice at this)! anyway The next instruction was to press buttons 1&4 and perform a soft reset. on doing this I received the message " Cannot find 'cflashman'(or one of its components).Make sure the path and filename are correct and all required liberies are available". Then on connection to the cradle the Ipaq synced with the PC as normal, (I was expecting to have to create a new partnership). Please help I am not sure if I have completed the process successfully.
Regards Keith. |

I am not a 3970 expert but when you press buttons 1 and 4, I believe that it disconnects the battery. The best way to see what firmware you have installed is to do a soft reset...at the bottom of the red screen on the right hand side, you should see 2.10. If you are still seeing 2.00, it did not take. You may want to try it one more time just for grins but if it does not work a second time, I would call 1-800-OKCOMPAQ (I think that is the number)...they may know a few tricks to get you going. We have not encountered that error in the 35 or so IPAQ's that we have upgraded. . .might just be a one time glitch...try again and then, if need be, call Compaq...or HP...:)
Good Luck

I have one curiosity regarding the GSM/GPRS sleeves, will there be a GSM/GPRS sleeves with CF slots? Nowadays everyone seems to use CF slots for storage or digital camera cf type. U mentioned there'll be a second generation, when it'll be released and is there any modification for added specs?? I bought the sleeves and love it a lot. But quite sad coz have to change the CF sleeves for storage and take pictures |

The GPRS Sleeve does not come with a CF slot so to store pictures, you would use the MMC or SD Card storage if you have an iPAQ 38xx or 39xx series. |

For others who have tested it out, I hope you can make some noise so at least HP will notice us. The 5450 does not support the "Wake-Up" function, so essentially you will need to leave the 5450 on all the time in order to receive calls. Otherwise, the caller will get a ringing tone... but you will have no idea that there's an incoming call.
I'd say that it's pretty amazing how they can churn out a ROM and say that the GSM/GPRS pack now works with the 5450 without testing something as simple as this? Hopefully there will be a patch VERY soon, I can't walk around with a phone that lasts 3 hours. |

To anyone trying to use the 5450 with the wireless pack whilst awaiting a fix from HP can alleviate the battery drain caused by having to leave the iPAQ on to recieve calls by installing a screen toggle there are many applications available from Handango and others. I can get 12 hrs standby time using this method which makes the pack just about useable but lets hope the fix isn't too far away. Any comment HP ?

I have just noticed that the wireless pack is now available from HP store. I followed the links for accesories for the 5450 and there it was shown as available for purchase.
http://h30143.www3.hp.com/configure2.cfm?oid=209493#m_50
I don't know if this unit has a different software version in it or if its different full stop but if its not different there are going to be lots of unhappy new customers out there and if it is different there is going to be lots of unhappy existing customers.
Someone in HP must have the answers to this ?

I have just cancelled my order for the new 5555. I have previously purchased a 3760, 3870, 3970 and lastly the 5450 Despite the problems with the 5450 I have not been put off, certain that HP would attend to the issues in time. What I find completly unacceptable is the compete silence on this and other issues. It would have taken very little effort for HP to add a comment here or on the Rom update notes (As they have for the Wlan firmware update) to say that a further update was due / needed to add full compatabilty for the wireless pack but weve had nothing and there they are selling it to unsuspecting customers of 545x as a functioning unit.
HP you have just lost a loyal customer.

The Wake on Ring (WOR) issue is fixed in the next release of the software for the sleeve. This is currently being finalised.
The ROM 1.11 for the 5450 was released mainly to address other more important enhancements and fixes with the 5450 but the GPRS Sleeve support also came as an added 'bonus'.
Hopefully, the WOR issue addressed in the next software upgrade can be released soon.
Thank you for your patience. |

