I turned of hp cue in services.msc I downloaded and ran Printer diagnostic software and all checkmarks in all catagories green. Scans from "Windows camera & scanner wizard". Prints, copies; files , documents and photos. Try to scan documents or photos I get HP Cue-Scanning flow component encounter error. Under details, I get hpqkygrp.exe vers 000008aa0 msver 80.dll If I use the hp solution center.
I notice this problem thru out the forums. I initially had errors with unit not found. After multiple attempts by hp support from removing all files, and reinstalling about a dozen times with no success. I reformated and reinstalled all software. I was able to access everything HP. But now get this error. HELP VERY FRUSTRATED and soon to be ex loyal hp user. I have been a loyal hp user for over 10 yrs.

I just bought a HPC7280 and installed the software, but it fails with the same error:HP Cue-Scanning Flow Component then under details:hpqkygrp.exe 1384 Then thiers something about Visual tools debugging just-in-time. The error keeps popping up, its very aggervating!!! I just sent in my HPC6280 in to the warrenty for having so many problems with it, now this on a model up. Please help or returning this printer too!!!

Mine is working fine now. I installed all the updates, didn't work. I unpluged the printer from the mains and then pluged it back in and now its fine...go figure. This resolved the error on multiple PC's that were connected to it, which included wired and wireless.

Try it and see.

It didn't work, when I plugged it back in the error comes back. It's nonstop, it just keeps popping up. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the HP software 4 times now. The printer works & prints, but my computer doesn't see the scanner or can't find it. I need the HP Cue-Scanning flow component to download correctlly, I don't understand whats causing the error to come up and keep it from downloading. When I click on debugging the error, the same hpqkygrp.exe keeps coming up, and something about debugging just-in-time in visual tools. This is so upsetting :(

I have the same problem trying to scan using the C6280. When I use the HP Solution Center, click Scan Document, I get the error "HP CUE Scanning Flow Component has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Clicking "Details" (and/or looking in the EventLog)shows the error is caused by "hpqkygrp.exe" when it executes "msvcr80.dll".

Like the original poster, after 6 attempts with HP Support get the PC to recognize the C6280 on the network (stripping and reloading HP's software), I finally rebuilt the PC from the ground up (XP Pro, SP2).

Now I can see the C6280, and I can scan from other applications, but not from the HP Solution Center (which is the only application that uses "hpqkygrp.exe").

One thing I am going to explore ... using Google I've found that similar crashes of "msvcr80.dll" are related to Adobe "photo" tools (Photoshop, PhotoDeluxe), and searching HP Support for "hpqkygrp.exe" errors says to remove any Kodak photo software. So ... I'm going to remove all photo software and see if it helps.

I found what was causing my errors. I have a registry cleaner. It was removing files that had hp in the desciption as programs not in use or missing. I restored everything that had hp in the description and everything started working. I changed utilities and the same thing happened again. So check and make sure none of your utilities are deleting these files mistakenly.

I found my problem as well ... something is wrong with HP's code. I uninstalled the Adobe and Kodak photo programs, and I uninstalled the HP C6200 using HP's special batch files on the CD - (\util\ccc\Uninstall_L4.bat). The Level 4 batch file nukes everything and cleans the registry.

I found that if I install the Adobe and Kodak photo programs first, then the HP 6200 crashes with the error "HP CUE Scanning Flow Component has encountered a problem and needs to close."

If I install the HP 6200 first, then I can't install the Adobe/Kodak programs; InstallShield hangs. However, if I go into XP's "Services", and stop the HP Services ("HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service", "HP Network Devices Support", and "hpqcxs08"), then InstallShield works again and I can install the Adobe/Kodak photo programs.

SUMMARY: everything works if I install the HP 6200 first, turn off the SERVICES that HP starts, and then install my other photo programs.

It seems the HP imaging software really breaks if you use any photo programs except theirs. What a way to establish a monopoly ... make sure that user's can't run software from competitors that make cameras and printers!

Sorry to repost, but here is a little more clarity on my previous post, solving the problem with the Scanning Flow Component error.

