ok my laptop has worked fine since the day i got it but now i seem to be having a issue which is serious for me. i am using windows vista home premium. what happens is, i will put my computer to sleep and or hibernate and upon waking up from one of those to my laptop will not boot or resume. The Harddrive light will blink for about 2-5 seconds and then just completely stop blinking. i then turn of my my computer by using the hard shutdown method and after i do that i turn it back on and it still has the same problem. i must turn it off about over 8 times for it to work again and even when it does work again, if i shut it down correctly the same problem still occurs.
has this happened to anybody else

If anybody has any solutions or knows the general reason why this happens your answers would be much appreciated

Use the link below to find your drivers page.If you aren't sure which model you have in the TX1000 series, use the "Start Detection" option:

Your problem is to do with hibernation.
Lots of notebooks do not hibernate well in Vista.
The solution is to turn off all hibernation.
Thank out the power adapter plug. Take the battery out and leave it out for 12 hrs - Then Plug in with only the power adapter and press the power button to start up. Go to start > contol centre > hardware and sound > power options> change power savings settings > change plan settings (under balanced settings)> advanced settings, and change all the power button settings to never hibernate or sleep. Configure the start menu power button and the power button to shut down.
Then shut down through the menu.
Remove the power adapter, put the battery back, put the power adapter in again, and start up with the power button.
Hope this helps.

see the weird thing is that i thought it was also the hibernate mode but then once after i got the laptop to access the harddrive and boot windows again i put it to sleep and it did the exact same thing where it wouldnt access the harddrive. it even shut it self right after i pressed the power button (exactly 2 seconds after i pressed the power button) im beginning to think that there is somthing wrong with the way the recovery disk i orderd from hp was made. but idk......ill try everything that you guys said and hopefully it works but i need some insight as to why you guys think this is happening or if you have had the same problem.
thanks

HI Jastep
Like I said, hibernation (and sleep) is a problem with some notebooks and vista.
If you do what I advised and get the notebook never to hibernate or sleep then you will have no problems.
I regularly turn off both of these functions on new notebooks with vista.

Let us know how you get on.

ok i tried the things that both of you told me but now there is an even bigger problem......ok i recently called hp and told them what was happening. they then instructed me to use the recovery cd. the recovery cd will restore everything to a certain point but it fail each time on the last step saying that it cant restore my computer due to a fatal error within the data that was taken from the disk. now what i do usually is let the os start up and then use task manager to shut down the "FBIGUI manger program. that actually works but the problem still stand because i cant use any of my regular devices at all even when i enable them from device manger.....hp is currently shipping me a new recovery cd but im afraid that it wont work and as of today i only have 14 more days for my warranty and the disk is going to take 3-4 days to come...
i need some souloutions to this problem so i can see if i can fix it before the disk comes so please feel free to tell me

A Warranty is only good for the hardware on your computer.
It sounds like your own recovery disk was damaged (which is not uncommon if it it dirty or scratched). All should work well when the new recovery disk arrives from HP.
Nothing much you can do until the HP delivery arrives.
(You do realise that you will lose all your data on the computer when you do such a recovery don't you?)

ok now the problem is that the recovery cd process always fails at the part where it is supposed to make itself the recovery partition.

i get the message "recovery process cannot complete beyond this point please contact your notebooks manufacture"....i called hp and they want to send me a third recovery disk (which im sure has the same exact thing as the first two). i really need some solution's at this point because it urks me that im a computer tech and i cant fix this problem myself so please keep the solution's coming.

Hi Jastep
Well, I may be wrong, but AFAIK notebooks don'e have a recovery partition. Only HP desktops have a D: recovery partition.

In which case, return under warranty quick smart.

well its not exactly a solution im just hardheaded when it comes to me wanting electronics to work i don't give up that easy because we all know that warranty is just an empty promise to ease your mind. i would still like to try and figure out why it kept having that error cause i don't really want to run into that problem again

<because we all know that warranty is just an empty promise to ease your mind. >
Well, HP do honour their warranty agreements - they are not empty promises.
But you do realise don't you that warranties are only for Hardware, and not for software.

<i would still like to try and figure out why it kept having that error cause i don't really want to run into that problem again>

Well, as I said in an earlier post. CD's sometimes will not work if they are damaged with scratches, or have greasy fingermarks on them etc.
Maybee in handling the CD you managed to 'clean' it somehow. Or maybee you had dust or grit in your CD ROM that finally fell out or cleaned itself up - sho knows.
I had an instance the other day where a CD would not work, but it did after we cleaned off the obvious greasy thumbmark with 'lunch crumbs in it, on the 'silver side'.

@jastep

I own a TX1220US and have exactly the same problem. It first started like a month ago when the wireless LAN wouldn't start and had to connect with ethernet cable to my router, at first I thouth it was the comodo pro firewall, but then it started acting exactly the same way yours did since 5 days ago, initially suspected of the sleeping function (had no hybernation), then vista, since vista was already showing some corruption signs, I thought that was it and decided yesterday to have a fresh start and gave it a go to Leopard 10.5.2 (Leo4All Ver.2) Yay lol!

I followed the instructions and everything went fine, it recognized my wireless LAN automatically, connected to the internet and I was a very happy camper, untill I rebooted. It hasn't find my wireless LAN card except once more and still having a very hard time to make it boot, only after many, many attempts. It's the same, the harddrive will blink for about 2-5 secs. and the screen is allways black, not even the bootup Logo.

So now I am suspecting about the BIOS (ver F.1B), if not the CPU or something else, by the way this laptops overheat to the point you can't even stand them on your laps! WTF.

Please help if someone has already had this problem and found the solution to it.

Thanks.

What a ... The same thing happened to me.I have a pavilion tx1030la. First about 6 months ago my wireless card just go away and never work again. I've to aquired a brand new USB wireles because hp Support team never give me any kind of solution. Then a month ago I've used the laptop only with de battery, then i goes to another room and when i come back the laptop is turned off. After plugged, the leds turn it on but nothing is displayed on the screen, not even the HP logo. I've tried to turn it on whitout the memory, hard disk, cd drive, but nothing works. It seems like HP program this laptops to broke all at the same time and my warranty its expired. I cant boot form any disk even with a external USB cd rom

By tyhe way, a new Mother board for this model cost about $500 dlls!!

IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE WHO HAVE THIS MODEL

ok well i can let the both of you know what i did.
firs i power cycled the laptop meaning i turned it of and on again and again (hard booting it)until it came to the hp screen where it starts up then i let it proceed to the desktop and went to the hp recovery maneger (i backed up my files before this)and let did a factory default setting from their. now if i was you guys i would get a xp cd and let it boot into the partition creation mode. create a partition and delete it, do this 4TIMES exactly then let xp install and wait till you get to the desktop the shutdown. then if you bought recovery cd,s like i did let them re-install of of that. if you didnt buy recovery cd,s i suggest you do they are only about 15$

the wifi disappearing issue is quite common for tx1000 (which is what i have). the problem appeared on mine a couple of days ago, and i have been collecting info since then.

i have been documenting this here: http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=19208

I have the exact same problem with mine and have sent it in twice for issues. I told HP repair about the wireless issue and they absolutely ignored and only documented the other issue of it not powering on or not returning from sleep. On the second trip in, they turned it around same day and said it was fixed. It has failed every day since and they refuse to help any further on the issue.

I am having this random boot up problem as well. My wireless stopped working 4 months ago but HP replaced my laptop's motherboard back then. Now my wireless is still working fine, but I'm having random boot up problem where the lights are on, but the computer doesn't actually boot up. I have to force-shut down, remove batteries, AC cord, couple times to get it to boot up properly.

Adrian,

Your story along with mine and the rest are all the same so why is HP not acknowledging this widespread problem. They need to extend all warranties to fix these lemons for free.

I've been having the same problem with my laptop the last two weeks. I've had mine for 1yr and 3 months, so the warranty is useless. My problem started with the screen going out. Not out completely but it would change to vertical colored lines and I couldn't do anything further with it after that happen. I would have to pull the battery to shut it down. I tried reformatting with the recovery disk I purchased with the computer. It took 3 tries before it took. Even then I continued to have the same problem. Now it won't bootup at all. All the lights come on when I try but the hard drive light only flickers for a few seconds then goes out completely and the computer stll doesn't boot up. I've never had this problem with hp laptops b4 so I'm at a lost as how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem with my HP Tx1000z. Purchased it June of last year, my warranty expired 2 months ago. I can't get HP to help; its obviously a motherboard issue or issue with the Nvidia chip. HP recalled some modelswith the same issues, but say the Tx1000 is not one of the affected models. I spent $1700 on a lemon!

ok see i also thought that it might be a motherboard problem but upon further inspection i realized that it couldn't be. the reason i say this is because if it were a motherboard issue then even after i re-install (which is like over 20 times already due to this problem) it should still have the same problem, which it doesn't. im beginning to think that this is some kind of software issue with hp. maybe something they installed in the version of the vista premium might be doing this.

ok so i called up hp today to find out if i would get some kind of incentive for the motherboard manufacturers defect that we all are having. As you guys can guess they left me up a creek with absolutely no paddle. I was told that this problem has not shown up in their system so their will be no extended service for this laptop.

I figured out what we must do as faithful consumers and here's what Ive come up with.

1-we must find as many people as we can who have the same problem as all of us and call into to hp so that they recognize this hardware defect (i was told this by the person i spoke to at hp)\

2-somehow contact the president of hp and get him to realize this issue

i think if we all advert our energy to these choices that the end result will be a glorious one. tell me what you guys think

yesterday i was using my Tx1305us in the Main room and decide to go to bedrom but whem i get in there i see the wifi was not working and i tried to use the switch in the font to use my wifi but i didnt find. the light stays orange and on the device manager i cant see the broadcom wireless, tried to instal last drivers, take out the baterry for ome minutes but nothing. im very upset spending so much money, in something i tought i would user for at lest 2 years and now 10 months i allready have a problem. i had a lot of laptops and this one is the firt to get this kind of problems. hope hp make recals for this Tx series cause i been looking for this problem and many people have the same problem. The problem looks like the motherboard is the problem and not the Broadcom wifi card.

jastep is right.

I shipped my out-of-warranty tx1000 for repairing accepting to pay for the service. I included a note with my laptop describing how disastrous my experience with HP is and how unacceptable it is to have this kind of motherboard problem on a 1 year-old computer.
I also wrote a similar note to the CEO through his contact form on hp.com

The good news is they replaced the board and shipped it back to me refunding the $300 they originally charged me. So far the laptop is working.

I am experiencing the same thing myself. i have been unsuccessful in getting my computer to turn back on. i will continue to try everyone's suggestions on this page. Who do we need to send our email "complaints" to in order to get a resolution to this issue? Has anyone noticed if it is only an issue with the tx1000 series, or does it also involve the tx2000 series too? thanks - Joe

I have been on the phone wiht HP for hours and all of the solutions have failed. we even purchased an extended warranty. First the touchscreen wouldn't work, but after we did the recommended recovery, it did work - but now we have network errors. The errors are so erratic and make no sense - we are connect to a server, can use the files, but can't save back unless we drag the files over. It's ridiculous - I can create a folder but I can't rename it! I can't even use the Total Care Advisor for updates - they always fail. More recommendations from HP - we did a full reformat and even a registry scrub but they still tell me it's a network problem - even thogh we have paid hundreds of dollars to a tech company and even the tech company tells HP it's not a network problem. Any suggestions? I want to send this thing back but HP won't take it back - unless I pay the additional $60 to talk to their network support. I asked them if we find out it is a hardware problem, would I get my money back and they said no! Unbelievable....

im having the same problem with my tx1000

it turns on and all the lights are fine but my screen is just black. the fan seems to be ok and its just my screen. i called technical support last and the guy i talked to said im out of luck and if i even wanted to talk to someone about it i would need to pay $99 for a year of phone support or 49.99 for two weeks but i didnt feel that this would be useful and declined.

I know that everyones saying call customer support but since im out of warranty already and i just out of luck? im so frustrated because all my files are on my laptop and its very difficult to study when all my notes are on a laptop that wont even turn on T.T

same problem, just posting cos the more complainers the merrier, and hopefully accelerated results...

wireless card on tx1000 started to fail, ltd or no connectivity or disabled when clearly in range of a network, now, when attempting to restart, all the lights come on but gets stuck at black screen, basically the same exact thing as all above. it will come on if I fiddle with combinations of removing the battery and only using AC or vice versa, but it's very random. computer is a bit over a year old, still on vista home premium (not SP1). considering a USB wireless card workaround and disabling the onboard wireless but as stated above, might not do the trick. would be really nice to have an HP rep post something here!?!?!?

anyway thanks all for the info...

This is almost too weird to see that theres so many of us that are having a problem with our HP TX1000. Just like several of you that posted. My problem started a few weeks ago when my wireless devise would just dissapear or not detected. I had to purchase a usb wireless device in order to connect to the internet. Today my laptop wont just turn on (reboot) just like everyone else's problem description. I can see that everyone has similar of problem and I am not quite sure what the solution is really? Where do I go from here. My warranty expired JULY 2008. I am extremely worried. I would greatly appreciate any advise.

I have had a similar problem with my tx1019. First the wireless issue with the reinstall of the chipset driver, wireless assistant, and wireless network adapter.
Now the issue is that it will not power up. When I turn it on the lights come on and as soon as 2 seconds all power is gone. With or without the battery in place the same thing happens. I cannot even get it to boot up to reinstall the OS.
Does anyone have this same issue?