I use a Bluetooth headset with my Wireless pack which is attached to a 3970. Originally, I had thought that since the iPaq was Bluetooth, then I should be able to use a Bluetooth headset for the phone with no problems. Wrong. The phone itself is not bluetooth. Then I thought Jabra will know what will work, so they sent me headset for a PocketPC phone. Logical, so it should work. Wrong-o, moosebreath. Then somewhere else in this forum I found the clue that headsets for one type of Nokia will work. Bingo. The Jabra Bluetooth BT200 works great. Since the headset is for non-bluetooth phones, there is an adaptor attached to the phone. I just attach the adaptor to the case.
I hope this helps,

I am using the Plantronics 1500 bluetooth headset with my iPaq 3850 and the GSM/GPRS Sleeve. It works fine and the noise cancelling feature allows clear sound to be transmitted to the callers.
It comes with a BT transmitting unit and BT headset. The transmitting unit plugs into the GSM pack.
The other benefit of this unit is that the bluetooth headset will work with any other bluetooth enabled phone, in case you want to change phones.
The only sore point of this headset is the jack is a little bit longer than the standard Nokia headset jacks and some adjustment is required to get it working. This requires a bit of getting used to especially if your iPaq is in a case.
I did have a look at the Jabra headset, but if you are going to plug it into the GSM pack, it is not truly a "wireless" headset. You will still have a wire dangling from your ear to the phone. Unless I am mistaken about its usage.
Plantronics is at http://www.plantronics.com |

The Wireless pack is now shown as NOT available online for the 3970 and NOT an option at all for the 5450. Does this mean that a new version is about to be released ? Or, more likley I fear, is it just going to be dropped altogether. What's happening with the software/firmware update that Bernard has mentioned are we still going to get it ?
It's great to see all the new devices being released today alongside the formal release of Windows for mobile 2003 but it would be nice to see this outstanding issue resolved as well.

Great news about the 2 different BT wireless headsets for non-BT phones (Plantronics & Jabra) - I have just one question regarding there use - does the PTT (Push-to-talk)function work with the iPAQ GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack - i.e. can you answer/hang-up the phone from the headset or do you still have to perform this function from the iPAQ.

I've tried running the 5450 with the backlight off and I've tried running it with the screen turned off with some software. Either way, it doesn't give the standby time any normal busy person would need. I bought the 5450 because it was a PDA and the wifi was a plus point... now the wifi is pretty much useless, since using it will diminish the battery life and I can forget about receiving calls.
If WOR didn't work during testing, why wasn't that mentioned at the BIOS download site? I remember reading that the BIOS allows the 5450 to work with the GSM/GPRS pack... maybe there was fine print that said "for about an hour or two before your battery goes flat". |

The PTT button does not work with any headset, wired or wireless, on the GSM pack. Unfortunate for a great product.
however, there is a shortcut to start the conversation by pushing the blue on/off button momentarily.
This can be used to start and end a conversation.
Do not press for too long as it will switch off the GSM pack.
Works almost as good as a PTT button. |

Clarification on Patel's June 20 message about the Jabra BT headset.
There is no wire hanging from the ear. The picture on their website is confusing. The wire goes from the base unit to the plug. Also, I don't know why but the sound quality is better on the headset than speaking into phone. It is such a change to have friends say, please put your headset on! |

Just checked the manual on the Plantronics headset
The full product name is "M1500 cordless headset solution with bluetooth".
It is essentially a M1000 headset bundled with a A500 adapter for non-bluetooth phones.
I stand corrected on the Jabra headset. As mentioned, the picture is misleading.
I bought the Plantronics headset at Best Buy in Syracuse, USA. It was the last piece available there. |

Recently AT&T Wireless has changed the way that they send voicemail notification to phones. They apparently do not use SMS messages anymore, but some form notification that triggers the "tape" voicemail icon built into phones. I am in Boston MA area.
Now, as a result, I cannot get any voicemail notifications with the wireless pack. If I put the sim back into my ATT phone, the notifications work fine.
I have the latest pack, firmware etc with a 3970 and 2.10
Does anyone have any ideas or help on this ?