My problem was when I use the HP Solution Center, and click "Scan a Document", I get an error window that says "HP-CUE" needs to close. When I click the "details" link, it says hpqkygrp.exe caused the problem when it called msvcr80.dll. Removing and reinstalling the HP software 6 times, and finally rebuilding XP, still didn't help.

I used Google to research "msvcr80.dll" problems, and noticed some similarities ... it is used by other photo/imaging applications. Here is what I discovered that fixed my HP Scanner problems.

1- Removed the entire HP suite; C6280 drivers and all related HP programs
2- Removed Kodak photo programs
3- Removed Adobe Photoshop
(you may have to remove photo/imaging applications from other vendors, these are the only 2 I had loaded here)
4- Installed the HP C6280 suite
(more of the solution follows)

It now works perfectly. But once the HP software is installed, I couldn't reinstall either Kodak or Adobe photo software. Both use InstallShield and their installation would hang; Process Explorer (MS SystemInternals) showed that "ntvdm.dll" was hung(a subprocess of the installation). To fix this problem I found I had to temporarily stop the Services that HP starts.

5- Go into "Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services"
6- Stop "HP Cue DeviceDiscovery" service
7- Stop "HP Network Devices Support" service
8- Stop "hpqcsx08" service
9- Installed Kodak and Photoshop
10- Restarted the above HP services

They have all been working for a week now.

Sigh! I take it all back. I am still getting the HP-CUE crash, that says the module hpqkygrp.exe is faulting. I am no longer running Adobe or Kodak photo software. My earlier "fixes" worked for awhile (a week?), but today, all 3 of my computers can't scan; when I try to scan from HP Solution Center, all 3 computers display the HP-CUE error message. HP is sending me a new C6280 to see if that fixes it.

I tried unplugging the AC Power as Mark suggested, and it didn't help. Like bwt777, I use a registry cleaner ... I'll try a reinstall, then see if my registry cleaner is the cause; thanks for that hint bwt777!

OK, I FINALLY FOUND THE PROBLEM AND THE FIX. Thanks to bwt777 for suggesting it was a registry cleaner issue. It was, and I found a work around. The problem is HP is creating an invalid registry entry, but if you remove it, as your registry cleaner will, the HP CUE software crashes. HP now has this same fix information, but it'll probably be 6 months before they release a fix (if ever).

If you want the fix, read the very end. The beginning here documents the problem.

HP Scanner Software Problem

CIRCUMSTANCES to cause error:
Run HP Solution Center
Click on Scan Document or Scan Picture
Error window pops up; scan software aborts

ERROR MESSAGE:
HP CUE Scanning Flow Component has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE:
HP software installation creates a bad registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging

Key = ProfileWritePath

Value = %APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination

This value is in error; it indicates the HP CUE profile is written in the USERs application data path. The registry variable %APPDATA% typically resolves to

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data

Therefore, the installation software says the HP CUE profile can be found in

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination

However, the actual path where the HP CUE profile is being written is:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination

In other words, the HP CUE profile is not being written to the %APPDATA% path, but is instead being written to the
%ALLUSERSPROFILE% path.

The HP software works as installed, until the user runs a Registry Cleaner program. Registry cleaner programs detect that the path specified by HP is an Invalid Path and removes the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging\ProfileWritePath

If this key is missing from your registry, this is your problem.

When this key is deleted from the registry, scanning fails and the HP CUE error message occurs. Replacing the key allows scanning to work again.

The bad Key Value created by HP cannot be corrected by the user. If you change the erroneous value, to a valid path, the scanner fails and the same HP CUE error message occurs:
-   You cannot replace %APPDATA%
with %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data
-   You cannot replace %APPDATA%
with C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

Any changes to correct the erroneous value apparently cause HP CUE to blow up.

WORK AROUND:
Since you cannot fix the HP software bug, you must fool the Registry Cleaner so that it does not remove this invalid HP registry entry.

First, you must recreate the original HP registry entry if it is missing. In the registry:
-   go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging
-   create a new key (String Value); name it ProfileWritePath
-   set the value of this new key to
%APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination

For each user who will logon to the computer, you must go their personal Application Data directory, and create the HP CUE sub-directories that are missing; the registry cleaner will then see that the HP registry entry is pointing to a valid path, and not remove the HP registry entry.