ME TOO!
i've had this computer for a year and 2 months and FIRST the WLAN didn't work so i reset to factory settings and NOW the screen is black but the LEDs are on and the fan is going!

THIS IS REDICULOUS! I bought an extended warranty for WAYYY too much. Last time i EVER spend over 1300 on an HP laptop!

If HP wants to win me back, fix my broken computer for free. Too many hours wasted on your support lines for NO REASON!

I don't have a solution but i have the same exact problem. Here is what i plan to do:

I will contact HP's corporate office and attempt to speak with a someone there regarding this issue. Here is the contact information for their office in the US:

Hewlett-Packard Company
3000 Hanover Street
Palo Alto, CA 94304-1185 USA
Phone: (650) 857-1501

The more people that do this, the better. It is in there best interest to address this issue.

Our tx1000 series are not listed under the HP warranty enhancement program and we can't do a thing about it.

looks like we spent two grand on a brick.

I have had my HP tx1000 for 1 year and 1 month. I have been having the same problems with the wireless internet for the last month or so. Sometimes my computer was able to detect wireless networks and at other times it would say it couldn't detect any wireless networks, even though they were clearly there (I checked on another computer). About a month after the wireless internet started getting wierd my computer just stopped working all together. I would try to turn on my computer and it would just make a clicking noise. And then by the third try it would finally turn on and the fan would start to run, but nothing would happen and the screen stayed blank. So I took m laptop into a local laptop repair shop and they told me it was going to be $850 to replace my motherboard because it is "constrained". Needless to say I didn't pay it, and I found this forum online. I tried to call HP tech support and they told me $390-$490 for the motherboard. Then I called the number jastep put up earlier;
1 877-917-4380 (John). He said that hp would fix my computer no charge and that HP is going to replace anything that is broken on the computer. I haven't gotten the box to mail in my computer yet (I just spoke with him about 3 hours ago) but I am hopeful and I will let you know how it all turns out!

It is unbelievable how obvious it is that HP whether knowingly or unknowingly manufactured and sold a batch of defective TX series laptop sometime in early 2007 or late 2006. Beacuse as we can all see the symptoms are all reflective in our postings (dissapearing wireless devise after hibernation to having our laptop DEAD and useless) I too have attempted to call the number posted by Jaslep 1-877-917-4380 and unfortunately the person that answered the phone was not as enthusiastic and willing to help me. Nevertheless, my converstaion with customer service (tech support department) was just the same wherein she was very much familiar with what I was describing but unfortunately my warranty ran out and Hp does not recognize this issue as a big enough problem that they would be willing to fix the laptop for free or even do anything out of courtesy for that matter and it could cost me $398.00 to replace the motherboard. But the more I read up on this thread and also this other threads: http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447626+1224818153029+28353475&threadId=1188907

the more I get frustrated and annoyed. I will try and call tomorrow and see what happens. By the way, MariaA I would love to hear any updates from John (1-877 number) If HP will in fact honor what he told you.

Same problem with me since this morning 28/10/2008. Mine TX 1220us bought in USA thirteen months ago. Used as a spare laptop in my Lisbon flat probably used 30 hours since new.
Symptoms
1. Turn on computer all lights on ok. Hard drive noise & light on for a couple of seconds.
2. The blank screen!
3. Fan running all else ok
(Checked power supply removed battery etc but no joy!)
Like all the rest of us I was shocked to see the common HP Tx1000 problem on this forum thread & the lack of interest from HP technical support.

Same problems with my tx1000. Started with wireless LAN going out at one year old. Another 10 or so months later, display wigged out had to power off and on several times before it recovered. After the third time of same problem within about 2 weeks, laptop won't recover. I bought a new battery thinking it might fix the problem. A few tries with the new battery and now the thing won't even do the harddrive light flash thing. The lights flash once and then immediately shut off. It acts like a dead battery, but does the same with or without battery and whether or not I let it charge. This bites....

Check this: http://tinyurl.com/2jxruy

Goto <HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement> for a list of many symptoms caused by motherboard failure, and laptops affected -- my fury is that altho my model number (dv9000) is covered, only certain pruduct numbers under dv9000 are included, and mine is not one of them! The problem is the motherboard, and the symptoms include loss of bootup, VERY slow bootup, WiFi stops working, etc. If we join together we can stop their refusal to fix their machines. I spent hours with their call center and all they kept saying (politely, of course) is that my product number is not covered. The repair with shipping is well over $500 and it is because of their motherboards!

just came across this forum. mine is an hp tx119us series. was working well for about 15 months, then all of a sudden, screen was just blank when i turn it on. all lights indicate power is on just nothing on the screen. did all the fix needed, customer support including. to make long story short, need to turn it in to hp to repair for at least $400, with of course all the possibility that data are all lost. have another one at work and did the same. i will email CEO, if i don't get any favorable response, i'll just shy away from this company.

I have the same problem WITH TWO LAPTOPS.

One of them had intermittent problems but I thought it was the power button and not the laptop itself when it would take a few tries to get it to turn on then one day it just stopped booting.

The other one went from working fine to not working at all, after the wireless device stopped being recognised.

Neither of them will turn on at all now. One of them just makes clicking noises.

This is so upsetting. What a huge waste of money.

It is absolutely ridiculous. I purchased my tx1120us last yr, in February. Since then it has been nothing but trouble. When I first purchased it the touch screen did not work, and I had to ship it in for repair while it was still under warranty. Shortly there after, anytime the computer was turned off or put into hibernation mode, it would not turn back on. The unit was getting power, but the Hard Drive light was not blinking, and nothing was happening. It was just a blank screen with lights. I have phoned them and I cannot even receive technical support until I pay $50. That is out of this world. That does not even include the cost of repair or having to ship the laptop into HP. With all of these issues with this Tablet, there needs to be a recall. There are other forums online like this one that are prove that almost every single tx1000 series laptop is affected. And to be honest, something needs to be done. I will be on the phone with HP.

Oh and to top it off, I had the Power Brick melt. I had the laptop plugged in, while watching an episode of the office. I smell a burning smell, think nothing of it, the power on my laptop goes, and what is it? The chord melted near the power brick. I need this laptop for school, and having it sit there as a 6lbs brick does nothing for me. This laptop having to be repaired for something stupid everytime I turn it on. And BTW, i am writing this on an ASUS EeePC.

My TX1220us notebook is 13 months old and has been used for about 40 hours. It is going to cost me $400 to replace the defective motherboard & judging from the other posts is likely to be a temporary repair!
To all the other 1000´s of HP victims out there – We will fail to achieve a victory on this issue because we are acting like reasonable people.
There is a major inherent design fault within our notebooks which in the majority of cases is causing a catastrophic failure when the units are just out of the 12 months warranty period.

I am almost sure that HP is very much aware of this problem. It is almost hard to believe that they have not been made aware of this TX series defect. I think that they are just conveniently brushing off the problem in the hopes that it will eventually go away.

I had an interesting conversation with the case manager which was repeatedly posted here 1-877-917-4380. she claims that she is the one in charge of this specific problem but yet claims that she knows nothing of this issue. It would be really great if everyone can call her. She also claims that HP values our concerns and once there are more than half a dozen complain regarding the same issue HP normally would take the steps in recognizing the problem. I mentioned to her to check out these forums and that not only we are exceedingly more than half a dozen with identical issues that should be acknowledged. She also cross examined/interrogated me and my relationship wth my TX1000 and what went wrong and once in awhile reiterated that my case (problem) had no bearing on everyone's posting in this forum because each individual case differs. After the cross examination she figured that the caused of my laptop's death was the fact that I had used an external wireless device (I had to buy one in order to connect to the internet) she claims that because of this and I, knowingly used a device that was not authorized by HP it had eventually caused my laptop to fail due to a conflict.

Immediately, after I hung up with her I called tech support (without giving details of my own personal information) I mentioned that I've been having a problem with my TX1000's wireless device dissapearing for several weeks now and would it be fine if I use an external wireless device in order to connect to the internet. the tech support guy did not ask in details nor volunteered any other help but just said it was perfectly fine. I then ask him if he wanted to walk me through fixing my wireless network device that kept dissapering and he stated that it would be much more convenient to use my external wirless device since I already have one handy. I then asked him if HP recommends a specific brand or type he said not really and any usb external wireless device will do.

Nevertheless, this sums up my eventful conversation with our supposedly case manager and her efforts in trying to dodge this serious TX problem.

This is my first time posting, and low and behold: I have had the exact same issue with the tx1000 series. I will briefly summarize the history of the problem.

I bought the laptop around 1.5 years ago. About 1 month before the 12 month warranty was up, I experienced first the problem where it wouldn't recognize my wireless card that was quickly followed by the computer only booting to a blank screen (well boot is the wrong word, just turned fan on). Since it was under warranty, I called and did the hours of tech support and ended up sending it back to be fixed. I got it back the first time, and it said that the "heat sink" had been replaced. When I tried to turn it on, the blank screen problem lo and behold was still there. So I called in and the sent me another box to send it back the second time. So a week later, I get it back and it says that the motherboard was replaced. This time, it actually fixed all the problems, and everything seems to be working correctly.

However, just yesterday (about 6 months after the motherboard replace). I woke up and tried to turn it on after a hibernate, the problem was there again. It would not turn on at all. Only the blank screen if I can get the lights to actually stay on. I called customer support and got the standard line that I could pay to get it fixed being that it is out of warranty.

I also realized that just a few days ago before this happened for the second time, the computer ran "hp health check" and a few problems came up that needed to be "fixed." One of those was "bios update." I ran the bios update, and now I am starting to wonder if that had anything to do with the crash. Most likely not considering I think what is happening here is that our motherboards are burning out do to the prior-mentioned cpu nvidio gsu issue.

Did anybody recently update their bios from hp health check???

I plan on contacting the case manager and emailing the CEO as prior posters have.

I will keep everyone updated!!! GOOD LUCK

Update:

I first emailed a full desciption of the problem to the CEO's office (Mike Herd) from one of the links previously given. I have not heard back from them and assume that I will not.

I then called the 1-877 number for the "case manager" that was previously listed on this board. The number prompts you to enter in an extension number for the case manager. Since nobody had an extension number, I just entered nothing, and was sent to hold for addtional support. I stayed on the line and listened to their hold music for 35 minutes until I eventually hang up.

I continued to call the general customer support at 800-hp-invent. The first representative sent me through to technical support, even though my tx1000 was out of warranty. When I reached technical support, the man listened to my particular problem. He then looked at my previous repair record (when this same thing happened before when the computer was under warranty). He informed me that he was not going to be able to "troubleshoot" this problem (without me paying) since my warranty was 193 days expired. He told me that there was no official policy regarding out of warranty service with this model. He then double checked with a "level 2" technician to make sure that there was any unnofficial plans in the works to repair these models. He cam back and said there was nothing that he was aware of as to unnoficial warranty regarding this issue with this particular model.

I then asked if I would be able to talk with a case manager to make an official report about this problem (in hopes that they might actually fix the problem). He scheduled a callback from the case manager department about my particular issue. At the end of the call, he told me that he was going to forward my concern to the hp case manager department and a "level 2 technician." He also gave me a new support ticket number to refer back to.

That is where I am at right now in the process of trying to get my tx1000 fixed of this common problem that everyone on this board is having. I will keep the board posted if and when I talk to someone next.

I encourage all of you to try and call them and request to make a report with the case manager department. I am sure if they get enough calls, something will be done about it (I hope) for all of us who are stuck just out of warranty.

Good luck!

the same thing with tx1000.

Will not wake up from sleep mode, will not turn on after rebooting/shutting down bu t wifi is OK. Screen is dead black. Sometimes it turns of by itself after random time 1 sec - 2 minutes.

I found a way to turn it on, two out of ten attempts will work. I did it about 10 times so far. I am writing this post with tx1000.

WHAT I DO IS:
0) tx1000 is dead.
1) Plugging in the docking station. Power adapter plugged directly to the laptop.
2) turning on tx1000 and after 1 or 2 or 3 seconds unplugging docking station. I did it couple of times but i am STILL UNSURE about the excact amount of time in seconds!!
3) the hp logo shows up, system starts up.

Be aware that it may be only coinsidence that this method actually works!!!!!! But it's worth giving it a try.

I bought it on June 2007 in USA, warranty expired 3 months ago. I cannot even call HP. Never had a problem with wifi.

Same problem as others with "no boot" and blank screen with tx1000; However, no wifi problems. 15 months old; contacted tech support via phone and email to no avail. Same roadblock with phone support in that they wanted to have my credit card info before we coule proceed. Case worker # contacted today but, of coarse, no case worker available. Promise of return call as appears to be the norm. What I have done, to no avail, that I haven't seen in the threads was to attach an external monitor so I could see exactly what was happening since my screen was blank. I was able to boot into safe mode one time. Other than that I could get to the system restore screen through f11 and tried a few roll backs to no avail. Did not try a system restore since I was hopefull that it was something simple that I was overlooking and I did not want to jeopardize my data unnecessarily. I am trying the power drain thing now but even if it works its like putting a band aid on an appendectomy. With this many issues on one site how many more are there.

Luck to all and hopefully HP will aknowledge the problem they certainly know exists.

I have had the same problem.  Something you might try as it worked for me.  I realize that those of us in this situation are very angry.  However, send HP a well-written and reasonable e-mail via the "communicate with the CEO link".  Explain your disappointment with the situation and the financial hardship it is causing.

Write in a fair, not insulting, but firm manner.  Be sure that you come off as a very reasonable person.