*does* work with the Wireless Pack. Now, I can use any standard 2.5mm universal headset with the pack! Works nicely. I've tested it with a run of the mill Plantronics headset (I don't have the model number) and the multi-adapter for Jabra's Freespeak.

Does anyone know if the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack (aka Expansion Pack/Sleeve/Jacket)is compatible with the H5550? |

There is a SIM card slot in the 5450 but it *cannot* be used for GSM/GPRS functionality. It is also on the 5550 as I believe HP had planned to put the functionality in the later models of the iPAQ with the same mould/chassis. So, the 5450 and the 5550 are *not* GSM/GPRS capable and an upgrade is *not* possible via software/hardware upgrade.
The only way to GPRS enable the 5450 is via the GPRS Sleeve or use it with a BT/IR/GPRS mobile phone.
HP has no plans at this stage to support the GPRS Sleeve under PPC 2003. This means that if you happen to upgrade your iPAQ 5450, 39xx, or 38xx to PPC 2003, it will *not* work with the GPRS Sleeve. The 5550 also comes with PPC 2003, so again, the GPRS Sleeve will *not* be supported for this.
I hope this will clear up some things. |

I frequently lose my G indicator and cannot use the GPRS. This is the case on almost every startup of the pack and sometimes after it has been on for a while. I know I am not supposed to....but the only thing that works is to pop out the SIM card while one wait a couple of seconds and pop it back in. I hate to do this for fear of corrupting my SIM card but I do not know of another way around it. Does anyone else have this issue? Also is there any way to have the phone notify you if you have waiting voice mails or SMS messages, like ringing/vibrating every couple of minuets. Also is there an easy way to see the expansion packs battery charge level instead of going to the settings/system/expansion pack/diagnostic? I was surprised to not have the expansion battery % next to the main one.
Thanks to any comments/suggestions on the issues I have.

Does anyone know how to disable the buttons once you install the Wireless Pack. I have the iproducts sleve, when you sleve it it touches the buttons and wakes up the ipaq. Before I installed the Wireless pack it would ignore the button presses as i disabled them. But the wireless pack reenables them and its going to kill my battery life.

I'm also waiting for the wireless pack update for WOR fix. Until then I cannot use the pack. Also - FYI Bernard - I've noticed that when I insert the wireless pack on my 5450 and the software installs it takes out my WLAN operation. A previously faultless WIFI connection becomes unable to connect and I get a flashing amber light even when WLAN is powered off. Full and soft resets will NOT fix this bug.
The only way to fix the WLAN then is to totally reload the new ROM update from HP and never put the wireless pack on again.
Anyone else had this?
Any thoughts Bernard?? |

BL> Jeff, I've not come across this. Just check that you have the latest ROM for the iPAQ and the GPRS Sleeve. Have you also tried a different working SIM?
Also is there any way to have the phone notify you if you have waiting voice mails or SMS messages, like ringing/vibrating every couple of minuets.
BL> Not that I'm aware of.
Also is there an easy way to see the expansion packs battery charge level instead of going to the settings/system/expansion pack/diagnostic? I was surprised to not have the expansion battery % next to the main one.
BL> There may be some 3rd party programs that may be able to do this but I've not investigated it yet. |

BL> Pat, I think you have the earlier iHolster model from iProducts. The iHolsterIV does not trigger the iPAQ buttons when you slide in the iPAQ with the GPRS Sleeve. It has sufficient space between the holster and the iPAQ buttons. |

BL> Joe Blow, there have been a delay in getting the release out for the 5450 WOR fix. Unfortunately, I do not know when it will be released. Until it is released, I would not recommend people to purchase the 5450 with the expectation of using it with the GPRS Sleeve. |

Dear Bernhard,
this seems to be the last chance. If you wait for an official release, you might wait forever.
HP has withdrawn the compatibilty-statement from the german website this week.
Now, the function of the wirelesspack with the H5450 is officialy unsupported. I called support today and they told me, that this is true:
"The function of the wirelesspack together with the H5400-familiy was, is and will never be supported."
If you need a supported solution, you should return the wirelesspack to you dealer, get the money back and look for something else. In case the dealer refuses taking it back, you should force HP to do so. You should have printouts of their older website-infos, to proof, that the device should be compatibel in case HP doesn't remember.
They really fooled the customers with this.
BTW:
Release 844 seems to work. The firmware-updates tooks around 45 min on an 5450.