For example, you must create this folder path for each user of the computer:

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination

You don't need to add any files to the end directory, it can be left empty.

The support "techs" for HP follow their scripts pretty tightly. The thrid time they suggested re-installing software I told them only if a level 2 tech was on line.....welllll it took so much time for a level 2 tech to even answer the question ( never actually did get on line) I found the thread using Google. Thanks for the excellent post - solved my issue in 30 minutes after 5.5 hours on on phone time with HP.

I eventually called back 9in and taled to a supervisor so the case could be closed and hopefully this info will be shared with the level 1 staff to save some otheres having this issue some valuable time.

Not smart enough to know how to do this fix. Can someone explain step by step please.....

PRINT THIS OUT SO YOU CAN FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS
===================================================
- Go to Start Menu
- Right click on My Computer and select Explore
- In the Explorer window that opens, on the right side, double click on C Drive
- On the right side, double click on Documents and Settings
- On the right side, double click on your personal folder ... the folder that has your login name on it
- On the right side, double click on the folder Application Data
- On the right side, right click in an empty area, select NEW, then select FOLDER. When the new folder appears, name it HP. Now double click on the folder HP
- On the right side, right click in an empty area, select NEW, then select FOLDER. When the new folder appears, name it "Digital Imaging" (without the quotation marks). Now double click on the folder Digital Imaging
- On the right side, right click in an empty area, select NEW, then select FOLDER. When the new folder appears, name it Data. Now double click on the folder Data
- On the right side, right click in an empty area, select NEW, then select FOLDER. When the new folder appears, name it Destination. Now double click on the folder Destination

Now you are going to edit your registry ... BE CAREFUL ... if you mess up your registry you will have to rebuild your computer.
- Go to Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, and select "Command Prompt"
- In the black Command Prompt window that opens, type  regedit and hit enter
- In the Registry Editor window that opens, in the left side, go the very top and double click on My Computer
- Below that, double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- Below that, double click on Software
- Below that, double click on Hewlett-Packard (you may have to scroll down to find it)
- Below that, double click on DigitalImaging  (you may have to scroll down to find it)
- Double check that you are in the correct place; at the very bottom of this Registry Editor window, in the border of the window, it should say
"My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging"
- Now move to the right window. Right click in an empty area of the right window and select NEW, then select STRING VALUE; when the new String Value is created, it will be highlighted and named "New Value #1" ... type this new name instead    ProfileWritePath  (retain the upper and lower case characters) and hit enter
- Now double click on this new key that you named ProfileWritePath
- A window will open, and in the white box labeled "Value data:" enter this
%APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
- Make sure you enter it exactly as I have shown it above
- Click on ok
- Close all the windows we opened ... you are done.
- You should now reboot so that all the HP programs restart themselves

Thanks for the feedback David, I'm glad to hear this fixed the problem.

It's sad that HP refuses to support the products it turns out. I worked for them for years, and they pour their money into new products and refuse to provide a mechanism for customers to obtain support ... but that's because the division managers refuse to put funds into support.

Steve,

Are the steps for XP? If so, can you post how to make the changes for Vista? I have tried following your steps but things don't match up.

I have been online with HP 6 different times w/o getting this problem resolved. It sounds like you have it all figured out.

Thank you in advance!

Sam,

Yes, these steps are for XP; I don't have access to Vista, so I can't convert these instructions to Vista for you.

However ... this is a known problem, and we know it is caused by a bug in the HP software ... therefore it is HP's responsibility to fix the problem for you ...
I would call HP, tell them it is a known problem, and DEMAND to speak to a supervisor. Tell the supervisor the fix is here on the HP forum, but it is for XP, and you need them to convert it to Vista for you. The supervisor has software techs on staff who can easily convert these instructions.

Don't let HP sneak out of helping you; we have found both the problem, and the solution, for them and now it is up to them to do what they are being paid to do. Seriously, if they don't want to finish this fix for you, then tell the supervisor you want to speak to a Manager ... it is all part of their documented escalation process and someone up the line will own the responsiblity.

I have not called HP yet, but I did find out how to make your changes with Vista. I had to unhide all files & folders for the App Data folder to show up. With that being said do you think I can make your changes? I have walked thru your instructions w/o making changes and it all makes sense.

