I recently got an HP Pavilion dv6125se and it works great, except for one small problem with wireless connections. I've got 2 other computers wirelessly connected to the internet which have no problem, it just appears to be this one. The computer came equipped with a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN card. The problem is that sometimes it decides to not find networks completely and sometimes just shuts off by itself. When I try and open HP Network Assistant, it simply just doesn't execute and I end up just rebooting the computer to temporarily solve the problem. I've updated the drivers as much as possible and it still happens. I was considering that it may be a problem with my router (which is a Dell) but it sometimes just won't find any networks as I stated before. Is it a hardware malfunction?

I had an similiar problem with my notebook acer with wireless card. I had to change the antenna in notebook display and the card with new one. Now i am using CM-9 wifi miniPCI slot card with atheros chipset and got no problems and great signal streng.
In your case there can be a problem with power, try to clean miniPCI slot if you are using it for wifi or try to turn of the power saving.
Hmm, is HP paying attention - there are at least two other similar threads - I am having the same problem with an HP dv6113, also with the broadcom chipset - my other laptops connect fine, the HP is quite intermittent. I think there is either a HW problem or as one of the other threads suggest a driver problem where there are two drivers sets (NVIDIA and broadcom) vying for the same PC resource causing intermittent problems with the wireless.
Since HP seems to not want to respond to these and it took me a long time to find the answer, I've signed up for an account SOLELY so that I can let you know how I fixed this problem (after tons of research, I might add).
WHAT WORKED FOR ME: It has to do with the power settings for the Intel Pro wireless card.
Go to Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager. Select Intel Pro under Network Adapters. Right Click and Select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, there is a setting for Power Management. On Windows XP, this is a slider with Max Battery on one end and Max performance on the other. You have to set it to Max Performance. This fixed it for me.
I have had the exact same issue with a DV6095ea (Broadcom Wireless Lan Adapter). The Broadcom adapter was not detected in device manager and the wireless button on the front of the laptop did nothing. Re-installing the broadcom drivers and HP wireless assistant sometimes worked once then after another reboot did nothing.
Then i tried updating the BIOS bbut again no improvements.
I updated the Broadcom and HP Wireless Assistant which did nothing.
After reading a number of other links i upgraded the NVIDIA video drivers (??) (from version 8.6.0.2) to the latest Mircosoft provided drivers from Windows Update (to 8.6.3.8) which has resolved the issue 100%.
The issue seems related to possible IRG conflicts.
I have hp pavilion dv6058cl with the same problem.I updated the broadcom and nvidia drivers and now it's worst then before. Sometimes i can't initialize the screen, nothing appears, and the wireless insists to disapear. Please help me...
1. You run into the "wireless is gone" situation, e.g. after automatic Standby. 2. Now disable WLAN manually (switch off using the WiFi button). 3. Force Standby (close the case and wait until all lights after off, which may take some seconds). 4. Switch on the WLAN button again. 5. Afterwards (not before) open the case again and press some button in order to wake up the notebook again.
Hi, i have exact the same problem with a brand new HP Pavilion dv6540eg , bought in germany.
I did not try the method with the standby yet, will do tonight at home, but i must point out it makes me nuts always to be forced to boot the laptop again after the connection gets lost. I use a fritzbox wlan router and with a dell notebook (my wifes) it works fantastic without problems even outside the house in the gardens and without always loosing the connection.
I have Vista Home Premium pre installed on the HP Pavilion dv6540eg .
Is it a problem of the driver ? I read somewhere in the internet that Broadcom does not give support with Vista drivers.
Any help or hint is highly appreciated.
the notebook itself is fantastic, fast an reliable under Vista, great ... only that damned Broadcom device.
OP here, after messing with the problem constantly I have found the best thing to do for me is to use the Broadcom Wireless Config Utility. The problem I've found seems to be that the HP network assistant doesn't seem to be registered with Microsoft and has conflicts with the hardware.
I got a Pavilion dv6000 at least i think its a 6000... anyways i was working on it today when out of the blue the wireless internet stoped working. i went into the device manager and "Teredo Tunneling Psed-Interface" shows up with the error sign. so i click on it and it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information(in the Registy)is incomplete or damaged.(Code 19)" of course this happened after a windows update. The light on the wireless switch now stays orange (off) when in the on or off position. the driver is called tunmp.sys. i have tried to replace it with a different driver from another machine, but it says that i have the latest driver installed. i also tried unistalling it but Vista never found it agaian (in add hardware) untill i performed a system restore.
im not too sure what to do. any help would be appreciated.