Most people bought the 5450 because it was top of the line at the time, I was one of them. How a top of the line product can somehow not work with the GSM/GPRS pack itself is amazing. It's like buying a BMW 7 series, getting the keys, and then being told that the keys won't work with the BMW... not an accurate analogy, but you get the idea.
I'm more than happy to use an unofficial update, and more than happy to stick with PPC2002 so I can use the GSM/GPRS pack with my 5450. |

The 5450 was released much later than the GPRS Sleeve which was designed when the first iPAQ 3600 series were around (3 years ago). I guess HP tried to get the old accessory (ie. GPRS Sleeve) to work on the new cars (ie. 3700, 3800, 3900, and now the 5450). I guess time and changes in technology have caught up and it just isn't viable to keep working on this. It's a pity because there is/was nothing like it in the market for quite a while. I'm hoping that HP can try and get this last release out... |

I think, the IPAQ 5450 was planned to be available in two versions:
5450/5455 with BT and Wireless-Lan
54X0/54X5 with BT and GSM 800/1900 and GPRS
(5460 ?).
The Wireless-LAN in the Ipaq 5450 is a separate
module (see www.foxconn.com). So the GSM/GPRS-Version might be planned to have a GSM/GPRS-Module instead of the WirelessLan-Module in it.
To be GSM-ready just by changing this module, they also put a simreader in the IPAQ. Some of the first IPAQ's where sold with the PocketPhone-Edition.
And HP might change his mind about the GSM/GPRS-Version just before official start about.
This might be the reason, why they didn't try to make the WirelessPack compatible with the 5450 right away and there might be software/technical problems also, because some GSM-Components are still in the 5450 (simcard-reader etc.).
Just thinking. |

2 questions/comments as to why the GSM/GPRS expansion pack works or dowsn't work on the iPAQ h5000 series.
1) iPAQ h5450 series: there's no difference beteween an h5450 and an h3970, EXCEPT for the WLAN. In fact, h5450 does work flawlessly with the unofficial patch. This has been tested by me for over 5 weeks now, and compared to an h3970. OS, memory and processor are the same.
2) The h5100/5500 use the new Intel PXA255 with a better bus speed AND Windows Mobile 2003. Otherwise, these are identical to the h5450, YET, the expansion pack doesn't work on these because HP hasn't released Windows Mobile 2003 (aka PocketPC 2003 drivers for the expansion pack.
The questions are:
A) Why isn't the patch made publicly available to iPAQ h5450 users who purchased the GPRS expansion pack? This is unbeliveable!
B) What are the technical impediments that these drivers cannot work with WM2003? Personally after digging into the software, this simply looks like a sudden dropped out project. For those of us with iPAQs 38xx/39xx/54xx we are left out in the cold with missing the real speed of improvement WM2003 just to be able to use an expensive piece of hardware that was sold to us. There are many products that are no longer manufactured, yet updated drivers and software are still being released. Mistakes can still be corrected. |