Sam,

You should be able to make the exact same changes to Vista that I documented for XP. Both your personal files, and the registry, should be identical as regards to these changes ... Vista should not be any different than XP ... which is what threw me when you asked me to give you instructions for Vista.

In any case, these changes would not do any damage ... as long as you are CAREFUL when you edit the registry ... a mistake there can wipe your system out :-(

I've tried the solution as well and it didn't work for me. somebody please tell me that I don't have to reinstall the OS just to get the damn printer to work!!!!
Steve Jumonville
Oct 23, 2008 22:51:08 GMT    Unassigned

I certainly wouldn't reinstall the OS. HP can lead you through doing a complete uninstall of their code, and then a reinstall of their code. If your problem is the same as the rest of us, it will work fine until you run a registry cleaner program, at which point it will break again.

If you have never run a registry cleaner, then your problem is not the same one the rest of us are seeing here. If you have run a registry cleaner, and this problem showed up, then my fix should actually work for you.

Steve...thanks for the quick response. I've spent literally 8 plus hours and am at the point where I should just return the POS. :( If it matters I'm running a Dell Inspiron series laptop Windows XP SP3. I had never run a registry cleaner before but did run one after uninstalling the software and then reinstalling. Everything works except scanning. I got in touch with HP via chat and they are giving out your solution to the problem. Any ideas?
Steve Jumonville
Oct 24, 2008 05:47:35 GMT    Unassigned

I'm afraid I don't have any wonderful ideas. I'm going to assume that your scanning, like the rest of us, worked at least once, when you first installed it. For the rest of us that is what happened ... and then one day it mysteriously started giving us errors. My discovery showed that, for the rest of us, it was due to an HP error, that was exposed when we used a registry cleaner.

If yours didn't ever work, then I'd suggest you ask HP for your money back. If it ever worked, even once, the following process is worth trying.

- Unplug the printer from your PC (USB) or network, and turn it off
- Insert the HP CD. Go to START MENU, and right click on My Computer, and select EXPLORE
- In the window that appears, in the right pane, double click on your CD drive
- In the right pane, double click on the folder labeled "util"
- In the right pane, double click on the folder labeled "ccc"
- In the right pane, double click on the icon labeled "Uninstall_L4.bat"

"Level 4" of this uninstall program removes EVERYTHING that this HP CD put on your system. It takes a long time, and will prompt you many times.

- When it is finally done, it will ask you to reboot. If it doesn't ask, please reboot anyway ... just make sure it tells you it is completely done before you reboot.
- When your system has rebooted, if you have a registry cleaner program, run it ... run it at least 2 or 3 times (each time you run it, it will likely find additional things to remove).
- reboot your computer again

OK, the computer is clean and should have none of this HP code left on it. Do a fresh install, using the HP CD, and don't plug in and turn on your printer until the HP CD asks you to.

Scanning should work on a fresh install ... it has for the rest of us. And it should continue to work until such a time as you run a registry cleaner. If that happens, then follow my earlier instructions and scanning will continue to work even if you run a registry cleaner.

The bottom line is your scanner should work with this fresh install, or with the first install you did days ago, and the only thing I've found that will break it is cleaning the registry.

Ooops ... I lied. Somewhere in this forum (Google it) I also posted a message awhile back regarding the fact that it won't work if you install Kodak picture software or Adobe PhotoDeluxe picture software. It turns out HP has known about that bug since 2004 and still hasn't fixed it. Their fix is remove and don't use Kodak picture software.

Hi Steve, I tried the L4 uninstall and did the reboot and registry clean then reboot and reinstall. I have an unexpected internal error has occurred when I try to scan with the officejet 6310. Unlike you guys I've never successfully scanned.
Steve Jumonville
Oct 24, 2008 16:28:22 GMT    Unassigned

Jermaine, since your scanner has never worked, and the error message is different, then the fix I posted isn't going to work. To fix the problem we have to understand what the internal error is.

