I too have a vertical line on laptop screen. The color is pink. About one third in from the left side of screen. Called support this evening and was told my warranty has expired and if I wanted another one year warranty for $99.00. I told this person on the line that if hp could correct the problem then I would agree. He said yes. He then processed the new 1 year warranty and then transfered me to technical support, only to find out that my laptop would cost $400.00 to fix and said that he would credit me the $99.00 if I agree to have it fixed. I refused and said that I will not agree to spend $400.00 and that I do not want the $99.00 warranty. He would not credit me the $99.00 because that is for phone support only. Now I'm waiting for his supervisor to call me back. I'm very disappointed with HP. I purchased this laptop October 30, 2005 and just purchased another hp laptop about a month ago. What a mistake that was. A company as big as HP shouly be ashamed of themselves to sell computers that breakdown and ask for $400.00 more to get it fixed.

Dont bother to look elsewhere on this forum for this problem as HP refuses to acknowledge there is a problem with the laptop overheating and causing vertical lines on the screen. The heat is so intense from this laptop and the air circulation so poor that it fries the video card embedded on the laptop.
How do I know all this? There were multiple pages of postings with hundreds of users banning together to sue HP and calling on the better business bureau to look into this problem but HP DELETED the postings so that they wont have to be held liable. I will NEVER stop posting until HP fixes my laptop for free. I hope they get sued just like dell for crappy customer service and ignoring problems that customers have with there products. |

I didn't realise HP had deleted some forum threads - I had saved some to my Favourites which have disappeared.
I have a ZD8060US which has developed the vertical lines. I bought it in early 2005 and the first line appeared just after my 1 year warranty expired, same as for most people.
Though I have a US model, I live in the UK, where HP support today denied having any 'Alerts' for this model. During my very expensive support call (premium rate number) I was told I could pay to repair it or buy a new one at a 'discount' as a 'Privileged Customer'.
This was actually just a 100 GBPound discount on a standard laptop.
I am hoping to find other people in the UK who can help to support some action regarding this.
I did a web-search and found this thread (which I was hoping to reply to!): http://www.mvpicton.co.uk/cache/IT%20Resource%20Center%20forums%20-%20HP%20Pavilion%20zd8000%20display.htm |

I developed the vertical line problem in August, one month after my warranty ended. I called HP Tech and they said it was a simple problem with my settings and then told me I needed to get it to a service center and pay out of my own pocket if the things they told me didn't work, which was obviously the case. At this point there is little of my monitor that I can see. The thin vertical lines that filled my screen continued to get worse until large white bands filled with multiple colors started taking out 2.5" sections of my screen. I have to have an external monitor hooked up to use it. |

Hi Everyone,
â¦and here was me thinking I was alone!!! My story is similar to everyone elseâs⦠one week after my then top-of-the-range $2000 zd8000âs one year warranty went out, (July 2006), a green line appeared down the left-hand side of the screen. I called HP and went through living hell, over three months, and three continents of customer service (judging from the accents - US, India & Indonesia) and an eventual phone bill of over $120 just to get told my warranty was out of date and they want $800 to fix itâ¦
At the time I was desperately ill and had just come out of hospital⦠HP put me through such a hell all for one week when Iâd been in medical care due to UN service!
One year later I now have about 30 lines on my screen, my laptop is burning hot and as from today I have a nice pale patch down the middle of the screen.
I saved desperately for this machine and still need it.
The zd8000 is obviously defective and HP know about it but will not admit liability due to the cost of replacing all out models. Note the removal of the threads on their website and denials from customer service.
Best wishes to you all!