I have experienced the same problem wit an HP Pavilion dv9000. I managed to fix the problem by opening up the bottom center panel and physically removing and reinstalling the wireless card, including removing and reattaching the two power wires. The power wires have "pop on" connectors, and Im really not impressed with the connection they make. I believe the problem is caused by a bad connection; the wires can come off when the notebook is moved, and may be making only slight contact, which would explain the intermittancy of your problem. The dv6000 series uses the same WLAN card as mine, so I would definitely give this a try. Hope this helps!
I have adv9205us that was working fine for 5 months and now experiencing many of the same problems. Replaced the Broadcomm card after fighting it with HP. Reinstalled drivers so often not sure what i have. Somehow it worked for a few days and then i shut down one night. Now back to the orange light. No doubt it is software -have Vista and using a Belkin router, which is fine on other wireless pcs in the home. Any more findings? HPs wants me to do a complete system redo, which sounds dumb since it will probably happen again eventually if we don't get to the why.

When you finally give up putting your laptop into sleep mode, restarting and getting frustrated when your wireless deivce is no longer in the device list, do the following:
Open up your network connections from the control panel.
Disbale (don't delete) your LAN and 1394 connections (they should get a red X on them after they are disabled)
Restart the computer.
Now you have wireless and it works like a charm, right. Good.
If you need to use your LAN connection, feel free to enable it again from Netowrk Connections. I have not bothered to test if the wireless if always available if you enable your other adapters.
The reason this happens is a minor conflict. I am sure HP will come out with a small patch if they happen to notice this solution.
This is a well documented prob with this series of notebooks and if you do a search on the Internet you'll find lots and lots of unhappy and frustrated people. None of the fixes work and HP tech support is absolutely horrendous. I have wasted hours and hours troubleshooting this issue and dealing with HP's inept tech support to no avail. Replacing the WLAN card and MoBo do not even solve the issue. In addition, there are other well documented issues (Displays going black, continuous beeping noises, not starting, etc) that will most likely crop up over a short period of time from what I've researched. Unfortunately, these notebooks are crap and HP is doing nothing to recall/replace them. Even folks who's notebooks are still under warranty are having huge issues resolving this issue with HP. My warranty expired on my DV6000 a few weeks ago so now I am screwed and stuck with a 13 month old notebook that doesn't work correctly and will most likely have serious additional issues in the near future. I totally regret buying this pc and realize now that I've wasted a lot of money. Along with everyone else who bought this series of notebooks I am extremely dissatisfied with the product and HPâs lack of support to itâs customers.
Hi everyone!!! I have the same f**k**g problem!! My laptop is a HP dv9000. The wireless works duging the last 8 months until suddently stops working (The famous orange light). I have tried all. Restar to shipping settings, reinstall drivers and nothing works. The thing is that the card its not recognized by the Device Manager. Maybe its becouse its turned off... its possile that the switch is broken, but who knows... Id like to check it out by my self but im affraid about it. Id like that 9Nuke could help me in addvice to open my laptop. I just dont know how to reach the wireless card. Sorry about my english...
As I said before, the Broadcom Wireless client has given me the least troubles. I had to completely uninstall the HP Wireless Assistant though and there seems to be hardware conflicts when I have both the LAN and WLAN active (i.e. I get the blue screen). But it has been the best solution I have found so far.
My friend did some extensive research on it and his conclusion was that there seems to be a conflict through software in which Windows has a hard time reading information from the HP Wireless Assistant. This is what causes it to shut down constantly and randomly lose drivers and whatnot. I don't remember specifically what he said but that was the basics.
I have the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv6110us Notebook. I've read tons of posts about the same problem with no solution. I've contacted HP Support, and the tech guy had said its a hardware issue, and asked for my info (name, phone, address) etc, and I gave it to him. After that, I got an email of my request to have my laptop shipped back to HP so it could be worked on. The thing is, they had sent the box to my old address and I had to call FedEx to have them re-route back to my new place, this is after I have specifically told the tech guy that I had moved. So now I fear I might not get my laptop back if I send it back to them. Also, in the request form, it said my Warranty Status was In Warranty, but its been about 2 weeks now (since I ran into the shipping problem) and now my laptop is out of warranty. In the end, I don't think I'll be sending my laptop back because I've tried all the solutions people submitted, there are lots of people who sent their laptops back who still get the problem. I think its not worth my time, I can't afford to not have my laptop for weeks, I just started school again. Another disappointed HP customer...