When you try to scan, and the system reports an internal error, it should pop up an error window. With luck, that window says it wants to send the data about the error to HP or Microsoft, and includes buttons saying "send error report" and "don't send". If this is the case, just above the buttons there is a link that says "To see what data this error report contains, click here". You need to click the link to see the error data ... to see what is causing the error. When you click that link, a new window will pop up ... and at the top of it you will see the words "Error Signature", followed by 5 pieces of data. In my case the data is:
- AppName: hpqkygrp.exe
- AppVer: 10.0.0.573
- ModName: msvcr80.dll
- ModVer: 8.0.50727.1433
- Offset: 00008aa0

This data tells you and HP which piece of software is causing the crash ... and knowing which module is crashing may (or may not) give us insight into what the heck is going on. In my case, I used this data to search Google, locate this forum, and eventually find a fix.

If you can find the data above for your crash, it may point us to the cause and a fix (it's a long shot). More likely, since HP's code will work on a clean/new system, and it has never worked on your system, you may end up having to reinstall/repair your OS. What OS are you running (XP?) and what version (Home/Professional?) and what Service Pack (2? 3?).

I've re-installed the program more times then I can count. I followed Steve's detailed instructions by changing the Value Data. I've un-installed RegCure & Adobe Photoshop before re-installing the HP Software. I've spent hours on the phone with HP support. NOTHING.... If this is a known problem with HP, why no bad press or reviews? Can anyone out there really help????? HP needs to stand behind their products! Thanks

If HP supported AIO users, it would be the first time for them. They consider their printers "throw-away" products, and are only interested in selling cartridges.

The only way to get HP to support their printers would be to get a commitment from the VP of this division to devote some of their engineering resources to cleaning up the bad code they generate.

HP used to make sure they turned out good code, back in the 80's, by making the development engineers support their code. Not wanting to do support for a living, this was a good incentive to make them produce a quality product.

All other things being equal, HP has the worst record for software support (releasing bug fixes) of any manufacturer of electronics equipment. I worked in HP sales for 7 years, and it was always the #1 complaint of my customers.

Jim,

I wish there was something we could do differently ... but I don't know what it would be. HP doesn't even put enough money into support, nor do they believe in supporting their installed base enough, to assign one of their thousands of engineers to monitor their own forums (this site).

Most companies realize it costs 10x more to buy a customer back than to retain an existing customer. HP's lack of interest in supporting their installed base shows that HP's Marketing people are asleep on the job ... they are the ones who should be carrying our issues to the Division GM.

Good luck on your next printer ... there are plenty of HP competitors who would love your business.

Jim,

Re-read my last post.

With a fresh and full installation of the software...

Save the registry entries as outlined in the included pic's of my last post.

I did. My C7280 works flawlessly.

Jerry

I un-installed all HP software following Steve's instructions. I then cleaned up the PC with Regcure, making sure to ignore all HP errors. I then un-installed Regcure and re-installed HP software. So far the scanner is working but I still haven't re-installed Regcure. Do I need a registry repair program? It seems to screw with HP software. I'll let you know if the printer comes up with the Cue Flow problem again.

Thanks Jerry & Steve

Jim,

Your Registry cleaner will help to keep your PC running optimally. Do as you suggested. Set your Registry cleaner to ignore the HP entries it finds. All should be well at that point.

Hi Jerry & Steve:

All is well with the C7280 except for one little problem... It sends the image to the file I put the scan into but I get an error messege of "Internal DRS Error 1500:c0:3001" as the scan is being processed to the folder.
Any suggestions on how to fix this????

Try sending your scans to "My Documents".

Thanks for getting back to me so quick!

I send all my scans to a folder in My Documents labeled "MY SCANS". So what I did was make a new folder and scanned into that folder. Same error messege. I then scanned just into My Documents, no folder, and got the same error messege.

The error messege comes up 3 times during the processing procedure. Each time I click on OK it re-appears until the 3rd time, then the scan goes thru and the scanner resets itself. The scans are being processed but this error messege just keeps popping up.

Any other suggestions?

Jim,

As you know, diagnosing and solving problems this way is more guess work than anything else. If I had your computer in front of me. I could probably fix it up lickity split. I know what I would do when uninstalling/reinstalling software on my system. 1)go to Add/Remove Programs: Remove all HP Software. 2)Manually search for/remove all HP program files. 3)Run my Registry cleaner. 4)ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING:Manually search the registry via Control F function for any remaining HP registry entries. 5)Defragment/re-install/run reg. cleaner/carefully analyze and save appropriate registry keys(see my pic's for what to definitely save). 6)Defrag. again 7) Test run HP Solution Center again.