Thanks guys for the awesome information. I think my ZD8000 laptop might had vertical line problems.
Anyway, my real reason here is that after 3 years my ZD8000 laptop just burnout and won't startup anymore. What's so puzzling is that I only use it once or maybe twice a month for two hours. Now after reading all the complaints on here about that same laptop, I'm thinking it had to be defective.
I can't afford to have ir repair at the high prices HP charging. If anyone hear or know about people with a defective ZD8000 laptop taking . |

Now up to 7 lines.
Each time I plug in an external monitor it reminds me of why HP is no longer on my business / personal supplier list!
Whilst I understand the rational for extended warranties I am clear that these screens are not 'Fit for purpose'
=========================================== Correction to post Sep 22, 2007 15:08:23 GMT
Problem first was first seen in Sept 2006 and I contacted HP on 5 December 2006 (not 2005 as incorrectly stated)

In this moment, I have more than 40 lines in my zd8080us display. Cool, hu?
To help HP in the identification of the problem and to help other customers in avoiding buying this product, a YouTube video has been produced and uploaded. It can be seen in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbL_zSXfuXA
As a way to pressure HP, it can be a good idea to create tons of videos like this, or this one to be watched over and over so raising its ranking and popularity⦠eventually this can become a problem to HP Public Relations and they will feel that something should be done besides deleting the forumsâ¦
Thanks. |

Yes like thousands of others I too own a HP Pavillion zd8000 purchased in 2005 in Australia. Have just developed the pink vertical line. Have contacted HP Australia and was refered to Indian Speaking man at helpdesk, obviously offshore. All he could tell me was that I had a problem with motherboard and it needed to be replaced, advised me to get it done in Adelaides only HP certified maintainer who advised yes known problem will replace motherboard for $800 after another $55 diagnosis fee. it is obviously not an isolated issue with all you other people having the same issues. Come on HP stand by the product you sell and the name you wish to uphold. Your customer service and reliability is unacceptable, for your products to fail like this just outside warranty. Your product is definitely "not fit for use" in its current state. I'll certainly not buy or recommend HP again to anyone. You got our cash and blew us off....well done. Wont look to good in the long term though will it? |

Hi, I am from Italy, i read the forums of the problem on the lcd monitor of notebook Hp and i have the same problem! I created a forum to do a "class action" , because a lot of persons in Italy have the same problem. The site of the forum is http://petizionecontrohp.forumfree.net/ We are a lot of persons. We will go to an important italy tv program to speak of the Hp problems. Sorry for the little English. See you soon. Thank you. Chiara Conti chiaramaria1@interfree.it |

I bought my zd8000 in the UK over 2 years ago and the vertical lines have been appearing over the last year. I've got 25 lines on my screen at the moment of varying colours and another one appears almost every couple of weeks! I'm glad to see I'm not the only person with this problem. I work in precurement for a large multinational company that currently uses a large proportion of HP desktops that are regularly upgraded. At present, in light of the extremely poor customer service experienced by myself and other posters here I do not intend to recommend we continue to use HP for this and we are currently investigating other desktop providers. HP need to sort this issue out before they lose significant business contracts which sadly appear to mean more to them than their public image. |

Well, I have the same problem with my Hp Pavilion zd8000. Four vertical lines have appeared in less than two weeks. After reading all of these posts, I am certain HP will do nothing about this problem. I bought this laptop after losing everything I owned in Katrina...so it has not lasted three years...I am sick about this and have no plans to purchase another HP. I agree HP should be ashamed and in the long run will feel the impact of the way they are handling this situation and their customers. |

I am currently using a monitor when I use this machine.
Latest state of the screen is 12 narrow lines, one 3" shaded bar on the extreme left, and, one 3" mauve shaded flickering area centre screen, all running from top to bottom.
None of my exteranl screens are HP, or for that matter, ever will be. My replacement machine, which is a desktop, (at least I can throw away or easily replace any defective bits!!) is a Dell.
Suggest everyone with the same problem just bites the bullet and buys from Dell. Most certainly should not be from HP.
Interesingly at home I have two HP printers (one laser, one deskjet) under 1 half years old which I am happy with - I also have a Scanjet scanner which had the lid replaced shortly after purchase (another 'NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE').
It is good to know that we are playing a part in the HP quality improvement programme
**!!!!** at least we are funding it!!
Best wishes - wont be using this site again - bored with HP |