HP responded to me.  I have repaired computer coming back to me today.  Who knows how long it will work, but it did get fixed for free.

Same problems as all of you.

9 month old tx1000. After a few months, the wifi would just cut out randomly, occasionally. Just a quick reboot and it would start working again. The wireless hardware would just dissappear.

Later, I would get a black screen upon startup. Holding the power button down until it reset, then turning it on again a couple of times would get it to come on.

Then, I had to cycle power 10 - 20 times before it would come on. Now, I just get a black screen. No bios splash screen or anything. I hear the fan come on, the cd drive move, a beep, LEDs light up, then just nothing.

Yep. My tx1000's Broadcom wireless card "vanished" a few days ago seemingly out of the blue. Played the tech support game... drivers, BIOS, reboots, recovery... nothing. They even shipped me a new wireless card. Didn't work. Now they're sending a box. I feel lucky... I'm 9 months in and still under warranty. And judging from the comments, it looks like I was heading to stage 2 soon (the "blank boot" issue). I had a feeling something so small that runs so hot would have problems eventually.

Anyway. Take the 2 minutes to register and keep filling in these comments. HP needs to know it's got a stinker here.

Powered it off and on again, it either immediately shuts off or comes on with a black screen, never even gets to the BIOS screen.

I've been in this forum since first part of Nov 08, and I've only seen two whose laptops were fixed for free despite being out of warranty. They were Horacio Storni's and Kristopher Diaz's. All the rest were either ignored or given false hopes. I have called emailed Mr. Hurd and has gotten in touch with a case manager, but sad to say, if they don't find your laptop model in the list of products currently on recall, you have to pay to fix it or leave it as it is....DEAD.

I had a similar problem and my machine died just after warranty..

I escalated the issue at appropriate level within HP.

Thereafter, I was contacted by HP(local, India) to diagnose the machine for free.

They picked up my machine from my house and repaired the same within 10 days. I was told that the motherboard has been replaced.

Excellent service so far from HP...

Hope that the machine will not give me any problem going forward...

My HP TX1000 went though the same stages as several others in this list: first the wireless became flaky, finally dying. Then the machine itself had trouble "waking up" from sleep. Now it is completely dead. I tried removing the wifi card, to no avail.

Needless to say, I'm not in waranty anymore, and I hesitate to start the apparently useless process of contacting help, given the various stories I read here.

So I guess I'll wait to see if HP finally wakes up itself.

This is not good for HP. It is like steeling money indirectly.
At least they should replay to this thread and make an announcement about this problem. (Huh, that if they really care about their customers)

I purchased a TX1000 in April of 2007 and last week I suddenly couldn't connect to the internet and thought it was my router, so I replaced it. Then, after reading about a number of people having the same problem, I ascertained that it was the WLAN in my HP disappearing so I bought a new USB adapter and am back on-line. I have simultaneously been having random pboot-up roblems and decided to see if there was a fix when I wound up in this forum.....what a disappointment! I now believe that my computer is dying and there is nothing I can or HP will do about it. With preinstalled software, I have $1,800 in this thing and am shocked to find that everyone that has the problem !

Hey. I have to say, I'm in Kenya, and HP replaced my tx1000 quite fast, and I'm getting the extended warranty asap. They replaced the board as usual, and I'm back online. They also replaced my screen with tx2000 display (thanks..), but ít doesn't have the touch functionality. I'll hand it back in after new years though.

Oh - and it came back with the wlan restored and working....but the bluetooth (which is what I use most for web connectivity) is nowhere to be seen (grrr). Plus the fan is almost not working - the machine hits 96C (about 204.8F) just browsing through photos!! It can't even recalculate the Windows Experience Index as the overheat failsafe kicks in and shuts it down. Terrible what HP is doing to me, just terrible.

I got a nice Christmas present this year... The black screen of death on my tx 1000.
I had a couple lock-ups where the screen would garble and display tiled crash images.
After a couple restarts it happened a third and final time. Now I boot to the sound of a
fan spinning and some pretty blue lights but no screen at all.
This has been the hottest and loudest laptop I have ever owned and now that I'm 5 months out of warranty it is now another brick.
HP needs to own up to the obviously faulty mobo/graphics issues that I seem to remember Nvidia having recalled many similar systems for this same thing.
Till then I'm another unsatisfied tx1000 user.

This is clearly a common problem with the TX1000s and should be addressed by HP...

My computer worked fine until yesterday.  Today I go the "black screen of death" - leds light up, fan works, and screen is blank.  I couldn't even get an image to display on an external monitor.

I'm still under the first year warranty so HP agreed to take it in for review/service, but I'll share the steps their IT support walked me through in case they work for anyone else:

#1) Unplug AC, remove battery, hold down power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.  Insert battery, plug in AC, turn on and immediately push F10 rapidly for 30 seconds.  Supposedly if BIOS screen pops up there are fix options but my screen remained blank, so we went to #2.

#2) Repeat #1!

#3) Unscrew RAM panel on underside.  Reinsert two RAM strips then reinsert back into their original slots.  Replace RAM planel.

#4) Unscrew hard drive panel on underside.  Remove hard drive.  Reinsert hard drive.  Replace panel.

#5) Insert battery, plug in AC, turn on and immediately push F10 rapidly for 30 seconds.  Hope for the screen to work or BIOS screen to appear.

None of this worked for me so it's going in for repair...

Hello everyone,

I hope I can get some help. My HP TX1000 died on Monday morning December 22, 2008. I bought it a year and a half ago in June 2007 while I was in the military.

It is not powering up at all. Just lights up when the power adapter is plugged into it. I slide the power switch and the lights around the laptop come on for a second and then nothing! Dead.

I called HP support later in the afternoon and they convinced me to spend $45 to talk to a lady tech. She couldn't tell me what was wrong with my laptop. Basically, she tried to have me flash the bios by turning on the power switch and pressing F1 at the same time. Needless to say, it did not work. I should have known better than to spend $45 for nothing.

After trying it a few times and not getting anywhere, because the laptop is dead, she suggested I send it in for repairs and telling me it would be at least $300 to fix it. She says it is just out of warranty. Great, thank you.

I told her I spent over $1000 for it just a year and a half ago. And this is not right unacceptable.

My friend is going to look at it tomorrow. After reading all these posts from people with the same HP computer power problems, I have a feeling that it may not be just a simple fix like the power adapter. The power adapter is turning on the blue light where the adapter plugs into the side of the laptop.

This is just not right and totally unacceptable that the laptop just went dead in less than a year and a half!

I feel screwed because it is just out of warranty and HP wants to charge for fixing a known problem.

Help.

The power on then immediate shutoff thing is just part of the pre-toasted mode. Mine did that from almost day 1 and I just dealt with it fumbling with the switch a couple times and it finally boots. I did some more research on this issue and it is the nvidia onboard graphics that dies for most. That's why the lights come on and you can hear a cd boot and everything but it just hangs after that. Requires a new motherboard that the card is part of to be replaced. If your a few months out of warranty like most of us then your screwed. I figure what is the point of paying them to replace my motherboard when the same thing will probably happen again due to heat from a badly designed product.

I suggest that everyone with this problem contact HP and demand resolution for what is clearly a manufacturing problem.  They've issued extended warranties on a number of models for the same breakdown.  Take down names, departments, case #s, contact #s.  Let them know you are documenting it and are absolutely not satisfied with their responses if it's not repair/replacement.  I did this with an old HP printer that died after a common problem that I also found TONS of people complaining about on the web (similar to this).  I got no results until I'd escalated about 3 times via phone and email to address what they clearly would not - a malfunction in their hardware.  They sent me a new printer that day.  I hate to say it, but be a jerk.  It doesn't always matter if your warranty is up.  Give it a shot - you have nothing to lose.

When I called HP support (thankfully 3 weeks left on my warranty) they knew EXACTLY what was wrong with my laptop without my getting into the details.  They've heard it all before.

I had my laptop for about a half a year after buying it when my wireless started to crash. Sometimes it would work randomly after I restarted the laptop, and so I had to keep it on to keep the wireless. Eventually I got the black screen upon turning it on (no bios just a fan and blue lights). Sometimes the blue lights and fan would turn on for half a second and the thing woud turn off right after it was turned on. For a few weeks i kept trying to turn it on and two weeks later it finally turned on fine. The wireless never recovered though, it was always faulty, and the laptop didn't even recognize the wireless card as if it never existed. Then 2 years after buying the laptop it blacked out and wouldn't turn on at all. HP support wanted to charge us for technical support to talk about a known problem. People in forums have stated that their instructions do not help. I'm in tough spot right now, I think HP should recall the laptop or at least the faulty wireless card.

HP has issued extended warranty/repair for a subset of their laptops but not all. See http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us#c01087277_bios. If your PC is experiencing any of the listed symptoms I'd call them ASAP - whether your model's on the list or not.

I also bought the laptop on june of 2007. The problem consisted for months before I decided to find out the problem. Now, my laptop won't even turn on.

For a bit, what worked was unplugging the ac adapter and battery and then holding the power buttpn for 30 seconds to drain the battery, then replacing it.

That doesn't work for me anymore, so I just emailed mike hurd hopefully to get the same free fixing promise that some of you posted to have gotten.

Just in case I forget, thank you to all who supported information because at one point, it did help me. If the email follows through, thank you even more.

So I have a tx1320us and the same problem happened to me: when the power button is pressed the led lights and the fan come on, but the screen is completely blank. The first time this occurred was one month before the warranty expired so they sent me a box and they repaired it under warranty by replacing the whole touchscreen. After about 3 weeks after getting it back and just a few weeks after my one year warranty expired, the same thing happened and my computer doesn't boot up. The online chat did not want to give me a repair box to send it to them because the warranty has expired. I explained to him that I had the same problem as before and he keeps telling me that it is out of warranty, he gave me the repair order only after I had given him the first repair order number and saying that since it is the same problem, they will fix it under warranty. I just got my computer back yesterday and this time they replaced the systemboard. I'm hoping that the computer lasts me until this semester of school because not having a computer definitely takes away from taking notes in class.

My wife's TX1000, which is now out of warranty, also has this fault. First the WiFi disappears from the device list and now it lights up but won't come out of stand-by.

I thought I'd fixed the problem last week when I swapped out the Hard Disk for a solid state one, rebuilding it with the latest device drivers and service patches available. It lasted a week before the WiFi disappeared again and since yesterday we can no longer get it to start. Unfortunate we didn't see this forum months ago and we could have taken action within the warranty period.

Does anyone understand why HP's are not including the TX1000 in the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement? When they do, will this include the UK?

I have been in correspondence with HP regarding my TX1000 and referenced this forum. I have received the following official response.

"I would like to inform you that as of now we have not heard any known issue with the hardware of HP Pavilion tx1020ea series notebook. There is no information in our tested and research database pertaining to hardware issues. If you are experiencing any issue with the notebook, then it may be an exceptional case. I would apologize for any misrouted information provided to you in any sources of forum or conversation."

Despite evidence to the contrary, HP do not acknowledge this fault in the TX1000, despite having accepted a similar fault in numerous other laptops.

Same problem

1- Turn on laptop, all lights on normal.
2- Screen black, nothing came out.
3- Fan running, physical seem OK

Luckly still in warranty HP will take care of it only I will be out of a computer for over 2 weeks ETA, after reading all of these issues not sure I want to continue with HP since I have 3 lap tops with them and 2 are out of warranty, and definetly will be selling my TX2132la as soon as it gets back from tech.

I am the unfortunate owner of a TX1220us notebook that failed one month after the 12 month warranty expired. The unit was only used for about 40 hours in total!
I suspect HP tweaked the BIOS so that the fan would give extra cooling to the defective Nvidia 'chip' thereby prolonging the life of the machine over the 12 months.
My laptop motherboard actually failed halfway through this BIOS update!
As you already know HP total care were not in the slightest bit interested. I was given the usual basis trouble shooting runaround & then asked to give them $400 for the 'temporary' repair.
Currently my laptop is being fitted with a replacement motherboard by an independent computer repairer located in Lisbon.
Initially they informed me that the repair would be completed in 15 working days.
Three months later they have informed me that it is now ready for collection.
(I suspect that these new defective replacement motherboards are in very short supply for obvious reasons.
Unfortunately I am now in the UK & will have to make a special trip to Portugal to collect this !
After my laptop prematurely failed I wrote a letter to Mark Hurd & several months later I have not had the courtesy of a reply.

Arggg! I to own a HP TX1000 that is about 2 months out of warranty and this morning when I tried to turn it on just goes to the black screen. If i turn it on and off like 40 times it will start up. This however is getting longer and longer.... the first time i only had to turn it on and off 3 times.

The problem also started with the wifi intermitantly dropping out.

I rang HP and they said its out of warranty send it to the service centre and pay to have it fixed.

Im not doing that as Its just throwing good money after bad for a defective product. I now own a expensive brick.

I wonder how many complaints it takes before they agree that there is a fault with the machine and extend the warranty.

I just talked to a case manager. They are not going to fix them. Don't waste your time. Apparently there is a line of tx1000's that was made at a certain point in time that they will fix. Since mine is newer (mind you it still has the exact same problems as the old line), they will not fix it. It makes no sense. Don't waste your $400 getting a new motherboard when it's probably just going to go out again.

Having the same black screen of death. Looking through the thread i'm discouraged. Mine started with wifi issue, and progressively became worse with the black screen.

same response from HP. for 400 they are willing to fix it.