I had absolutely no joy trying to get information on a replacement earpiece and mike from HP/Compaq.
1st telephone no.: +44 207 512 5212 eventually informs you to redial 0845 2704222 Compaq sales who do not supply spares who the redirect you to spares on +44 870 555456 who do not support handheld PC's who redirect you to numerous third party suppliers who do not stock the headset spare.
It would have been nice to have a single point of contact who could tell what the spare no. was and how to obtain it which I did eventually obtain from IPAQ Customer Services (full marks to them).
Here's what I found out: The NOKIA 33xx 82xx 83xx 52xx 65 xx 55xx 88xx replacing xx Headset with either 10 or 50 have the same jack as the GSM/GPRS Wireless Jacket. Audio and Voice work okay but you can not terminate or accept the call with the headset mike.
Similarly the JABRA BT200 with the Nokia adapter for the above models will work with the WPS. Their are two version of JABRA BT200 one with and one with out the Nokia adapter. Again you can not accept or terminate calls.
As mentioned the Compaq IPAQ does not support the bluetooth profile for the WPS thus the need for a blut tooth Adaptor supplied with the JABRA.
Hope this helps anybody looking for a wireless headset ... it took me ages to find the relevant info. |

Dear all,
I am still waiting for Wireless Pack drivers for Pocket PC 2003, as my iPaq 3950 is not working properly under Pocket PC 2002 (SD memory card access is very slow, and HP has released a patch only for the english iPaq models, not for the spanish ones).
Can anyone confirm that HP is definitely NOT going to release Wireless Pack drivers for PPC2003? In that case I will throw away both PDA and Wireless Pack, and buy a new PDA (not from HP, for sure) and a bluetooth mobile.
Thanks in advance. |

Some possible good news...
I just concluded an online support session with HP regarding availability of a patch for the Wireless Pack and PPC2003. The context follows... Can anyone elaborate on what they read into this?
SUPPORT SESSION THREAD FOLLOWS:
[ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:34 AM] Is there a planned date for support of the Compaq Wireless Pack with Pocket PC 2003? [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:34 AM] -- Status Message This is an automated message. Your request has been received by the Technical Support Center and has been queued until a support analyst is available. Support for HP and Compaq handheld products is available 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Due to high volumes at this time you may experience a delay in an initial response from an HP support specialist. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:34 AM] -- For your reference, your Case ID is 3205002104. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:35 AM] -- Status Message Support analyst Deepu A has been assigned to your request. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:35 AM] -- Deepu A Hello Kevin Fong, Thank you for contacting HP and for your interest in our Instant Support program. Please add this page to your Favorites in case you get disconnected or close your browser so you may come back to this conversation. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:37 AM] -- Deepu A Kevin, we are not aware of the expected date of arrival.Once the driver is released, it will be posted in http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/locate/105_4701.html [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:40 AM] -- kevin fong Are you aware of work in progress on this? I have heard rumors that this device (the GSM/GPRS sleeve) will no longer be supported. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:41 AM] -- Deepu A No Kevin.I am not aware of the work in progress. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:44 AM] -- kevin fong Okay. Let me ask you this... if HP released a consumer advisory that the Wireless Pack is NOT SUPPORTED under PPC 2003, does this mean that it will not EVER be supported, or is it simply implying that at the moment, there is no support/solution?
This is important to me, since it determines what route I need to go regarding my connectivity solution with my Ipaq and PPC2003. If there is no intended support for my sleeve from this point forward, I need to make a business solution asap. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:46 AM] -- kevin fong Reference "Customer Advisory" DOCUMENT NUMBER: MH030723_CW01 REVISION: 0 [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:49 AM] -- Deepu A It does mean that Wireless Pack is not supported at the moment. But i am not really aware of the date of release of a patch. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:51 AM] -- kevin fong That is somewhat reassuring. I will hold hope that a patch will be delivered soon (or that one is in the works). Unfortunate if one is not due, since the product is a wonderful accessory... it would be a shame to kill it in such a short lifecycle. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:52 AM] -- kevin fong Particularly after the initial cost of the item (>$400 USD). Is there a way that I can be put on an automatic notification list for any patch releases? [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 12:54 AM] -- Deepu A Kevin, i am assigning this case to our engineer Lokesh. Please wait. I was trying to determine whether indeed, a patch was in the works, or whether this was a "killed" product. If it is a dead product, I will need to make a business purchase solution asap to find alternative solution under PPC 2003.
I guess I really need confirmation that although the sleeve is not supported currently, that something is in the works. Can you elaborate on that, or is it still confidential/unknown? [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:00 AM] -- Lokesh C Since the HP and Microsoft are working on this issue. We do not have a date of release. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:01 AM] -- kevin fong Ok. Can I assume then, from your message, that there IS work in progress on this situation? [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:03 AM] -- Lokesh C Yes, Kevin. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:05 AM] -- kevin fong Thank you Lokesh. I guess you can close this ticket. It was more a question than a problem report. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:05 AM] -- Lokesh C Thank You for using HP Instant Chat. Bye. [ Wed, Feb 18, 2004 1:06 AM] -- Lokesh C Thank You. Hopefully, the following Drawer Statement from HP will provide information about why HP will not continue to invest in future enhancements to the Wireless Expansion Pack to support upgrades to Windows Mobile 2003 or to provide support for the H5450.
"The iPAQ Wireless Expansion Pack provides a unique wireless solution for iPAQ Pocket PC products. It is based on the iPAQ Expansion Pack system and is designed to work on the H3xxx series of iPAQ Pocket PCâs utilizing the Pocket PC 2000 and Pocket PC 2002 operating systems. At this time the Wireless Expansion Pack is at the end of its lifecycle and as a result platforms after the 3xxx series will not support the Wireless Expansion Pack.
In addition to new iPAQ Pocket PC products, there are operating system upgrades for the existing H3xxx products in the market that upgrade from Pocket PC 2002 to Windows Mobile 2003. In this case HP will support only the Pocket PC 2000 and Pocket PC 2002 operating systems on the 3000 series products. HP will not continue to invest in future enhancements to the Wireless Expansion Pack to support upgrades to Windows Mobile 2003 or to provide support for the H5450.
HPâs wireless development efforts will focus on future converged wireless platforms and we will focus our resources on launching a new iPAQ product with integrated voice and data capability.
For all products we will honor our existing support and warranty terms, which include a 1 year standard warranty and a 3 year support life after product discontinuanc |