I have a ZD 8333cl:
Just wanted you to know, I saw a post somewhere that one person turned off the VPU Recover in the ATI Control Panel.
I had a blue line going down the left side about one inch from the edge. I unchecked the 'Enable VPU Recover'. I then turned off the computer (see fyi:) and let it sit until the next day. When I turned it on the line was not there. It has stayed away so far.
fyi: I just wanted to let you know the only other thing I did was rather than turning it off, I unplugged the power brick and let the battery run down. I did this to drain the battery because it is always on AC power. I do not think this had any thing to do with the fix though. Just wanted you to know. |

I had two vertical lines show up on my 17" monitor as well--about a year ago. I was still within my protection plan I bought when I paid for the computer at Circuit City, and I ended up mailing my laptop to a company called Strategic Service Solutions, Inc. in Fort Worth, TX. They fixed the problem and mailed it back to me, no worries. Until about a year later. No kidding, almost a year to the date I got the repaired thing back, suddenly my screen was COVERED with small vertical lines all over the screen, each line about 1-2 millimeters in height and in bunches of about 1" wide--ALL OVER THE SCREEN. Go figure, now my warranty is expired, I took it to Best Buy to have a computer diagnostics run ($59) and they came back that my video memory on the motherboard is bad. Probably because of the heat, like some of you have already mentioned? And now I'm getting the same answer, that I have to replace the motherboard ($700) because the ATI graphics card is integrated into it. Pricey, and hard to believe that, for the money I paid almost exactly 3 years ago, the graphics card can't last any longer than that? Needless to say, I'm concerned that I've bought a $2000 piece of junk and will just have to eat the price of a new one....... Someone mentioned using a different monitor--don't think that would work for this issue, any thoughts? |

I have a HP Pavilion purchased in 2006 and the video failed after less than one year with lines; system board replaced, now about 13 months later (4/2008) vertical line(s) starting up, similar to everyone else on this forum.
HP Total Care was Total , chat techs, and uncaring case manager (Jean Mourre 877 917 4380 x94), though she was at least somewhat civil.
Making her aware of the problem, even with Dell resolution (warranty up to 3 years on this problem and refund of any monies already spent on it) for their similar problem on their 17" laptops left me with nothing. She didn't feel it was unreasonable to have an expensive laptop fail after only one year, and the repair to fail a year after that.
Since she didn't seem to think there was a problem since HP won't admit to it, giving her a call would perhaps help her to realize it IS a problem with numerous ex-customers! Then, perhaps, someone further up the food chain may take this problem more seriously.
Only resolution offered was $800 repair to a $2000 computer. A computer should last longer than one year, and repair should last longer than a year. This is obviously a design flaw, any repair would probably only last another year throwing more good money after bad. |

I too have a HP Pavilian zd8000 which was custom ordered loaded with everything the same time as your purchase..I have it in a dry location, no sunlight and it is not opened and shut or moved..It has never been dropped and is cared for with kid gloves. Several days ago my computer developed in the same spot a white/blue line one third of the way from the left...then two days later over another three quarters of an inch a red line has developed. Considering this computer does not get over used, abused etc and is in like new condition I cannot believe this has happened. I too called and they immediately wanted me to ship it in...telling me cost would probably be from 200. to $600. This is obviously a design or assembly error and it will only happen again...I had just purchased a second HP laptop too...and now I regret totally this purchase.....I have referred so many people to HP...and have been a life long client...I am going to write to them and if I get no assistance I will make it a point to tell everyone I meet...as I assist seniors with computer help and write for the Miniature Horse World and have my own Art Studio, I cannot stand unfairness and dollars are not easy to come by today that they can be thrown away like this to support some CEO's bonus.....Carolyn M. of millersequine |

At least you guys can see your screen. When mine boots up I get the Win XP loading screen then when Win XP should be loaded the screen is black. If I reload XP it will work until I load the video drivers. HP wants me to send it in and have it fixed for $400. I have a HP desktop as well. I'm afraid of what's going to happen to my desktop since the warranty is almost over for it. |

Same thing as everyone else! We got screwed when it comes to this laptop. Mine messed up before the warranty expired. It was the battery heating up that would shut down the computer. It was not until I warned that if my house would burn down that this decided they fix it! Supposedly they fixed, but then I also got those verticle lines. Within time almost the whole screen! I called them and they told me it would cost me 300 to fix the problem. |