Doing some homework on this, however, i have some thoughts. The xbox 360 had some similar issues. this was sourced back to the type of solder that was being used. It would crstalize with heat fluxuations, and over time would become pronounced to give a death screen

some people would heat the box... put it under blankets and such. this would evidently melt the solder and eliminate the crystals

seeing the comment from the "pillow" comment. this would make sense.

I heard a rumor that HP makes all the motherboards for a product run at the same time... so the replacements will have the same issue after a similar period. idk if this is truth or not.

Hello guys,

My Tx1000 just died on me and now all it does is power on and display a blank screen. I’ve tried a number of things myself and nothing seems to work.

I do know that before it died two things happened:

I had been downloading some stuff and the laptop was running for a good two hours and the cpu fan was on and the laptop was blowing out hot air. After my download I turned off the laptop to have dinner, when I came back and turned it on the first thing I saw was the whole screen turn white. At this point I had to remove the battery to reboot and that’s when the blank screen showed up and it’s been this way for the past few days.

Hey timAvi, I’m wondering if your idea about the problem being a heat issue is correct. I’m tempted to try it as I don’t want to fork out $400 for a new motherboard.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Hi Guys,

I am using a tx1209au, and i had a same problem as everyone else three weeks back. After trying to boot for like thousand times, i figured out that if you touch the touchpad during the intial startup (as soon as you switch on the power button), it boots every time.

I am not sure if this solution will work on every model but it has been working on mine till date. My guess would be a faulty capacitor which is not discharging properly. And these charges are preventing the booting which explains why touching the touchpad discharges it.

Hope it was helpful.

Cheers,
Paras

Hey all,

Well guys I have an update. I followed timAvi's instructions and you won't believe this, but it worked. The blank screen disappeared and it ran first time I turned it on.

I wrapped my laptop in a towel and let it run for about 45 minutes. The laptop never did power off but the bottom of the laptop was hot to the touch.

I then turned it off and let it cool for another 45 minutes until the bottom of the laptop was cool to the touch.

I then turned it on and it ran no problem.

My guess is that timAvi is right and it's a heat issue with the cpu.

Currently I switch my laptop to powersave mode in Vista to hopefully keep the laptop cpu from getting hot. I'm also running my laptop on a laptop cooling mate to keep the temperature down.

Looks like the key to this whole problem is maintaining the laptop temperature. I'm going to see if there's software on the internet I can get to monitor my laptop's temperature.

I'll keep you guys posted of my progress.

Best of luck to you all,

Update...

Hey guys,

Just started to run some temperature test and would like to get some feedback from you guys.

So far I'm running two software packages to monitor my laptop temp:

Speedfan
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

and

CoreTemp
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

My dual Core X2 are running around 46C and my GPU is running at 65-67C. I think 46C is fine for the Core X2, but I don't know much about GPU temperatures and I think 65-67C isn't too bad.

I'm also running the laptop with the cooling mate as well.

Any feedback on GPU temperature would be greatly appreciated.

I talked with HP about this issue.

The discussion turned to the why it happens instead of what they will do about it.

allegedly the problem is in the connection of the nvidia card to the motherboard. A solder issue is likely.

the same video card is used without issue in other applications... so it is a problem with manufacture at the HP end of things.

The heating liquifies the solder sufficiently to make alleviate the issue, however i was warned that it can damage other parts that are heat sensitive.

A soldering gun at the nvidia connection was suggested... and stressed that this is NOT recommended.

Keep looking at the recall lists was the only other advice i was given.

Good Luck all... and, as for me, i dont feel comfortable with a solder gun.

Thanks TimAvi. After having this laptop die in October, I was suprised that your solution actually worked. But when you think aboutit, it makes sense. It's really too bad that HP has decided NOT to acknowledge the problem but. I have 3 daughters in school and obviously, my tx1000 laptop that needs to be replaced. If they're charging $400 to repair the problem, that means its actually costing them maybe $200. If they would have repaired my unit for free, I would have stayed loyal and baught at least 4 more HP laptops over the next few years.

Hello,

Stage 1:
I am having the same problem as everyone on this thread. I got the tx1000z 13 months ago with a 12 month warranty. A few months after getting it I would lose my wireless connection. I did some research at the time and determined that it would be a waste of time trying to get it fixed, besides I had an Ethernet connection handy so I just used that.

Stage 2:
Last night I shut off my computer after a normal day's use. I went to bed a happy man not realizing that when I would wake up in the morning my computer wouldn't start. I pressed the power button to turn it on then went downstairs for some breakfast like I do every morning. Only this time when I came back upstairs I saw the computer had all the lights on, but a black screen. I did a hard shutdown and attempted to restart the computer, but this time it wouldn't start at all. Upon pressing the power button the lights flashed but nothing stayed on this time. So basically MY COMPUTER IS DEAD.

I have been reading these posts and it looks like HP has made a mistake but will not take responsibility for it. I could understand if a few computers here and there have problem, but it seems like hundreds, if not thousands, of people have the EXACT same problem.

Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Solutions Center.

This is in response to your e-mail regarding your HP Pavilion tx1001AU Notebook PC.

Firstly, I truly apologize for the delay and regret the inconvenience caused.

From the information provided in the e-mail, I understand that the Notebook is not booting and having a hardware issue just it after the warranty got expired.

David, we completely understand your concern and we do value your information and feedback; Unfortunately these things do happen to any electrical/electronic goods/products at any given point of time though each and every product is Quality tested by HP before releasing in to the market; Among various other factors, the Operation of Notebook does depend upon the user who is handling the Notebook and the environmental conditions it is subjected to, which I believe certainly does not seem to be in your case. In order to overcome such issues HP had introduced Carepacks or extended warranty, the benefits of which are immense in these unforeseen/unpredictable cases.

I can realize that your Notebook requires major spare replacement (system main board). The link provided by you is not getting opened at our end. Further, I regret there is no HP advisory or HP limited warranty under which the issue can be covered. If one Notebook having such issue is covered then we shall be happy to cover for all Notebooks of the same model/family. If you find any HP Document to validate your claim, then we can action on the same. HP Forums or any third party site is not valid in such cases. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site.

Please get back to us if you need any further technical assistance and we will be more than glad to assist you.

Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Solutions Center.

I was wondering if the people who have had there tx1000 fixed after an expired warranty have any letters or documentation from HP stating that they were going to be fixed even though the warranty was expired.

So I had the same issue that everyone has with the laptop screen just being blank, by the way I have a tx1000. So I decided to do wrap the laptop in a towel and let it run and I have to say it worked somewhat.

Basically I just turned it on and of course got the blank screen, then I wrapped it in a towel and left it alone. When I came back to it, it had turned off so turned it on and sure enough it booted to windows.

Now I say somewhat because I am still having the issue where the screen goes weird and displays a bunch of what I can describe as static(similar to a TV). Sometimes I can use it for an hour and it will show up and sometimes as soon as windows loads, it's very unpredictable.

When I do a forced shutdown then the first problem appears again(the blank screen problem) and again I just wrap it in a towel and it works again.

What I have found out is that if I let the laptop shutdown by itself when I have the blank screen, I can start it up normally, the wrapping it in a towel just seemed to be coincidental.

So some you could just try that.

Same problem here. Several days ago the broadcom wireless card just vanish from the device manager. Sometimes the device manager detect sometimes not. I already send this pavillion tx1320 back to hp 2 times before the warranty expire. I have other notebook half the price never have this kind of problems. Anyone sent the CEO an email regarding this problems to have this tx1000 family recalled? It seems to be a device or manufacturing defect. I talked to hp support but the pavillion tx1000 family is not on list of recall. I buy the tablet pc back in november 2007.

I also bought my tx1320us on November 2007. My computer was not booting up for exactly a year, but still under the 12month warranty. It seems that they replaced my whole screen for a brand new one, but did not include anything specifying what they had done. One week before Christmas, my computer was not booting up again and my warranty has expired! I kept on telling the online chat that I had just gotten my laptop fixed from them and 3 weeks later I am having the same problem. They kept on saying that my warranty has expired, and they could not do anything about it. I finally got through to them after I had given my case number for the first repair since the symptoms were the same, they gave me a box to send it in. My laptop has been working for a month now. Try to get the laptop insured by your home insurance if possible because its a lot cheaper than extending the warranty from HP.

I had the same problem on my TX1000 - the lights would come on, fans would start, but no display and no startup. I was unsure about the method of wrapping it in a towel and letting it heat up to fix the problem, but I was desperate enough to try anything. Sure enough, it worked! I am writing this response on my TX1000 and am very happy that someone found a fix for this issue.

I recived this replay from compu-genie, inc.
when ask them if they can fix it:

"Yes we are aware of the problem since we repair from 5 to 10 of those boards daily, they will last the time they have too and the video chip needs to be replaced, resoldering like you said will not last too long or not work at all. Repair cost for motherboard is $110.00 + $10.00 shipping."

I, too, have just received this problem. I have a Pavilion tx1219us entertainment tablet PC. I didn't have the issue with the wireless card but I went to turn it on 3 days ago and a couple lights come on for a few minutes and then it shuts off. I bought it over 2 years ago so no chance of a warranty. I'm currently in the process of trying the towel wrapping method. I'll report back if it worked or not.

Alright, my first round of the "towel method" didn't work but for some reason my laptop isn't getting very hot at all. The fan is going and there is a little heat coming from it but it is only warm, not hot. I have it wrapped in a towel and I let it run for over an hour. Anyone have any ideas to why other people's laptops would get real hot doing this but not mine?

Update: I tried the towel trick again and it got hotter but I am still getting the lights and fan on and then off. I did the online chatting thing with an HP tech support and did all of his suggestions to no avail. I called HP tech support to see if I could maybe "intimidate" them a little but nope, they offered me the paid tech support and told me it could cost me $400 (a third of what I paid) to fix it. I, of course, declined. I just emailed the CEO like a few of you had suggested and I guess I will see what happens. I don't know what to do. That laptop was my lifeline for school and I certainly don't have enough money to repair or replace it. I don't know what to do.

I have been having the same issues here as everyone else. I originally posted here in December. As an update to my issue, my laptop has been booting up without any issue for the past 2 months, wireless still does NOT work and now having a new issue: the system no longer sees the built in webcam--states there is no camera device installed. What a POS this thing is, and the fact that it runs Vista is salt in the wound. HP should take care of this

Jeffx,
Did you do anything to get your computer to boot up? I did finally get the "towel" trick to work but it only booted once. Also, I've always had the webcam issue. The problem with that (so I've read) is very common. HP doesn't recognize that problem either. I actually gave up on the webcam. If I could just get mine to boot, I would be happy.

?Does anyone else believe we need a tally of #'s, issues, and links to demonstrate the rapidly-growing scale of our community of HP BSOD brick owners?

Suggestion: ?How about we do a HP BSOD WILL NOT BOOT WIKI to transparently, publicly summarize this issue and enable HP to do the right thing? Let's keep it to the facts - and the facts will include tracking of HP response, or lack thereof.
A table of raw data would enable some analytical sorting. Some suggested parameters are listed at the bottom of this post.

My tx1320us Bover won't boot since Thursday Jan 12th (can't blame it on Friday the 13th). Also ~3 months beyond yr warranty.

Bover will start to power up, and hang about 2 seconds in, totally blank screen. Because he hits idle so soon, I don't think he's creating enough heat for the towel trick to work. Interesting. I'll try it again.

Question for those who have had success with the towel trick - ?How long (~ seconds) was your boot process running with blank screen? ?Was it booting (longer than 2 seconds) and just the NVIDIA chip was not serving the screen?

?Is it possible that we could be experiencing similar blank screen symptoms, with some caused by NVIDIA chip solder failure, and some from corrupt BIOS, with bootup snagging at (or before) the graphics chip?

A week before Bover totally stopped saying hello, he went to a white screen, and wouldn't respond, so I did a hard power down, and then experienced the same 2 second no-boot. After (eventually)pulling the battery out/back in and hitting esc during boot, i was able to get in and disable auto-startup of an external hard drive that I had just installed. 'Thought that Bover was just looking in the wrong place (to the external HD) for boot instructions because then he worked for another week.

Just one day before Bover passed, he wouldn't boot. Same symptoms, except the lightning icon LED was lit. I took it to a store carrying current HP tablet, and plugged it into their floor model power. Verified that my adapter was fried. So I bought a 'universal' adapter for $150 to try to get back to work. ?Will the notebook overheating cause the adapter to fail also?

Within 24-hours, Bover again refused to boot.

Another possible factor was that a windows update failed and reversed itself (maybe not completely? ) ~2 weeks prior to apparently final boot failure.

List of things I've tried w-o success:

Take out battery for a day. Drained residual power by holding the power button on.

Kept battery out, using adapter only.

Replaced the CMOS battery
Holding all arrow keys down to reset CMOS.

Took hard drive out. Bought an adapter and verified that the hard drive works. A huge relief that. Note: one must first remove the male to male pin adapter from the hard drive to reveal the SATA pins that fit the 2.5" female SATA adapter.

Tried the following with and without the HD inserted.

Holding F11 down during boot
Rapidly tapping F11 during boot

Holding F10 down during boot
Rapidly tapping F10 during boot

Holding F1 down during boot
Rapidly tapping F1 during boot

Holding F2 down during boot
Rapidly tapping F2 during boot

Holding Esc down during boot
Rapidly tapping Esc during boot

Holding Fnc + B down during boot
Rapidly Windowskey + B during boot

Spitting epithets at Bover.

(I'm not aware of problems with my wireless (constant use) or CD/DVD (rare use) - just the BSOD).