________________________________________ I know the feeling.I have just spent all week trying to fix the same problem with my new DV6152EU. I have just solved the problem with the adapter and i have restarted the laptop ten times and it is now finding the Broadcom 802.11 wireless WLAN everytime. My solution is as follows: Insert the battery with power off.Turn laptop on and allow to start normally.Once fully loaded up,select shutdown from start menu.Remove power and then the battery. IMPORTANT STEP AS FOLLOWS: Leave mains power switched off and keep the battery out of the laptop.Press and hold in the POWER ON switch on the laptop for 20 seconds and then release. Plug the laptop to the mains socket with battery still left out and power up as normal. The adapter should now be visible. THE REASON: The motherboard, battery and adapter are having an undiagnosed conflict as stated in another responce.Pressing and holding the POWER ON button with no external power source clears the motherboard and any internal power storing devices of their power, allowing the adapter to reset and work. This must be a problem with thousands of laptops made by HP and i was surprised that no information on patches or updated drivers are available for this particular fault as it has occured in many countries. I really hope this helps all of you as i was going dizzy trying to cure this fault and the feeling of relief when it worked was immense. HP dont seem to be responding as a few of you have stated, very very very poor assistance from them.Broadcom also are not blameless and both companies should get together and come up with a solution as laptops are designed to be mobile, but that isnt the case if the wireless function is faulty.
I bought a HP Pavilion dv6338se 5 months ago and first it failed to find the DVD player about 3 weeks ago and the HP online chat helped me with the problem. Then I noticed that sometimes my wireless networking would just stop and I would have to just reboot, then of course it went out completely and I couldn't find it in my device manager. I tried system recovery (complete with losing EVERYTHING) (sorry about the screaming), taking out the wireless card and reseating it, replacing the wireless card, flashing the BIOS, installing new drivers, and I did all of these things over and over thanks to stoopid HP techs that think that if you try it one more time it will be magic. Now they want me to send my computer to them for 4 weeks and that's not an idea that I am fond of. In order to get them to send me a new wireless card I had to email Mark Hurd HP's CEO and threaten to contact Better Business Bureau. I suggest that we all contact consumer services and demand satisfaction. The company doesn't make it without people like us. You can call Mary Simpson or her supervisor Tim Metcalf at 1-800-756-0608 option 7. I'm tired of getting ripped off by the rich co-operations when they could just look at their own message board and see that there is a problem with their systems.
I have the same problem. It seems that we are a lot of people having this f**ing problem!!, and HP is doing nothing to solve this. I've read tons of posts about the same problem with no solution. I've contacted HP Support, but they don´t know whats going on. HP WE NEED HELP!!! PLEASE!!!
Harold: Hello John Harold: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebooks. This is Harold. How may I help you today? John Hoang: Hi, I'm having problems with getting my notebook to recognize my wireless adapter. Harold: I am sorry for the issue you are experiencing with your Notebook. I will try my best in resolving the issue. Harold: It would be helpful if you could give me a detailed description of the problem and the exact status. This would helpmasist ybt. John Hoang: I have already tried updating the BIOS, wireless adapter driver, and HP Wireless Assistant. Harold: Thank you for confirming the same. Harold: May I know whether you are using Windows 98, XP OR Vista Operating system? Harold: May I know the Serial Number (eg: CNS34915MC) and Product Number (eg:DS542U) of your Notebook? You may find that on a sticker attached to the underside of the Notebook. John Hoang: Windows XP John Hoang: 2cb6451zph John Hoang: rg264uar Harold: Thank you for the information provided. Harold: May I have 2-3 minutes of your time, while I search the information for you? John Hoang: Sure Harold: Thank you John Hoang: There is an HP support forum with several members experiencing the same problem as I am John Hoang: The link is http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1087188&admit=-682735245+1193300588099+28353475 Harold: Thank you for your time and patience Harold: Please provide me the date of purchase of the notebook John Hoang: I don't remember the exact date. But it was either August or September of 2006 Harold: Thank you for confirming the same. Harold: John, to resolve your issue you need to send your notebook to HP for repair John Hoang: Oh, okay. John Hoang: Is there a location near Las Vegas? Harold: The cost for the mailin repair is $298 Harold: If you wish I can take request for the same from this chat session John Hoang: The repair isn't covered under warranty? Harold: In our records your notebook warraty says it is expired Harold: Here are the warranty details Harold: Start date : 15 Nov, 2006
End date : 19 Mar, 2007 John Hoang: I see. John Hoang: Do I have any other options besides the mail in repair of $298? Harold: As we have performed with all the troubele shooting steps, you have to send the notebook for repair Harold: If you wish, I can take request for the same from this chat session John Hoang: So pretty much I'm gonna pay $298 for a new motherboard, right? Harold: John, that is for the service setup and a warranty for 90 days for yoru notebook and if anything happens after the notebook is send for repair then it 90 days the repair wil be done free of cost John Hoang: That's great and all. But from my view point, it's $298 to fix a wireless adapter. Harold: Yes, you are right John Hoang: That's a little more than I'd pay to fix a wireless adapter. So I'll just let it be and remember not to buy HP again. John Hoang: Thanks for your time. Harold: Thank you for contacting HP Total Care Real-Time chat support. If you need further assistance, please contact us again, chat support is available 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Please contact us again at: http://www.hp.com/support/chat Harold: Bye, have a great time.