I hope you get it figured out,

I agree with Jerry's process, that's what I do as well.

One other thing I would try ... if you have a full backup of your PC ... is try a clean reinstall of XP, update to current patch level, then install the HP as the only program. See if it still has errors. If no errors, then it tells me something is corrupt in your current install and I'd just start there and reinstall all your applications.

If it has the same errors on a clean install, then I'd throw the HP out. I doubt that would happen ... although we all have had problems, we are all running successfully now. It sounds to me like you have some corruption in your current installation that none of the rest of us has ... and the only way I could imagine fixing that is to reinstall XP (sigh!).

If you end up doing that, at that point I'd sure run a full backup ... I use Acronis Home and love it.

Here's what I wrote previously....

Steve,

Your suggestion dated Jul 4, 2008 08:17:06 GMT worked in all but one respect. WinAso Registry Optimizer 4.0.5 was not fooled.

When run, WinAso specified two errors.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee76/Kojak58/ScreenShot009.jpg

My Solution:

I unchecked each error.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee76/Kojak58/ScreenShot010.jpg

Then selected ignore forever.

In relation to Steve's post back in October regarding HP scanner fix.

Hi Steve! First , a big thank you for the registry fix. Instantaneous solution. Well done! However , I do have another related problem regarding the " application data " file. I am inserting a segment of your solution message you posted:

The problem is...I don't HAVE an application Data folder. Have you any thoughts as to how I should proceed? Or do I have to edit the registry every time I use my Reg cleaner?

Looking forward to your response! Thanks!

Laine, what operating system are you using. The above information is exceptional. However, if you are using a different operating system, or service pack level, there may be some registry differences. Let us know and we'll be glad to give you the adjusted directions. I think HP should provide support for their products. I know that's alot to ask from them. I have a OJ Pro L7780 as well as 4 laptops & 2 desktops. We run Vista Home Pro as well as 2 versions of XP Pro SP3.

Wayne, you are not alone. I just sat and read this entire string, and thinking I had at long last found the answer, went to make the suggested changes and alas no "application" file. I just show the following: contacts; desk top; favourites; My Documents; start menu; windows. I receive the HP Scan message each time I boot. This after rebuilding my PC from scratch. I run on XP Pro SP2.

Martin, there has to be an "application" file, or it wouldn't know that it exists. I'm assuming you followed all the procedures above.

Application files are also filename.exe; or an MSI, it depends on how your view is configured. Also, you can do a search for the file. The printer, when it was installed had to be performed with the Administrative permissions. However, it may not have been installed to the ALL USERS profile.

Drop me a note back and I'll be glad to check further.

Thanks Wayne for the quick response. Nice to see I have company Laine!! There are no Application files under the any (admin;all; my own) documents and setting files. When installed the HP files went to the "Program Files" in the C Drive.

The registry cleaner was removing the hp files as orphaned files. Flagged all registry files that had hp in the content and had the file cleaner ignore. This resolved the issue.

Laine & Martin,

You said:
"The problem is...I don't HAVE an Application Data folder. Have you any thoughts as to how I should proceed?"

Everyone has an Application Data folder. If you don't see it, then you have configured Windows to hide all the system folders (the folders that contain all the Windows configuration information).

Follow the procedure below, and when you are done, then go back to the top of this thread and follow my original procedure again. What the procedure below does is change windows explorer so it displays all the system configuration files. If you prefer to hide all the system files again when you are done, the make note of the changes below, so you can put them back and hide all the files when you are done.

- Go to Start Menu
- Right click on My Computer and select Explore
- In the Explorer window that opens, on the right side, double click on C Drive
- In the top menu of this Explorer window, select VIEW, and then select DETAILS
- In the top menu of this Explorer window, select TOOLS, and then select FOLDER OPTIONS
- In the new Folder Options Window, select the TAB labeled VIEW (what we are doing here is telling Explorer what you want to VIEW ... what you want to see ... when you look at your files)

In the small Advanced Settings window, make the following settings:

- SELECT (YES) - Display file size
- SELECT (YES) - Display simple folder view
- SELECT (YES) - Display the contents of system folders
- SELECT (YES) - Show hidden files and folders
- UN-SELECT (NO) - Hide extensions for known file types
- UN-SELECT (NO) - Hide protected operating system files

At the BOTTOM of the window click on APPLY

At the TOP of the window push the button APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS

Windows will warn you this will apply to all NEW explorer windows when you open them.
CLICK YES.