Some parameters for an HP BSOD - WILL NOT BOOT WIKI raw data table: model, wikiusername, purchase date, first BSOD date, last successful boot date, boot duration before hang (seconds), boots and works with external monitor (Y/N/--), boots after towel wrap (Y/N/--), Boots from Vista Recovery Disc, Key combinations ___that __ ,HP support suggestions, Fixed!(4now), Temp Fix, but BSOD again after X days, Adapter replaced, Motherboard replaced, Repair cost...

I'm experiencing these same exact symptoms; idling at start up and never coming out of it. It's like the computer is mashed up in a coma and just remains inactive. What a waste.

So what i did was I e-mailed the CEO of the company like stated previously on this post. I talked to this Gal and she explained a few things to me about how my warranty expired and what not. Then i convinced her to send me a box to ship my computer out and they would check/fix and or tally any problems that they find on my computer(however i declined the $400 dollars she said they would charge to possibly fix the issue).

Anyways, as of Feb, 23, 2009 i am still waiting for some word of my recently diseased tx1000 laptop.

Good luck all.

My tx1301au died on me on feb12th 2009. My warranty expired on Dec 29th 2008. My motherboard had already been replaced once on Nov 25th 2008.

HP india quotes 39,000rs (~800$) . They say Motherboard and Display are screwed.

HP india doesnt seem to give a damn about the 90 day replacement policy which is clearly shown on the website screen shot -http://twitpic.com/1nx43/full

I am stuck speaking to tech support who earlier guided me to send the laptop for repair and told me motherboard would be replace for free since it comes under the 90 days period and a week later they send me a quote.

They say the clause been updated to 30 days now. But clearly website says otherwise and tech support also told me it was 90 days. few days later tech support calls back after speaking to service engineer and manager to say he was wrong and sorry. But website still says otherwise. Who do i trust ? Twist the rules to suit yourself , thats HP for you.

GOOD NEWS FRIENDS!!!!

If you read my previous post you would know that i have been experiencing the same problems as many of my fellow brothers. We have been heard friends, our calls for help have been answered.

After e-mailing and have several phone conversations with our friends over at the CEO department of HP they were content with next-day shipment of a box to ship my broke tx1000.

Within about 2 days i got an e-mail saying that they had found the problem(defected motherboard) and were fixing it NO CHARGE and would air ship it out the next day.

I am very happy to say the least and so is my wallet.

I want to commend HP for such wonderful customer service and would like thank the people here on this forum for their inputs.

P.S.

I made sure when i shipped out the unit that i included a letter of all my e-mails to HP as well as formal letter discussing the problem in detail.

I wish you all the best of luck in this matter.

Same Problem with TX1232LA.

More new information:

Sometimes when it boots the display looks like tv snow. If I can make it to boot again in safe mode there is normal video. I also could make it boot into linux and use the NVIDIA driver from their site and use to work but not anymore only text console. Problems when loading the NVIDIA driver at Xwindow start.

So I guess it could be the driver also, because in Windows Vista Safe Mode the display driver is vga and in linux text console is vga too.

But now not booting. Tricks to make it boot do not work anymore.

And yes, I was shutting down my laptop on and off to get it going until finally the blank screen finally appeared and stayed blank. I have purchased a cooling mate just a couple of days ago because my laptop was over heating for sometime already.

Thanks timAvi and ST

The e-mail they sent you, was it specifically for your laptop or for all tx1000's? Also, don't get too excited yet. When they change the motherboard, they usually put in the same defective type of board again, so your computer is likely to fail in the near future. Good luck though and keep us posted.

I own a TX1110us model and I feel a bit lucky for not encountering the issues you guys faced yet (but will be soon I believe). However, I have trouble with charging the battery. There is no electronic coming to the battery at all. The charge light isn't on and the battery icon shows that there is no charging. Is it the problem with the battery or motherboard? Is there anyway to test it? and will HP do any recall on this model?

TX1000 Owners do not give up on your laptop just yet!!!

I too have a TX1000 with the blank screen booting problem and
yes the blanket trick worked for me as well. The only problem was
I had to wrap it in a blanket each time I wanted to use it. For me
it was a short term fix. The main issue, as we all know, is heat build
up inside the case. The link below is for a modification of the TX1000
cooling solution. Basically it invovles disassembling the unit, replacing
the crappy thermal compound HP used on the CPU and GPU and replacing it
with Artic Silver 5. Then removing the black paint from the cooling fins
of the heatsink to allow the heat to dissipate more efficiently. The black
paint was put on by HP for cosmetic reasons and really impedes the heatsink's
ability to remove heat from the CPU/GPU. I took the solution one step further
and, when the laptop was disassembled, drilled 12 (1/4") vent holes in the metal
bottom of the latop right where the CPU fan is located. After doing this modification
I had to do the blanket trick 2 more times, and have not had to do it since.
With the modifacations I made, the heatsink is way more effiecent at removing
heat from the CPU/GPU and now the heat has even more ways of exiting the case.
The long and the short of it is, the PC now runs way cooler than it ever did and
boots every single time. The only downside is that you'll have to stick a vacuum
cleaner over the vent holes you drilled every 3 months or so to remove any build up
of dust. Taking the Laptop apart is realively straight foward and I have included a
link for that as well. Just make sure you keep track of which screws go where.
Also, take your time with the 2 cables attached to the motherboard using the ZIF
connectors. The connectors need to be released in order to get the cable out.
I feel this is a better option than having HP replacing my motherboard because, they
are just going to replace it with the same sub standard cooling solution and hence,
I'll have this exact problem again in a year or so.

I kept calling HP a few times per week for the last several months and asking to to be assigned to another case manager or have the case escalated to an executive case manager. Finally on March 9th, I received a call from Devin Else, an executive case manager. He politely kept insisting that the offer of half off the repair cost that the previous case manager I was assigned to (Brenda) had offered me was more than reasonable, and I politely kept insisting that I did not agree since others with the same problems with their out of warranty HP tx1000 had been offered repair at no cost by HP.

After about a half hour of this and him trying to troubleshoot some issues with the laptop (which didn't work since it wouldn't reboot correctly of course), he finally offered 70% off the repair for a cost of $128.05 with tax (as opposed to the full cost of $398.00 plus tax). I accepted on the condition that this cost be waived / refunded when the HP techs start their work and see that these are the same problems that everyone else is experiencing.

Having HP replace the motherboard with a new one is useless if the new motherboard employs the same flawed cooling design. I figured, if it takes me a few hours to try the CPU mod fix and it works, then great. If not, then the laptop is still dead and I have lost nothing. The laptop cost me $1500 cnd, so I couldn't just throw it out without trying the fix myself. I'm glad I did because the laptop has been running flawlessly ever since.

This modification addresses the issue of blank screen boot ups that we all seem to be having problems with. If your laptop is completely dead, no lights what so ever when you try to turn it on, then you have an issue with the laptop's power supply and that will need to be fixed first. If you were having issues with the blank screen boot up prior to the laptop dying, then this modification should fix that problem after you get your power supply problems sorted.

Hello. After 15 months of purchase, my HP TX1000z has been having a lot of issues. First the wireless card stopped working. A week later I could not connect to my TV via the S-video, there would be no display on my TV. A couple of weeks after that, my laptop would not start the first time I pressed the power button. All the indicator lights would turn on but I would get a blank screen and now my HP TX1000z does not even turn on.
HP is not willing to accept that there is a manufacturing problem with this laptop, they keep telling me that this is an isolated incident. HP needs to recall this line and replace it with a new laptop.

This same problem occurred to my backup laptop which was an acer.. thinking i was out of luck since my hp tx1000 is still stuck on the black screen.... i thought it was over, but i found a fix for the acer
it involved downloading a bios update and loading it from a bootable flash drive,
i did it manually by holding function escape and the power button and it loaded the new bios onto the laptop .... rebooted itself and voila now my acer laptop works ...

I wonder if this is the same problem with the hp, i.e. the bios changing and messing up... it may be possible to do the same on the HP ...

This is just un-acceptable that a one year old computer is having hardware failure. Just another example of profit maximization without responsibility by HP. I bought a tx1320 and suggested my sister and girlfriend buy one. Both did and because HP is a smart corporation, I am sure they know statistically speaking, which parts will die near or after warranty expiration in the aggregate and make them more money (since not all clients will contest a 300$ repair charge). However there is a problem with this. It is irresponsible and unjust. I have worked as legal counsel for various engineering and manufacturing firms and I am sure a company as large as HP has extensive design validation testing and they know within a statistical range how long parts from suppliers will last within a median range of usage. My screen has gone blank and I am sure it is the same problems other customers are having. They should be paying the clients for our lost productivity and frustration with their products. I am going to mail this letter to the CEO.On top of that if you call HP support right now their phone system is down and they'll tell you to call back later. Just because a company has larger aggregate market share, and inelastic demand from clients, does not mean they cannot have a way for clients to get phone support, even when a system is being upgraded. If anyone else has had success in getting HP to replace this unit and defective parts please email me as well.
Sincerely,

So the interesting thing is that I have tried windows vista, xp and ubuntu on my tx1320us and in both vista and xp I see the same flashing light everyone is talking about. However, in ubutntu, it works perfectly! Software issue. HP will never be able to fix is for good until they debug the software issue.

hi plainjay,

I am running ubuntu and xp on a tx1209au but problem arises before the OS is even loaded. It doesnt boot up to a point where is gives me a choice between the os. so its unlikely its a software issue.

Hi guys,

Like i told earlier i faced motherboard issue for the second time and this time one month after warranty . Since it was only two months since my motherboard had been replaced , i mailed the ceo and also told them the were supposed to replace my motherboard as it was under 3 months that a spare part was replaced and that comes under their terms.

Finally they agreed to replace it last month and it got the laptop today. They said i needed to replaced the diplay also and it would cost me 25000. I told them its highly unlikely that the display and motherboard both conk at the same time and i dont trust their diagnosis. I told them to replace motherboard and give me proof on external display. But like i had guessed, as soon as the motherboard was replaced the display magically started working (Very poor diagnosis by HP!) Thus i saved myself from paying for the display. Motherboard was replaced for free.

Although the guy said the motherboard wont screw up again cos it the latest. I am taking no chances and going for an extended warranty. This is my 3rd motherboard in just 14 months of usage and yet HP wont accept that there is a problem with it!! Very SAD!

My TX1040ea is about 1,5 years old if I am not wrong…I do not remember…I bought it in Spain and the price was more then 1000 Euros….after a couple of month the wifi did not work anymore and I bought a external Linksys USB card….last year in september I get a black / blank screen….I had no time to send it to customer support…I needed urgently a new laptop and bought an Acer Aspire 8920 (a very big one) and also a little one Aspire One for travelling….and forgot about my TX1000 – TX1040….I thought: What can I do? Calling support didn’t help really….
I read the message from timAvi (wrap it in a towel) and started laughing…it sounded to funny – unbelievable…and asked my self “What may I loose” and wrapped it a towel….it was not getting very hot, so I put tape on the ventilation slots and waited about one hour….the laptop didn’t switched off – but it was already very hot so I decided to switch it off to avoid that the towel starts to burn :-p – I did not wait and switched it on again and you may believe me: IT WORKS.

If somebody from the support would say “Hey, wrap it in a towel” I would think “Where is the hidden camera”….but it worked for this model….

I thought: If timAvi’s advise would not work: I will destroy this laptop in my fireplace and doing a video of it and upload it to Youtube and send the ash to the CEO…but it worked….I thought: Tim was just joking – but I had nothing to loose.

Of course I will still buy products of HP – but only printers. The missing support of HP is awful so we decided in our company not to buy HP anymore if we may avoid it (printers are an exception). My old HP6915 mobile phone was now replaced by and Nokia E90 – and all HP computers we have will be replaced as soon as the will not work anymore.

Thanks to timAvi – this was a great advise and thanks to you my 10 year old daughter has now a fancy laptop – but me and my company is tired of HP. There are a lot of other companies….I will not miss HP.

Best Regards

I talked to HP today and the agent said that HP is in the process of looking at the TX1000 series laptop to see if there is any issues. She also said that there is the known issue of the blank screen and HP is look into it. She also said that if more people post on the threads and send emails to the CEO, it will increase the chances of them issuing a recall.

Hi: Pretty much same issue here. About a 15 month old tx1000 that started going wonky with irregular start-ups and now has died completely. Lights are on but nobody's home.
Extremely unfortunate situation as I am responsible for purchasing equipment for my organization and I've recently ordered a new HP laptop and desktop. I've got my fingers crossed and after reading through this, and other, forums will definitely be going for extended warranties.
We run HP servers, which I have been happy with, and I was considering shifting all of our desktop and laptop purchases to HP products based on the success I have had with the servers. Now I am concerned about, not only the reliability of the products, but also the lack of response to what seems quite clearly to be a design fault.
I am sending the laptop in to see what they may do about it and my future purchases will depend on the results.

My tx1120us will not bootup at all, the lights will come on but the boot will not proceed beyond several seconds. My Wifi card dissappeared about a month ago and a random person I met in a coffee shop told me the entire computer would soon fail. I should have returned it immediately! I was about to leave for vacation and thought I still had time on my warranty so I waited until I got back. Within a couple of days of returning, and one week after the warranty expired, it died.

Customer support passed the buck and told me to send it in and that it would cost me. This is extremely dissappointing considering the defect is well known.

I'm having the exact same issues with this computer, unfortunately mine is out of warranty (13 months "more or less"), i don't have the model number right now, but i will send and email to HP complaining about this issue like everybody here, as soon as possible...