Well if you push the right buttons you can get service, I did! HP sent me a box through Fedex and I sent my notebook in on 10/23/07 at about 12:30 P.M. through Fedex and received it back on 10/25/07 at 1:30 P.M. It is now working and has a new motherboard.
Recently my friend had same issue with HP Pavilion dv2312us Notebook with Vista, One fine day, his wireless lan device was missing from Device manager and wireless light on notebook was not blue(active). I tried all above mentioned fixes, even reseated the Wireless card but it did not worked. Finally I updated the Bios from HP site
I am also facing problems with my wireless connection HP Pavilion dv6125se.It has stopped detecting the wireless network all of a sudden, and the wireless light is always orange, never blue.
I am also having problems with the sound... I can only hear the sound when I connect my headset to the laptop. Without external speakers or headset there is no sound whatsoever. I have tried all the troubleshooting tips but nothing helped!
I don't know how to fix these problems. Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated. I have windows xp.
This appears to be a recurring problem. I am working on getting a solution, and would appreciate everyone's help! Please e-mail the following information to hp.consumers@gmail.com:

You will receive a reply from me. The more people that can provide information, the better!
I have experienced the same problems with a dv9000z (AMD Turlon64x2). Initially, I found that I had to alternate between normal and safe mode boots to get going. Typically that meant a minimum of three boots, with the second in safe mode. Boot logs revealed that the failed efforts involved a failure of a number of drivers to load, notably those associated with power management.
Some improvement occurred with HP's latest driver upgrade, which included a BIOS flash and video driver upgrade. I noticed that things went better with the Nvidia tray icon enabled and an nview desktop selected, even if only the default existed. Also, I disabled power management in the Nvidia nforce networking controller driver.
I am now running XP SP2 with the latest Microsoft-supported drivers for video, sound, mouse, and wireless. The situation has improved, but is not completely resolved.
One other possible factor might be memory core dumps created for problem submission. I've had trouble with Outlook shutdowns lately, and thought memory issues arising from core dump activity might contribute. But recently the wireless has booted regardless of Outlook's status.
Since my last post, I have taken two additional actions: I disabled hibernation and system restore. It has been three days and I haven't had a problem. I'm inclined to think hibernation was the culprit; I was shocked to see system restore selected since I routinely disable it for security reasons.
My wireless stopped working 2 days before my warranty expired! Contacted support on Dec 8, it's now Jan 10, and I'm still being f***ed around by HP.
Tech Center was supposed to call me to arrange postage of notebook within 8 business hours! Since the 8 hours elapsed, I have been in contact with HP UK Customer Service. I have added headache of them using the 'bought outside UK excuse', so that if parts need replacing I have to post to someone in US, who will then send onto HP US! I lived in US for a year, while there I bought the notebook, moved back to Ireland, 4 months later the problem happens! People do reside in different countries nowadays!!
I'm currently waiting for ANOTHER callback from the Repair Center... this time from the Manager.
Three days or so after applying my last "fix," the issue resurfaced, but not as often.
I had noticed that my desktop icons loaded much more rapidly when the wireless failed to load than when it succeeded. After some on and off research, I learned that was related to a Windows setting called "prefetch," and that it was possible to use the registry to turn this feature off. The following article explains the procedure:
Doing this might impact boot times, but I'd still prefer one slow boot to three fast ones.
I was planning to wait until Monday to report this, but the activity here has prompted me to do so now.
PS: There is some discussion about emptying the ..\Prefetch folder. I have not done so, and do not recommend the procedure. I only advocate the registry tweak that article describes.