I have the same problem with my Pavilion ZD 8125US.
First it was the dim Card: Cost me $150 to replace.
Later the Batery Pack was recalled: Fortunately HP send me a new one for free.
4 Months ago the screen began showing nasty vertical lines, getting up to 15 and increasing. Today the laptop wont starp up remaining in black, only to respond if I work on VGA mode.I reinstalled the operating system two times and when I got to the step of installing CD drivers the Laptop collapse and its imposible to star up. |

I have many problems with my Pavilion ZD 8000 since I bought it in 2005
Pavilion ZD 8000 (8125US) Overheating problems, battery pack overheating problems with masive recall, display problems with vertical lines, etc, etc. 6 Months ago the screen began showing nasty vertical lines, getting up to 15 and increasing. Today the laptop wonât star up remaining in black. The laptop only responds if I select to work on VGA mode. I reinstalled the operating system two times, and when I got to the step of installing HP CD drivers then Laptop collapses , and its impossible to star up.
A little History: Just one month after warranty ended: my Dim Memory Card need to be replaced: It Cost me around $150.(Technicians told me that the cause was the heat inside the computer due inadequate ventilation system of the laptop)
After that, the battery pack was heating up the system so high that the keyboard was almost impossible to work with. Searching on the Internet I discovered that keyboard failure was caused by using a defective battery pack and they recommend users to pull out the battery pack and work with out it. Four months later, and searching on the Internet, I found that my battery pack was recalled. Fortunately HP sent me a new one for free.
4 Months Later , the screen was failing very bad with vertical lines increasing daily
Since year 1999 I have owned 2 other laptops( Not HP) before this Pavilion, and both are running well and never presented any problem at all. Always my purchase decision was pointed to get the top of the line laptop of any brand, and that was the case with my defective Pavilion ZD 8000 (8215US).To buy this laptop I spent in 2005 almost $1500 and it was a considerable amount of money compared with other alternatives in the same category of home media laptops.
This Pavilion ZD 8000 represents my worst experience ever in technology, and I consider that HP did many mistakes, in the process of manufacture that should consider recall them in order to fix the high amount of complains that exists all over the world with this laptop.
What positive technical knowledge could anybody ask or share with that amount massive of failures with this Pavilion ZD8215US ???
HP should check all complains that exist in the web about this laptop HP does not want to be responsible for bad design and manufacture of the evident failure in the manufacture of this computer. HP should recall all defective ZD 8000 |

Brother, I couldn't agree more about HP recalling all of these computers.
I still have my system --I can't even get past the log on screen because it goes completely white and is unusable after about a minute after turning the thing on. HP tells me that it's my graphics card, which was built into the motherboard and got too hot, and for a mere $700 they'll fix it for me!!! For that money I can get a better laptop with more memory, RAM, better graphics, etc. etc. etc. Why would I pay that much for that will overheat and burn up again? But like I said, HP is too big a business to do the right thing and either completely recall or make good on their product! |

Here in HP forums lets try to participate in all complains of ZD 8000 laptops.
We did spend a lot of money for this laptops and its obvious for the amount of complains in Internet and HP must take action and be responsible for all this defectives computers.
Its no fare that this expensive and top of the line laptop fails so bad and so soon.It is not a solution for me to waste in repairs more money that it could possible cost a new one and trying to fix a laptop that it is going to fail again due defective HP design. |

I also have a vertical line on laptop screen: the color is white, and I too was told it would cost $400.00 to fix it. I paid $2000.00 for the zd8230us computer in 2005. When I requested the LCD screen part number I was told they no longer have an LCD for this model. |

I found a great company on the web to fix my HP zd8000. It is http://laptopgeniuses.com. They charge $179.00 for an LCD replacement. I got my laptop back and it looked great! Hope this helps, it's not a free fix but a cheaper alternative than the HP one. It is a great notebook, hopefully I can get a few more years out of it. |