CLOSE all the Explorer/folder windows. Now, all new Explorer windows opened will show you the files and folders you were hiding.

So now you can see all files and folders, go back to the beginning of my fix and you will now see your APPLICATION DATA folder.

Steve, thanks for coming back on this "closed" thread. Indeed the Apps Data was hiding! After all this though, it appears my problem may be different. There already was an HP\Digital Imaging\ folder under the Apps. I added the Data\Destination folders as described. In the Registry I found the exact string as you describe already there. I thus left well enough alone. When I rebooted, I unfortunately received the same HP Cue Scanning Flow Component error message as before. Guess I go back to HP one more time and spend another 5, 6, 7 hours with them!!! Thanks for trying in any case.

Thank you Steve , Wayne and bwt777 for your posts. After all has been tried , the apps folder did finally appear. I am , however in the same predicament as Martin. The HP file already exists and is being used. So that method stopped me in my tracks.

On the other hand , bwt777 suggested flagging the HP entries in the REG scan when cleaning the registry. That worked just fine.

It's an extra step , but if it allows me to use my equipment , then I am more than satisfied. Thank you for re-opening this discussion for us. Your help has been appreciated! -Laine

Steve, you are a legend!!
I, like many others, have been struggling with this issue on my C7280 for over 12 months. Many hours on the phone with HP, downloading and reinstalling software. But the issue always came back. Incredibly frustrating. Finally someone has done the work to diagnose the root cause and determine a fix. You would think that HP should do this, but of course there's no money in it for them. Just the potential for satisfied customers, but they don't need those do they?
Anyway Steve - thank you, thank you and thank you again.

Thanks for the comment Dan ... I'll have to admit I was pretty darned happy when I finally figured out the puzzle.

It really is too bad HP doesn't monitor their own forums to help users ... but it's far worse that we give them the answer and they still won't fix the bug.

The price they will pay is users leaving them and going to a vendor who understands that users only come back if the post-sales experience is good.

I'm afraid this fix doesn't work on all computers. Great for some people, I guess, but not a complete fix.

Normally I wouldn't call tech support because overseas call centers are unhealthy for your blood pressure but I'm at my wits end. Big mistake and waste of time.
HP techs are actually referring to this forum and trying to walk me thru all these steps online, painfully. They're engineering hasn't bothered to investigate the problem theirselves. They are leaving
it to their customers to resolve issues. How useless; I can google just as well as them.

I have a j4550 printer. I bought one a couple of months ago, installed the software and everything worked fine until it was stolen. Since costco was selling these dirt cheap, I bought another. I simply plugged in the new one and everything worked until I tried to scan a document then I started getting this error. I don't run a reg cleaner or anything else that modifies the registry. I've tried the solution here, and it makes sense but doesn't work for me. I've tried removing the drivers, no help.
Tried unplugging, turning the machine off, etc., no help. Tech support said unplug the machine, then punch the power button 15-20 times. LOL

I have a virtual machine with the printer installed and it works fine but like I said it won't work in the host machine. The only thing I can tell between the two is that hpqkygrp.exe is picking up a different version of the runtime dll on the host machine. Looks like this has something to do with the .net framework because the dll is in the windows\winsxs\... folder. The
host is running with different .net versions, the virtual machine doesn't have .net installed but the dll is stored away in the windows\winsxs\... folder.

By the way, the ProfileWritePath on the virtual machine is pointing to %APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
where APPDATA is C:\Documents and Settings\me\Application Data, but I don't have a 'Destination' folder for 'me' so why
doesn't it fail?

I've had enough. Soon as I find another printer, this one is getting returned.

Deleting and re-installing HP products does not fix.

SO THANKS TO STEVE ANDbwt777 FOR ASKING THE PROBLEM.