My wireless device also stopped working without warning. Poof. Hp Assistant is non responsive and wireless light remains orange, the switch has no effect. So many people with this problem and so many different responses and no true conclusions. I have tried some of the suggestions without success and it appears I will keep trying and hopefully like some of you will get a temporary fix. Someone previously mentioned dizzying I believe this is a drastic understatement. Never again HP. Never again will you get me.

I have this same problem with a dv6233se, have spent 9 months trying to sort this issue with HP and to be honest am not very happy with HP, I swapped out the broadcom wireless card from another HP machine and mine works fine in another machine while the other does not work in mine indicating a driver/vista problem. I have re-installed vista over 27 times now and the same problem occurs eventually, ie the card is initially detected then eventually and progressively disappears, failing to show up in device manager, frankly HP,s response to resolving this issue has been appalling to say the least, lastly insisting that I send the laptop back as the card is faulty when clearly I hav showed its not by swapping out the card, I will try some of the NEW solutions on here and re-post if I solve the problem, needless to say I or my family and company wont be buying another HP laptop, I bought a Gateway recently and its been as solid as a rock! NOT my experience with HP.
i realize that my laptop is a different model (tx1000), but the problem is curiously the same.
this is what i have posted on the forums before, perhaps it can be of some help:
issue: wifi hardware disappearing
HP Pavilion tx1000z CTO NB purchased march 9 2007 one year warranty july 28 2008 i unplugged the working laptop from power, carried it to another room, plugged it back into outlet and realized that wifi light switch in front is growing amber and that windows does not see wifi hardware
up until the incident i ran vista home premium sp1, current with all updates; bios F.1E; 2.00 A NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 Video Driver; Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 7.00 E; HP Wireless Assistant 3.00 I; NVIDIA nForce Chipset/Network Drivers 5.53 A; Essential System Updates for Microsoft Windows Vista 2.00.
last windows update - 7/25; nothing in the event log.
the laptop was in light use, mostly as email/music/multimedia/word processing for 3-4 hrs a day. it always was connected via wifi. the manual wifi trigger was almost never used.
when the problem happened, i did all the usual steps - reinstalled drivers, flashed bios, unpowered and removed battery, etc. only once the wifi came back up after power down, battery remove for 10 minutes, and then powering back on. no amount of tinkering could bring it back afterward.
booting into linux revealed the same thing - there is no wifi hardware. the wifi switch in front keeps glowing amber.
called support, case 801-427-6116. spent 1 hr 40 minutes; got escalated from frontline (shawn?) to tech support (?) to supervisor (michelle?). according to her, they have no known cases for tx1000, but they do have a known recall for dv6000. note however, that tx1000 is relatively new (i believe my model based on amd cpu became available a month before my purchase), so that if there is a problem that manifests itself 15 months after purchase, we would see the reports starting to trickle in right about now.
the supervisor could do nothing for me, except for usual 600+ for mobo sent to me or 300+ to send in for fixes. so i gave up.
i will order a replacement wifi card (part 407159-001) - $100 is the most i am willing to spend on this.
meanwhile i have purchased a usb wifi card and shop around for another laptop. this was my first brush with hp after 10+ laptops over the years with other manufacturers (i buy for myself, family, friends, and recommend to others), and unless hp does something to change my opinion, it will be the last for a while.
i think it is important to speak up and report this problem. besides knowledge sharing, we might stumble on a solution, and perhaps even convince HP that there is a systemic harware problem. call in if you can - they track the number of calls related to a problem, and hopefully once it reaches a certain threshold, they will be forced to act.
please post links to other posts discussing this. with enough concrete data we should be able to build a case and hold hp responsible.
Now this is my third day after I have reinstalled the graphics driver (nvidia) using the recovery tool and my wireless is working, which leaves me with the conclusion it was indeed the problem in case.
I have an HP Pavilion TX 1000. i purchased my laptop in summer 2007, and I started noticed the same issue with my wireless adapter, and I have done everything possible to fix it and notice exactly what has been posted. when I contacted HP support, they would not even talked to me because my warranty ran out, but i did the chat session with Marcos in HP assistant, he gave a whole procedure and it still did not help the problem, so i took matter into my own hand and start researching about the issue and I notice a lot of people was experiencing the same problem. I decided to call HP helpline again and try to come to a conclusion, but the person i spoke with told me that there is nothing they can do about it even though it seem like it is a common problem of the HP pavilion model and others.
I have had the same problem with my new laptop Dv6-1205ee, first time when i got the problem System restore gave a fix. Next time it didnt help. I opened the Help & Support -> Troubleshooting tools -> Home network center -> there i had an option to enable the wireless which i did and it started working fine.