I have printouts of the german HP website, which claims the WirelessPack being fully compatible with the H5400-family (under PPC2002). The german hotline even swears, that the 5450 has build in GSM1900 which could be used in the US. I told them to take look in this forum to be little bit more informed. The changed this information 3 times in the first half of 2003:
1) *compatibel with Romupdate coming in XXX 2) *compatibel with Romupdate coming in YYY 3) they removed the H5400 familiy from the list of compatible devices (but missed to remove "*compatibel with Romupdate coming in YYY").
After that, I returned the Wireless Pack to HP for a complete refund of the money i spend for it.
So if you bought the pack in 2003 you might have a chance to force HP to take it back. But HP never claims the pack to be compatibel with PPC2002.

With regards to the availability of a driver for PPC2003, I have some disturbing news. I have this information directly from OPTION, a Belgian company that developed the Wireless Pack for Compaq and somebody working there told me that the production of this sleeve has been discontinued, there still is some stock though. But also there are NO plans to develop a driver for PPC2003. I wasn't happy with the sleeve to begin with. It's heavy and ads a lot of bulk to the iPAQ. Also, it doesn't come with any kind of screen protection (something similar to the style pack would have been appreciated) so you need a case, adding even more weight and bulk. Furthermore, the sleeve was unreliable, failing to wake up the iPAQ when cales came in. It frequently locked up the iPAQ, forcing a soft reset. And a couple of times it broke down completely so I had to send it back in for repairs. I decided to shelve it. |

I own A ipaq 3950 with the gprs sleeve, after I tried to upgrade the software of the expansion pack I reach to the step where it starts copying files but does nothing, the sleeve is in perfect condition and is recognized by my ipaq meaning that maybe it is some kind of bios reset problem?... does anybody have a idea? In the past I have upgraded the expansion pack with out any problem.