The problem for me is that right now i'm living in MEXICO, and the computer was purchased in USA, however if i can get a good answer from HP, i will gladly pay for the shipment myself...

P.S. The reason i bought a computer in USA and risked to bring it to MEXICO, was that HP is a reliable brand......

This all sounds very similar to what I've been going through for the last couple of weeks. I've got a 16 month old tx1420us tablet running vista home premium which often fails to complete the boot up process whether it's a cold boot or a wake up from the sleep state.

When turned on, the normal array of indicator lights flash on and remain on. The hard drive activity light flashes three times and then goes dark, the fan runs briefly and then goes quiet. The screen remains blank. The speaker and wifi lights remain orange (indicating off)the other indicator lights are the normal blue. The machine will remain in that zombie state until powered off by holding the power switch for 5 seconds. It will boot up normally about 1 out of 5 or 6 tries.

Whom at HP should we be emailing?

Hi everybody, here we go. I got the same blank screen problem on my Tx1000 about 2 months ago, And my WIFI is dead as well, I had it for 2 years. And I purchase the recovery disc about a month ago. Try to install it 20 times so far. still can't get it install. because while it install, it has to auto reboot, and the back screen problem don't let it reboot, I have to reboot it myself like 4 or 5time after. And since that happen, the vista can't finish the reinstallion step right. I tried all different way none of it work... Anybody can help???

Good news!!! I got a phone call two days ago from the HP Case Management Department they call it TCO. anyway, she refunded the money I paid for the By phone Tech. support, right away. They are really nice and helpful, After the 10mins chat. She often me 50%off or replacing the motherboard which is about $220 since my laptop is out of warranty, but she give me a really awesome advise that if I have any recepit or bank statment to proof that I purchased the with in 2008. Then it will be a different story, which wo keep any recepit older than a year now days. I ended up call them back today and tell them my story and she accpet it and often me a one time only free repair my motherboad. Which I have never expect that eventhou my laptop is amost A year and half old. But well, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to fix,so. Will c what happen! But people out there, Please don't give up. email the CEO and wait for the TCO contact u back is the way to go!

Same problem here for me.

This is pretty lame.

They want $398 for repairs

If any of ya'll are up for making HP pay more attention to the issue

1. Continue doing what they suggested for writing the CEO BUT take it one step further

2. If theres anyone in here whose knowledgeable in the PR world...you'll know that build up a campaign to raise awareness about the issue gets results fast

3. One of the best ways is to build up traffic on a well read blog i.e TechCrunch, CNET, or other computer blogs and get them to publicize this problem on tablet PCs--

4. Interesting topic or articles to write about and publicize: the cheap motherboards used in HP computers, how their customer service doesn't 'care' to service "out of warranty customers", how overheating of laptop computers can be dangerous, how HP computer motherboards last for about 2 years MAX on average, how it costs $99 just to have people diagnose a problem, and how HP will take no responsibility for the problem, pretty much anything you can think of

5. There are many other fine companies that probably use parts as cheap as HP--but they do run a slick ad campaign. Maybe we can hit them where it hurts...OR at least get them to get us a fair deal when it comes to repairs

My tx1000 worked fine for about 2 years and it suddenly went blank last Friday May 1st. It can't boot. I've recently upgraded to IE 8 in April, and system seems doing fine.

After all usual attempts,I had to resort to extreme measure: remove battery, put notebook in freezer for 15 min, let it come back to room temperature, wipe out all moisture...notebook came back to life.

I suspect that hp tx.... series cooling is very much underdesigned as cooling fans are working very hard and notebook skin temperature is quite warm. I'll be placing notebook on a stand so that better cooling area is available.

...not recommending hp tx series for future purchase.

I was so excited to get this laptop. And for about a year it was awesome!

And then almost a year after I bought it, it wouldn't boot. It had the exact same problem so many of you have had. I ended up having to send it back to HP. They fixed it for me and sent it back. I purchased the extended warranty.

Now here we are...six months later. Now I'm having the other problem everyone else is having; my wifi adapter is GONE. I'm facing having to send it back again. I am just thankful I extended the warranty.

It's obviously a flaw in the design of these notebooks. The problem seems to exist because they overheat and damage the motherboard. Why doesn't HP recall the tx1000 series? You cannot honestly tell me that they don't realize that this is SUCH a widespread problem. A 5 second internet search resulted in MANY people facing this issue.

I mean...does anyone have this laptop and NOT have this problem??

My update -

Similar results to others.. I quickly escalated my complaints to a Case Manager, who then offered to give me a 50% discount on a new motherboard. Obviously, this was not an adequate offer for me, and so I refused. I could not get any info out of her regarding the possibility of a recall in the future.

I find it ridiculous that they would consider a 50% discount a fair compromise. Why would I pay hundreds of dollars (even with the discount) to "correct" a problem motherboard by replacing it with an exact same motherboard, which of course will have the same problems down the road? If I were to replace it, this would be the FOURTH motherboard on my machine. That averages out to be one motherboard every four months. They want me to pay for that kind of quality?

I'm not sure what my next actions should be yet, but I am definitely not done with my complaints.

I'm a student and I work a lot to be able to afford this computer !!!
I lost my wireless and my screen is black !!!
I have papers and research paper in it !!! How am I going to graduate ??

This customer service hang up on me !!!
They had to fix their mistake so here's what I send them :

Hi,

I'm writing you because I'am VERY VERY VERY upset. You sold me a defective computer. I have the notebook tx1000 for 2 years now and it's been a while now that my wireless stoped suddenly working and now my screen is black also.

I went to Staples today to see if they could fix it for me and they said that it costs 370 dollars to get it fixed and 100 dollars to have my info back.

I'm student and I worked for 6 months to get this computer !!! I dont see why I should pay because your computer doesnt work. It never felt or never had water on it !!!

The guy in Staples laughed when he saw my computer, I only told him about the screen and he said I was the fourth one already that came for the same problem and told me some people were even losing their wireless, before I told him about mine !!!!!!!!!!!!

I also went onto forum and you should take a look at that http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1242776141567+28353475&threadId=1245319

and if you google it you could find a lot of them !!!

People paid for a service and give them defective material !!!
I propose that you take back my computer and fix it for free or give me a new one where you'll get all the info because of you because I dont have to pay for your mistakes.

I'm VERY upset, I trusted HP !!!

BTW your customer service is bad. They hang up on me !!! Relpy fast please !!!

what do you say ???
They should repay !!!

Mine died twice. The first time was under warranty. Now they're offering 50% off to fix it. I told the case manager (Dominic) that was not acceptable and asked to speak to his supervisor so I could escalate it.

He said that the case managers at his level were as far as I could escalate. But apparently you can go to at least the executive case manager (according to an earlier post).

I also asked him if he was familiar with the problems (overheating, etc) that TX1000s were having. He said no.

I purchased a Pavilion tx1000z in May of 2007, and I should have known it would be full of problems when the "p" key fell off the keyboard soon after its arrival.

My network card disappeared 1 month after my 1 year warranty expired. I chatted with the online support person, and was told that my network card needed to be replaced. I ordered a replacement card from the HP parts store, which took 2 months to arrive. Upon installation, the new card also was not recognized. I plugged in my Ethernet cable and sadly went along with the handicapped system.

Two months later, I started running into two separate booting issues. About 66% of the time, when I slide the on switch, the hard drive light will blink 3 times, followed by absolutely nothing. The other 34% of the time, it will blink the full 8 times, and boot. Unfortunately, when it reaches the windows logo, the screen is distorted the rest of the way. When I plugged in an external monitor, the exact same distorted image was on both screens. Another issue is that when it hibernates, sleeps, or powers down the screen, it will never turn back on without re-starting.

For temporary fixes, if I hit F8 when it actually gets that far, the computer is sometimes able to boot up in safe mode. Sometimes, low screen resolution mode works as well.

I have tried the following fixes without success:
1)rebooting the system
2)unplug the system and remove the battery, then holding the on switch for 30 seconds
3)download new drivers for video card and wireless card
4)system restore
5)factory restore
6)re-seating ram

Why hasn't HP done anything to admit the faulty tx1000 series? I used to appreciate HP laptops, and would purchase another in the future if this were resolved appropriately. However, when I called their help center, their only answers were that they hadn't heard of this happening before, and that if I send them my laptop and $400, they could make it go away. For now, I've purchased a new laptop from a different manufacturer, and occasionally start up the tx1000z to see if miracles really do happen.

Be sure to check out the other forum full of others with the exact same problems too. :)

So, doing the math... If everyone got the $400 repair, that's an additional $92,000 for HP. If HP refunded all of us, that would be around $350,000. I wonder why this problem hasn't been recalled...

If the laptop lasts longer then a year, no one will purchase a new one. They at least get you for half a new one and are able to bring in $92,000 as opposed to $0.

They may get some money in the short run, but I imagine they'll lose a lot more in the long run.

I've had several PCs (including 2 laptops in addition to this doorstop) and printers (laser and inkjet) from HP. See, I used to work for HP and I had confidence in their products. Even to the extent of paying a bit more than similar products.

I have the same problem that everyone have with their TX1000.

I wrote a letter to the HP CEO and was later contacted by their Corporate Case Manager. I spoke with Angie Adams which basically told me that the laptop is out of warranty and they won't cover for any repair.

She also told me that there was no known defect or recall for the Tx1000 despite the hundreds of complaints. Google the word "tx1000" and it will pull out hundreds of identical complaints and or problems with this model/series.

Obviously, HP is denying that there are defects with the Tx1000 series - unless they consider a $1400 laptop to be DEAD after 12 months as NORMAL.

I believe that a company is only as good as it's product.
I'll be writing their CEO again later today to ask for a good reason why i should spend hard earned money on another HP product.

I think HP should take care of all of us who have had to shed hundreds of dollars to have our motherboards replaced after only 18+ months of ownership. My IT guys tell me that there is a circuit that overheats thus burns out the motherboard. This issue has been a thorn in my side. #1 i shelled out 1500 bucks for my HP TX1000, #2 18 months later and it takes a dive. So many people have posted comments on this site and many others.

Also for those of you who have had your motherboard replaced already, keep your receipts and the parts that went bad on your TX1000.

Hey Psyonic,

How did you get another CM? What exactly happened? And how far were you outside your warranty?

I just asked my CM (Dawn) to get it reassigned, and Dawn first claimed that there wasn't anybody available. And when I asked if I should just call back periodically to see if anybody was available, she then said there was no process for reassigning.

It just seems like they make stuff up as they go along.

Oh, and also, Darcie Fulkerson - when were you assigned the executive case manager?

My CM (Dawn) claims that ECMs were done away with about a year ago.

And you were re-assigned to different CMs at least two times. Dawn claims there is no process for re-assignment.

Can you tell me when you were reassigned? It doesn't have to be specific dates - just a general time frame (month and year).

How long was your PC out of warranty? Have you had the same problem before that was fixed in warranty?

Thanks. Just trying to get more info to try to convince my CM.

Hi All, I have red almost all the posts and we all have the same problem. Today I spoke to two Case Managers and none of them want to admit the problem with the HP TX1000. They are saying that we are 1% of the problem and there is nothing they can do. They also said not to believe what people are saying on this site. They are ridiculous. They are messing with us and with our money. Yeah, like people going to complain about it for nothing.
I don't know how some people were able to get box sent to them and get the computer fix for free. Who is that case manager that is able to help and fix computers? Please post the name and ext. #.

Here is a video link to how I fixed the HP tx1000 black screen/no power to LCD / boot problem. It works fine, if you're willing to do the work.

http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=399ede98-2b6f-44c7-9032-52c46962f20f

The jury is still out on the long-term effectiveness of the penny, though. Time will tell if the problem recurs. Make sure to use a penny which is older than 1982, so that it is made of 95% copper instead of zinc.

I too have the same problem which occurred around 15 months from purchase.

Just thought i would post in case HP look at this forum to get an idea of the scale of the problem. I have spoken to quite a few of their call centres and all i have been offered is the out of warranty repair. The most concerining part for me is that nobody seems to want to take details of the problem so that they can compile any data of how often this problem is occuring.

Yes I did get the same problem... first the WLan stopt working. Did buy new USB wireless adapter. Did be course the TX 1000 was still working most of the time .Then 2 days ago the computer did stop all together with the hard drive led come on for a couple of seconds. I did try all other solution but nothing did work. After reading some of the information in this forum I did do the blanket solution. The TX1000 did not got have really hot enough in a blanket so I used an electric blanket for 30 min. got the laptop out of the blanket and did try to boot. No luck the TX1000 was complete dead, so I did put it in the freezer for 10 min so the laptop could cool down.
Did boot again and the machine is working like new. Even the WLan is working again.
I know this is maybe a temperate solution, but so is replacing the motherboard at a high cost. I think if there replace you will get the same motherboard, with the errors associated with this board

May I thank the other user of this forum for there work in relation to this Lap, lets hope that’s HP will come with a solution for the TX 1000 in the near future.

I don't know how we can convince HP to repair our computers for FREE. The Case Managers are trying to deny any defects with the HP TX 1000. I don't know if they keep track of this forum or all of us who spent all of our money for Defected HP's. Like i said on a previous post, the CM told me not to believe what I read on this post because like he said it "anybody can write whatever they want". Which is insulting to all of us who is writing this post in order to get help for these defected HP's.