Hello all
I don't know if anybody is still using this forum thread but here goes.
I just bought a GSM/GPRS sleeve for my Ipaq 3800 from Ebay. (June 2005) It works fine but was there ever any update to allow it to use the front speaker and microphone as a handsfree unit, or is it just the sleeve speaker and microphone held to the ear. I didn't get a ear piece unit. The unit works great and I updated my rom to allow it to wake up on an incoming call but still can't see the functionality for what I'm looking for.
Also it came with no manual or software disk, any ideas where I can get a hold of them in case I'm missing something.
If there is anyone still out there, I hope you can help.
Thanks from Bonnie Scotland. Andy |

To my knowledge there was not. We had about 50 of these combinations at one point...and we really liked them...other than their size.
The phone software still is 10 times better than what Microsoft is producing.
Be sure you have the latest firmware for both your device and your sleeve. What version of the software/firmware are you using.
Thanks

Dear Andy, by construction of the pack, it's not possible to use the ipaq's speaker and mic instead of the ones in the pack. The GSM-Audio is not routed to the ipaq. Therefore, it's not possbile to use e.g. a BT-Headset with a BT-enabled Ipaq together with the pack. Even the original wired Headset is not comaptible with popular mobile headset. So if you lose this one, you need the original one from HP. Any Nokia/Motorola-Headset won't work, because of a different circuit. I don't know why there where so stupid and didn't use the same as Nokia and provide an action button in the headset for taking calls.
You didn't need the latest update to use the pack with ipaq 3800. The last offical update 829 would be enough. The unoffical 884-Update is only for the wakup-issue with ipaq 5450. The pack doesn't work under PPC2003.
I don't think, the pack is better than Micrsoft. It's not very reliabel (ipaq didn't wake up on calls or hangs), expensive and bulky. A BT-enabled mobile Phone together with a BT-enabled Ipaq is a much better combination.

Thanks for the reply even if it was a bit disappointing to read.
I was going to make a cable to output from the top of the jacket at the 2.5mm socket which I now know is 4 pole. I was wonder if anyone knows the format of these four contacts. I would guess 2 are for the speaker and 2 are for the microphone, but does anybody know contacts are for which device.
Hope somebody can help.

If you look earlier in the thread, you will see the specs for the earpiece.
BTW, I did not say the device was better than what MS has today...just the phone software.
Also, the 'unofficial' releases went up to 889. 889 corrected deficiences in the handling of 911 calls in the US. It was, to the best of my knowledge, the last packaged software for the device.
It was bulky and slow...but the software for the phone (IMHO) was excellent in terms of call handling and human factors.
Good luck...

Hi,
I have been given a Wireless Pack and a 3970 iPAQ. I have been trying to get up and running with it but despite repeated attempts at executing the latest Wireless Pack update (SP23588-version 829) having previously tried version 776 (SP21805), I keep getting stalled by an error message that states:
"Wireless Pack for GMS/GPRS Networks Update Release 2 - The jacket is not recognised or absent"
I first got this while attempting to install SP21805 and was never able to get around it.
It appears to imply the Wireless pack is switched off but I can't see where to switch it on apart from the blue button on the rear which on pressing does nothing. Also no matter how long I leave the sleeve attached to the iPAQ and leave them in the cradle charging, each time I remove the sleeve and re-attach (as per the instructions during the execution of the SP files) I always get the message:
"Your Eextended Battery has become critically low. The expansion pack will be powered off. To continue using this expansion pack, you will need to charge it".
This is rather annoying considering I have left it on charge for over 12hrs!!!
Can anyone please, please advise what the issue might be and what I can do to rectify it?
I have literally trawled the internet unsuccessfully until I chanced across a thread by another party, highly recommending this thread by Bernard Lee (which I had to search diligently to find - it wasn't easy). I am getting to my wits end... :-((
Many thanks in advance for your assistance which I am looking forward to.
Best regards. |

First you have to check, if the charging-process for the pack started: The LED on the back should light up in red and switch to green if the pack is full. If the light doesn't come up, you must replace the internal battery, because it's totally drained (or bad) and appears to be a short circuit for the charging process. In that case, charging won't start. You might try to precharge the battery removing it from the pack and put it on 3-4V for 5 to 10 minutes, but i strongly suggest to replace it. If the light change from red to green after a short time, the battery is either full or damaged (when it was empty before charging).
You need a charged battery to successfully update the wirelesspack.

Hi Patrick,
Many thanks for the information. :-))
I now know why things are not going as they should. When I plug the power jack into the sleeve's power port or attach the sleeve to the iPAQ and place in the cradle, nothing happens - no red light, no green light either. Guess the battery is as dead as a dodo! The same seems to be the unfortunate state for both wireless packs I now possess. :-((
So, need a new battery then... any ideas where I can get a new battery for these no-longer-produced wireless packs from and is it an easy case of swapping or does it involve a bit of soldering?
Thanks again in advance for your response.
Much appreciated.
Regards. |

Every once in a while, the battery in the sleeve will just go bad...especially with age. You may be able to find a unit on ebay or you may be able to have the old battery replaced...don't know if HP has any spares...the device was manufactured by Option for HP and they may have some suggestions. You also should try and get a hold of a copy of 854 software. It was much better than 829...although never officially released by HP, it is available on the web...if you read this entire thread, you will see ways of getting it. The phone software in this sleeve is still better than what is currently available with PocketPC 2nd edition. Too bad that HP could not continue its development.
Good Luck

Hi Philip Blank,
Thanks a lot for your post. I did read through the entire thread top to bottom and the other way up but could not find any references to the version you referred to 854. I did see quite a few about ver 884 but they appeared to relate only to the 54xx series.
Maybe you have this link somewhere in your "Favorites" and can post it....?
In the meanwhile I'll go check out these "Options" people for battery info.
Thanks in advance for your continued help. |

Still looking for a battery pack or somewhere I can get a new one installed on the sleeve.
In the meanwhile can anyone answer this query: each time I insert the sleeve and get the battery warning message, I find I am unable to power off the iPAQ and need to perform a Soft reset. When this is done though I then get the mesage:
"Wireless.exe is not a valid Pocket PC application."
I then have to click more than once on the little 'x' to get rid of the message but then the iPAQ goes into a cycle of soft resets at then end of which the same message is repeated which on closing results in the soft reset and thus does it continue. The only way to stop it is to carry out a hard reset. :-(
Any thoughts on what might be ocurring in the "background" and what to do to resolve? Or is it simply to do with the incomplete installation of the wireless pack?
As always, your valued advise sought with thanks.
Regards. |

If you can post your email address (perhaps in your profile), I can see about getting you a copy of 854. There was also 882 which attempted to address 5400 issues and 884 which addressed a US based 911 issue. Make sure that you have the latest firmware in your 3970...you may need to reload the firmware into your sleeve but if the battery is shot, perhaps it is somehow causing your issue.
Good luck...
Phil
P.S. At one point, we had about 45 sleeves in operation here and that is not an issue that sounds familiar. |

Hi Philip I have a very old unused email address: evans-teejay@talk21.com
Please send the update to this address.
(I no longer use it, it's heavily spammed so it doesn't bother me to post the address here. Spammers, spam away if you feel the need... Heh heh.. :-)) )
I opened the wireless pack last night and noticed that the battery although very easy to access, is wrapped up in some manner of foil with the flat floppy style of connection which looked soldered/glued on - couldn't tell. So it doesn't look like it's going to be as easy as I thought to replace it. Maybe I'll contact HP Support - if I manage to find a battery. ;-)
Thanks Philip. |

I have read about the 882 version of the GSM jacket software for the 54xx IPAQ series. Could I request to send me this update? My e-mail address is amscoutinho@uol.com.br Another question, does anyone know where I can get the version that I am running? I believe it is 829,but I am not sure. Thank you a lot for your help. |

The 829 software should be available on the 3970 support page...
Good luck...