I came with idea which it might be one way to get the word around nationally and internationally about the problem HP is having with TX1000. They know the problem about he CPU being connected to the mother board causing it to overheat. Their ventilation system is not good. There is hardly any opening for the computer to ventilate. No matter if you buy extended warranty or not these computers should not stop working after 1-1 1/2 year.

I HAVE ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS BUT HAVE MANAGED TO KEEP MY HP TX1000 GOING.

1. KEEP IT COOL ALL THE TIME.
Buy a laptop fan. Shut it down instead of sleep/hibernating.

2. IF IT DOESNT TURN ON, OR BLANK SCREEN, OR JUST BLINKS FOR 1 SECOND THEN TURNS OFF DO THIS: Take the battery out, put it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Put the battery back in and attempt to power it WHILE RUBBING THE TOUCH PAD back and forth. Do this a few times and it will work.

3. WIRELESS DOESNT WORK
Cant seem to make this go away so I just bought a wireless usb adapter

4. TOUCH SCREEN DOESNT WORK
This is the least of my problems, it works sometimes after the freezer trick but I dont know really what to do.

IF YOU CALL HP THEY WILL CHARGE YOU 300-400 TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT IT WILL COME BACK SO DONT BOTHER. JUST DO THE ABOVE UNTIL YOUR SICK OF IT AND BUY A NEW ONE!

GOOD LUCK!

My laptop is doing the same thing. First is was the wireless card that disappeared and then the black screen. A HP certified tech told be that HP just made a product. I've letter after letter to Mark Hurd and the entire Board of Directors. After my lastest letter John (Case Manager) just called to discuss my issue. There is nothing that they are willing to do about this and he says that less than 1% of tablet owners have this problem. I didn't expect any kind of acceptable answer and I kindly told John to tell his supervisors that they have just lost one customer for life.

Wow this is amazing that I am not alone. I bought 2 of these computers the same day one for myself and one for my girlfriend. We've had these for about 18 months. Hers crapped out 2 months ago and mine just did the same.
It seems to turn on for about 2 seconds then the hard drive stops.....then nothing. lights still on but black screen. I had a tech friend that builds about a 1000 computers a year take out the hard drive and test the other removable coponents...says that the problem is the...............wait for the shocker......the motherboard. Exact same problem and what are the odds of 2 computers that I purchased? And the responce I get is you need to send it in so we can get more money from you.

The thing that annoys me most is that Sam said they claim its less than 1% of laptops having a problem (which even at 0.5% i think is too much. Thats 1 in every 200 laptops!) but when i have spoken to their call centres they never ask for any specific details of the problem or showed any inclination to log the fault. Presumably, what they mean is that less than 1% of laptops are returned to them for repair (along with the repair fee) which is a different statistic entirely!

I've been thinking that the 1% must apply to all tablet laptops they've made since early 2007. My friend has a tablet that is a later model than mine and his runs fine. I've resolved that HP will nothing about the problem and that i'm going to be forced to buy another computer.

My tx1000 got the same symptom, i.e., black screen with all lights on, fan running. I need to turn the laptop on and off nearly 20 times to get one time work. It is like a gambling every day morning when I try to use it.

HP has asked me to send the laptop back to them to evaluate how much needed to fix it. Let's see what they reply next.

Judging from the longer and longer thread here, I hope HP can give me a sincere help.

DONT JUST REPLACE THE BOARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

mine failed:
1. 2 months out of warranty
2. then six months later
3. THE FIRST DAY BACK FROM REPAIR
4. THE SECOND DAY BACK FROM REPAIR......

that's right, 4 BOARDS in under a year.
i am finally receiving a tx2z as a replacement through another warranty program but it took the same problem to fail
4 TIMES!!!

unfortunately i must say, don't spend any more money on replacement boards because it is NOT a fix.

has anyone replaced it more than 4 times???

When our daughter bought her TX1000 her network card went out. After returning it to HP 3 times it was fixed. Now 3 days ago the same issues as everyone has the laptop light come on, but nothing more. If you do a search on ebay for this model you will see a person who offers to repair your mother board due to a bad BGA chip. According to him on the E-bay site it is a known issue. The price is not too bad, but the issues still is on HP.

Add me to the list. This has to be freaking recalled soon.
Today my computer just died. Yes, at first it was the WLAN which did not work. It started to work one last time after I hibernated or restarted once. I then looked at solutions to get my WLAN back. One of the solutions was to reinstall the drivers using the Device Manager (not the install from hp.com). One day I saw the Wireless Switch in the Device Manager, the next day I did not. Yesterday, my computer was fine (with the fact that it didn't have the WLAN). Today it died on me... To be honest, I'm just a 16 year old kid that doesn't have money to keep investing on laptops. I'm still gracious that my old HP laptop works...It seems as if they were built better back in the days.
My dad is supposedly going to send it into a shop in Miami, Florida who will reflow the MotherBoard and fix everything for around 80 USD + shipping. They also include a 90 day warranty.

Man, wth?

I'm a HP tx2000 owner. Got mine in February 2008. It's almost been 1 1/2 years since I've owned my lil tablet. It started acting funny when the pointer kept jumping to the bottom right hand corner of the screen a couple months ago.

Now, today, I let my laptop hibernate as I traveled a short distance from campus to my house. I booted it back up, and the lights were on and the fan, but the screen was black. I called HP, and they wanted me to send it in for repairs for $400. I told them no. I tried the online tech, who took me thru basic troubleshooting, which didn't work. And, oh gee...just so happens my laptop is out of warranty. Just in time HP, right?

I see numerous complaints about the tx1z series, and there will probably be a buttload of tx2z complaints to come. Thanks HP!

I think I'm going to email the CEO.

I bought my tx1014us on January 2008 and guess what, same problem since April. Computer was having trouble boosting but I could still get it running upto two weeks ago.

We need a great number of people to make this work. One can not make the difference with this matter. Here it costs $500 to purchase the motherboad alone, that plus installment costs is just ridiculus. I have 2 HP printers, 3 notebooks and one desktop.

I just can't wait what customer service will tell me when I call.

HP charged $480 from my credit card without telling me. Following pls see my terrible experience after sending the problem TX1000 to HP service center.

A case manager name "Havia" suggested to send my TX1000 for a repair estimation (same symptoms as everybody reported here). I was kind of upset when he asked my credit card information. I finally gave it to him only after he repeatedly promised not to charge any money before getting authorization. However, 3 days later, I received my laptop with motherboard replaced. On the same day, I found a $480 transaction from my credit card to HP.

I called back to case manager "Havia", he replied with 2 most ridiculous logic I even seen,i.e., 1) according to him, because I have asked for an price estimation, I must have the intention to fix the product, so they fixed it for me and I should pay for it; when I refused it, he asked me to return the motherboard. I said "yes" and pls return my original motherboard. He told me it has been recycled. Then I questioned if he is going to return me a hollow laptop. Here comes his 2nd hooligan point, 2) He threatened to install other customer's faulty motherboard into my laptop and then return it back to me". I still cannot believe my ear.

More strange things happens when I complained this to HP customer relationship office. First, a very friendly representative name "Veronica" agreed to arrange when I requested to talk to the supervisor above case manager. However, next day, still the same case manager called me back with the same ill logic. When I called in customer relationship office for the 2nd time, a very rude representative name "Rose" directly told me they won't let me talk to the people who can supervise this delinquent case manager. What a customer relationship representative office!

I dont know why nobody listens to the people who have stated repeatedly that the problem IS NOT THE TX SERIES. The problem is in the tx1000 and tx2000 series. Look through all of the posts here and tell me if you see any at all from either the tx2500 or the tx2 series.

Also you must realize that the problem was with the graphics card not the mother board (sort of). Part of the n-vidia graphics card would get too hot which would overheat the motherboard right next door. Since then the tx2500 and the tx2 have been loaded with different graphics cards I think from a different maker even.

Now I realize some have had very bad customer service experiences with hp but it was not their part that was at fault(I know it still doesnt excuse them for the type of service that has been posted about). They also aren’t completely blameless for choosing to install bad graphics cards but they cant be blamed for the part being bad in itself.

All in all I believe in hp in producing a better product in the tx2z series and I will probably buy one soon (but with a slightly extended warranty just in case).

HP is responsible, FORD does not pass the blame when a suppliers belt brakes too early it is there fault for using the supplier.

A Laptop not abused should last past the warranty, These don't! If different things were happening to different people I would say this is a design flaw.

HP engineered this machine put in it the graphics they did. The graphics chip may be fine it may be HP engineered this laptop poorly. It may have to do with the shape of the case the power supply ect.

HP is responsible they should fix it.

Fully agree. HP should be taken full responsibility for this overheat caused motherboard or graphic card problems in everyone's tx1000 here. Every time, HP service center only asks us to pay for replacement of the faulty motherboard, but they never tell us what has caused the problem in these motherboard, because it is obviously their own design fault. Then, here comes a basic question-

Why should we pay for HP's mistake?

This is especially true when the same problem will come again and again.
Jake Hallock
Jul 12, 2009 18:41:17 GMT    Unassigned

It is true that hp is responsible for how the laptop was engineered but suppose they designed it like most other laptops, a known layout that has worked in previous cases, I'm not saying that they did design it that way but I'm talking hypothetically, if the graphics card still causes the computer to fail even in that typical layout then hp cant be blamed for the failure BUT they can be blamed for not testing to find the failure and for not fixing the failure once it was found in the public.

I would say that you guys are totally justified if you do end up sueing hp and I agree that hp really should have tested for this sort of thing (stress tests to speed up aging). I am just saying that they are not completely to blame but nor are they blameless.

Also more about the graphics chip, I have heard that it was actually the coating on the graphics chip that is supposed to shield the chip from heat that gets too hot.

When I close the lid on my TX1000 series, specifically tx1210us, and go back after several hours, the laptop seems to come on with no screen, just black.
I then slide the on/off and hold several seconds to the right to turn off. I wait for a few moments and then turn the computer back on and the screen desktop comes back.
Also had a problem hooking up to my TV. At first using the FN key plus the F4 key worked and then when I tried again, it turned my screen black on the laptop and would not hook-up to my TV. That's when I had to call the HP tech support, download drivers to my other computer and then use an external monitor that I finally got working to install the new drivers. At first I was elated but then again had problems.
Vista has optional Nvidea drivers Ge force 6150 and NVidea controller network drives but I'm afraid to install for fear I I will totally lose my screen view again.
Bottom line...there's definitely a video driver problem and hibernation exacerbates the problem and I'm not certain what the real fix is. I'm running Vista Prem. with SP 2, the vieo driver is NVidea GeForce 6150, version 7.15.11.6743 thanks, debbie

Add another to the list.

This was a tx1499 purchased in late may of 2008. Now...when I turn it on...quickplay lights come on and that's it. Nothing on the screen. No activity with the hard drive after 1-2 seconds. It all started after waking up from hibernation. I tried all the basic fixes such as removing the battery and unplugging the unit. Nothing has worked. Of course, I called HP and even offered to purchase an extended warranty for about 150 dollars. They wouldn't admit any faults with the computer even after I mentioned this forum. And they wouldn't even let me buy an extended warranty because they say the laptop is now INOP.

I paid HP Japan $490 to replace my motherboard in October 2008 for the blank boot-up.

My notebook reached its blank boot-up death again in mid-July 2009; that's a functional motherboard of roughly 9 months.

I'll call HP again to ask them to cover their faulty replacement. (since it has only been 9 months)

If this can only be resolved by my paying another $490, I will change laptop loyalties and shop for a Fujitsu or an Acer.

Besides this inconvenient problem caused by a MINOR soldering defect, I've enjoyed my HP notebook immensely.  It would be a shame.

For the past year, I have been having problems with my TX series laptop well. Every other month, something else went out on it; the computer is virtually worthless right now, if and when it even turns on. The fingerprint reader went out, then the memory card reader, then the touch screen, then the CD/DVD drive, then the webcam, then the wireless, then even certain programs started to malfunction. Now, I can spend a whole day repeatedly turning the computer on and off hoping it will boot successfully; and if it does happen to boot, I still have all the above mentioned problems. At first, I figured I just received a bad computer (luck of the draw) and just continued to search online to see if there was a fix for these problems; now I see it is completely evident the TX series is faulty and an overwhelming amount of people are having the same wireless, heat, mobo, unbootable, etc., problems with this series. Unfortunately, HP is not recalling this series or helping out anyone who has purchased a computer from the faulty TX series; this is unacceptable as the problem is so widespread and an obvious HP design/product flaw. What’s even worse, is this how this faulty line was one of HP's most expensive; I spent nearly $2,000 on this now unusable computer. I bought this computer to keep in contact with my family while I had to go overseas; and its problems kept me from doing so. I can see HP making one or two bad computers (it happens), but a whole series? And then to deny the problem, offer no help, and then only charge customers for repairs that will not solve the problem, but only render the computer non-working again in a few months (and ready for more repair charges)? Unacceptable. I really didn’t expect this from Compaq/HP; we had been buying their computers for years. HP should quit hiding this problem, do the right thing, and fix it.

UPDATE on my situation:

HP told me that the replaced motherboard last year only had a warranty of 3 months.  So they won't cover it.

The towel trick (overheating the machine before using) has worked for me.  However, this fix is temporary because it'll eventually fail again after prolonged use.  So, as a precautionary measure, I bought a laptop cooler and limited my own computer time.

This is obviously not a permanent solution.  And since I won't be receiving any REAL help from HP, I'm already looking into other PC makers.

As much as I like my TX series notebook from HP, this whole problem just isn't worth my time and money anymore.  Simple as that!

I wish HP would stop deleting my comments since they are true, and thus not defamatory.

Anyway, I can tell my laptop is on its last leg. The speaker icon is red even when the speakers are on, and blue when they are off. Sometimes my wireless light is red, when clearly it's in use. Sometimes it's not. And recently, my laptop has become seemingly possessed...pasting things randomly, text goes into CAPS even if CAPS is off and I'm not touching shift, and I'm having trouble highlighting. I bought a fan to keep it cool, but I know it's only a matter of time.

Stop running from the issue HP, and just address it...

I have been having the same issues with my tx 1000 series laptop (tx 1305ca). I purchased my laptop in November 2007 from a Future Shop location east of Ottawa.

After taking my laptop back to Future Shop five (5) times for issues related to the motherboard, three (3) of which times it was shipped directly to HP, I am left with nothing but a pretty paper weight and my immense frustration.

I began having issues with the wireless off and on and it completely stopped working after my laptop was around 10 months old. After several unsucessful repairs for the wireless card, the motherboard stopped responding as well. HP replaced the motherboard (and apparantly the hard drive just in case). Now another 10 months or so have passed and here I am again, only this time I have no warranty. :-( First it was the wireless and Future Shop was kind enough to assess my laptop at no charge ... and of course it is actually the motherboard, not the wireless card. Within a few days *poof*, there goes another HP motherboard. So, now I am left with a pretty little paper weight. Of course, Future Shop cannot do much except recommend contacting HP and checking for an extended service agreement (aka recall) for the known issue. After several trips to Future Shop and numerous calls to HP tech support (including a case manager)I have been offered a mere 50% off of a replacement motherboard - which of course will render itself useless again within 10 months or so ... way to go HP.

So, apparently (as I was informed by an HP case manager) even if the unit is deemed defective and an extended service repair agreement (or recall) is provided by HP, IF THE UNIT IS OVER 24 MONTHS OLD, THEY DO NOT HAVE TO REPAIR/REPLACE IT. Hmmmm ... I don't know about you, but my unit is nearing 24 months of age (November 2009). So, a little more foot dragging and then I'm sure HP will finally grant us our recall. :P

G'Day, my problem is the same but without loosing the wifi or blank screen. I have a 1219au, but it has a history or just randomly shutting down without warning. Today I had it on battery power (low load etc) and it shut down unexpectedly. Now it is completely dead with no lights of any kind. No responce to the power button etc. When you plug the power cord in it doesn't even come up with the blue light. The laptop had over half power in the battery when it died.

I just the same thing just happened to me a few minutes ago. I have a tx1000. First the WiFi died on me about a month and a half ago. Now when I turn on the computer the hard drive light flashes for a few second and nothing happens, not even the Hp logo or anything any more. I have already turned it on and off for about 10 time already to no avail.

Add me to the list. My tx1000 was bought Oct2007 and the wireless LAN just disappeared last week. i called customer service and like the others was asked to pay $300-$400 to fix it. Screw that! I can buy a more powerful PC nowadays if I only add a few more dollars. This will be the last HP in our household from now on.

G'Day All. I posted 2 up. An update on mine. It was totally dead, no light when the power came on etc. With help from the support guys I got it to start up (once). Take out the battery and power cord. Hold the "turn on" button for 20 seconds, Then put it all back together and it started. I was stunned. The next time I went to turn on the computer however, I get the blank screen, all the blue lights etc. I then tried the towel trick, but didn't work. So its had its last breath.

Isn't it apparent that there is a SERIOUS problem with the TX series along with several other of your computers?

I was a very happy HP customer in the past... I was ALWAYS impressed with your computers... When I purchased my TX1410 I was absolutely ecstatic but it has come out that your "best line of computers" (as customer service told me) is actually NOT the best line. The computers have FAILED us.

HP, do the right thing. RECALL these computers... Give us our money back. You could do the right thing and walk out of this with people saying "HP did the right thing"...

Is it better to live in justice.

I wrote a letter to HP CEO last week. Then I got a call from HP customer service and told me that HP would not fix any computer out of warranty free. After 20 minutes waiting on phone, HP also told me that there was no discount on fixing my hp tx 1000.

View the video to fix your systems. It works, I'm typing this reply on my 'fixed' tx system via wireless :-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI
I fixed two (dv9000 & tx1419nr) systems. It's not that hard. It's the GPU (Nvidia) socket connection to the board. On my tx, first no wireless, then no bios screen. On the dv9000, no video. The fix works! Maybe HP should review the video. Search for 'nvidia recalls' in google for more info about the problem. Also, The GPU is not damaged, it's just not well 'connected'. It took me a couple of attempts on the tx system and I did use the penny.

Also, after the fix, set your power settings to hp recommended. It runs the system at cooler levels. (Side Note: One of the hp bios upgrades increased the fan speed to extend the time of failure).

The cost of the fix was about 10.00 for thermal paste.
Good luck !!! I feel your pain.

I am also in computer HELL right now.. and so is my firey computer. It gets so dang hot and the fan on my HP Pavilion 9000 runs so fast I'm pretty sure it's going for take off. The computer has been in for repair three times - and has been pretty much rebuilt due to it's innards frying. I am so thankful for my extended warranty because it would be just another piece of electronic dump... and is probably bound there when the warranty expires as it's completely unfixable. I can't even run FACEBOOK on it let alone for what I purchased it for - graphic design in Photoshop.

I was quite angry at Best Buy, from where I purchased it - however I am now pointing the blame towards HP for selling this laptop. I previously owned a HP Pavilion dv1000 and it was a wonderful machine and funny... I am using it right now to type this... I spent $900 for it and $2000 for the dv9000. Go figure.

I don't know where else to turn.

Add me to the list.  WiFi went down, now BlSOD a couple months later.  tx1320, always used a fan.  I do IT for about 30 people, and I have tried everything I can think of and tried everything in this post (except the freezer and towel bit.  Curious why the freezer would work.).  Seems obvious it's poor soldering between the GPU and mobo.  Since some people report screen (and other) problems, and this laptop obviously runs very hot, it is probably a system-wide overheating issue, with the WLAN and GPU the most susceptible.  Will try soldering the GPU first with the penny and drill holes in the case next to the GPU and WLAN.  Haven't looked yet, but I wonder if they are next to eachother on the board?  I agree with HP that warranties should only last a year, but if a problem is consistent and of this type, they should be a lot more sympathetic to their customers if they want me to assume they make quality products.  I will email Hurd so they now.  btw, since Jan 1, 09, I counted 115 (now 116) with this problem.  Since they fixed it for the tx2000 series, obviously they know about it :)

I suggest:
We call (not harass) the *same* Case Manager (or better, Executive Case Manager) on the same day (eh, probably take a week!).  This will really dramatize our problem.  I suggest John, as he seems helpful (number?).  If no one has a number, someone wrote that Ana (1-800-756-0608 ext.7) handles all case managers; or the case manager line: 1-877-917-4380.  Sometime in October seem like a good date?  Thoughts?  Ideas?  Let's really make this work!  Hit me up.

OK, I just followed that video to the youtube fix and was reading through the comments. One person said to hold down the enter key when turning it on...hard, really hard. I had to squeeze it from both the top and the bottom, but I got it to boot up 3 out of 6 times! Not great, but I'll refine my "method" and with perseverance, will get better :) Makes sense if it's a loose electrical/soldering/connection issue. Squeezing it probably puts the two contacts back into contact with each other. Hope it helps. Stay strong everyone!

btw, the youtube author also gets better at his method so you don't have to take the whole thing apart.

I thought it was just my notebook that was defective. I bumped into someone at Best Buy who was returning the same model. I asked what was wrong and he went through the same issues I am having.. Now I can see that I am not the only one. I have had this notebook in and out of service 4 times and each visit is averaging just over $100.
The frustrating part is HP not willing to own up to or help us with this. I have been a loyal HP customer for years. My household is full of their products from the first Digital Entertainment Centre, to a new wireless printer. I would expect them to stand behind a defective product. That said, if there isn't some kind of reslove.

HP TX 1000 (1001au) - Same problem, after 18 months the machine wont boot - the towel trick has kept the machine going but now it has got to the stage where it is now useless. This machine is now 2 years and 5 months old and just gathering dust. Just add me to the list.

HP should recall the tx1000. The video showing how to fix it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI now has 26,250 views.

I had reached the "third circle" in the progression described in previous posts, with the notebook turning itself off about a second after pushing the power button. The procedure in the YouTube video worked for me. It shows that HP could fix this without doing system board replacement. A tech could do it in maybe an hour. In my opinion it's not an overheating problem, but a manufacturing defect in the fastening of the GPU. In my unit the wax was cracked in places and didn't even go all the way around the module. Evidently the material was not tested for aging effects due to temperature cycling.

So, a preventative measure may be to keep the notebook powered up and hot at all times.

For those who need a repair and don't want to hold out for a recall, you may consider having a PC repair shop look at the video and tell you if they would do the repair. I'd guess a price in the range of $100-$150 would be reasonable.

Of course, if the towel method works, all the better. I didn't try it. You might press down on the keyboard around the Enter key while the laptop is still hot.

OK, I started having the same problem at the beginning of September
3 weeks later and 2 phone calls to HP service support left me very troubled, since the first guy (a week ago) told me that I need to speak to a case manager, although he didn't think I should get my hopes up, while the last one (a lady, yesterday) didn't even want to connect me to a case manager nor her supervisor "don't see why my supervisor should leave what he's working for to assist you".

I have written mr Hurd, the CEO, so I will post here any updates.

I currently can't use wireless LAN nor Ethernet LAN.

I don't have the answer on how to fix our laptops. I paid $1200 for a laptop from a trusted manufacturer so I could avoid this very problem. It is alarming that HP could standby and watch so many posts being put on this very site and not have any response to the paying people who have backed and supported them for years.

I too purchased this unit in Feb of 2008 and now it sits idle on my desk. The unit overheats, WIFI dropped out and it shuts down for no reason. It now wont boot up normally and takes up to 30 times and when it does nothing is working. Network, printing it has lost it brains completely.

Much like the management of HP if they continue to ignore and not take action on this issue.

Ok, so after about a week, my laptop died again. Redid the "disassemble and apply heat lamp" trick, worked again for about a week. After a while, I ended up with a bunch of holes for ventilation in the back of my case, one penny between the gpu and the heatsink, and I think two pennies between the heatsink and the case, thinking they would keep the gpu pushed in. This still didn't work long-term, and the "pressing Enter" method wasn't reliable enough. Yesterday, I took the keyboard off, but kept the zif wire attached, and turned it on while pressing my finger down on the motherboard from the keyboard side and my other finger up from the backside on the gpu, and it worked right away. Strange thing was after doing this 3 or 4 times, it would turn on without having to press anything! Now I have a room fan under the gpu, one of those $20 jet engine looking ones from honeywell or ge I think, but it still runs in the high 60's when attached to a 22" monitor. Anyways, hope this helps. Still can't figure out the wireless problem though...

I too, am a victim of this, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way I can salvage the data on my laptop? The thing won't seem to start up one bit, but if it IS starting up, I'm afraid I wouldn't know it since I "accidently" cracked the screen. In my anger over the laptop suddenly getting so much worse, I did more damage than I meant to.

My friend has the exact same model of laptop, but his is still working, so I was thinking of removing our harddrives from both our laptops and putting mine into his so I can access my data and possibly move it onto an external hard drive or something, but when we remove the back cover off the harddrive, the harddrive seems impossible to remove. Does anyone know how to remove the harddrive?

Or maybe there are other ways, like a networking solution even if the laptop doesn't full start up or something? I really hope I can save my data. ;_;

I am on the same boat. Had my tx1000 for about 2.5 years now. I sent it in to get it fixed less than a year from buy it. Reason for sending it in was because of the power up with all lights working but screen black and no response from the hard drive. Got it back and asked what was wrong with it. They said "motherboard and hard drive was replaced." (so technically it should be as fast as when I first purchased the computer...not even close) then over this past summer, the wifi refused to turn on nor was the computer detecting a wireless card. I read forums when that happened and realized that it was just a ticking time bomb from then on. And the forums weren't lying, my Tx1000 is having a relapse of the same problem from before.

HP is worthless at helping once your warranty is gone. I decided to fix it myself since i have nothing to lose now. Worse case scenario, the computer is dead just like before. Best case, starts working again.

and to take out the hard drive, you take off the cover for the hard drive. then you take off the two screws that hold the hard drive in place. then you lift up the hard drive from that spot (this disconnects the hard drive). hope that helps. good luck to everyone!

so i read someone held down the 'enter' key really hard and it worked. i took apart the computer to see what was under the 'enter' key. its the graphics card. and i remember seeing someone say that the computer refuses to start when its not cooling. all good information. i took apart the cooling system to see why it wouldnt cool down the graphics card. there is this mold/putty kind of material that is in between the cooling system and the actual chip. i remolded this putty and put it back together and now it works again. like someone else mentioned, i don't know how long its going to stay functional but as of now, its running like normal.

i have the same problem, a black out screen, mine is a tx1410us..i had my mothrboard replced during the 1 year warranty period, but several months later, the same problem happened again!... the troubleshooting suggestion is not a permanent fix, but it can revive our laptop for a while, i just dont know up to when it will last.. i tried the towel trick and it worked for some time, but the same problem recurred.. i tried also the pressing of the keys j,k,l and enter key as hard as you can while turning the power on, and it also worked! i wrote the ceo of hp, i'm just waiting for the reply.. i suggested a recall on all our tx1000 series laptops.. i hope they'll do it.. good luck to all of us
