I have a new Officejet 6310 AiO printer installed on a tiny network with an XP Pro notebook (HP Omnibook6100). The XP is at SP2 with all updates, running Symantec AV and Windows Firewall (both were off during installation).

To my relief the supplied HP driver software installed without issues, and printing and scanning works as advertised, if a bit slowly.

Alas, when the printer is switched off or the computer taken off the network, something causes CPU usage to go to 100%. In Task Manager I can see one of the SVCHOST processes bouncing around at 80-90% CPU usage when this is happening. This behavior appeared exactly when the printer was installed, and comes and goes exactly according to whether the printer (or network connection) is off or on respectively.

although in my case the HPZinw12 process appears quiet (0%) and the problem shows up as SVCHOST... but other than that my symptoms are identical (including abnormal termination of hpqtra08.exe).

If anyone knows of a fix or work-around for this excessive CPU usage I'd love to hear about it. Surfing the web I see descriptions of this HP Printer Driver quirk, in various forms, going back several years. I thought they'd fixed it by now...

Notebook battery usage at 100% CPU makes this situation non-tolerable for the field operations I need to do with this computer!

I have the same problem with my new C6183, only that the problem presists even when the printer is connected - as soon as a try to create some sort of communication with the printer the SVCHOST goes to 98-100% and stays there. I had to uninstall the printer. I still don't have the answer but I suspect it is the hpqtra08.exe - a process that is designed to monitor the key strokes on the printer control panel (so you can, for example, scan directly from the printer keypad).

If anybody else thinks of a solution I would be happy to hear (BTW - I tried to install the dirver only version which could be downloaded from the site. The problem presists).

I agree -- it is hpqtra08.exe. I disabled that process from loading at startup (using msconfig) and CPU utilization returned to normal. I would suggest giving that a try.

I am still able to to print, copy, and scan using the printer. The printer monitoring icon that was in the system tray is gone, but I can't detect that I've lost any functionality other than that. (I haven't tried faxing since disabling hpqtra08, and I may not have scanned using just the printer buttons... I generally start HP's printer app using Start>Programs when I'm going to scan anyway.)

I lost 2-3 evenings to installing this printer, and found HP Support to be worthless -- other than this forum, where most of the help comes from other frustrated customers. There's a message there, if HP has the wits to hear it.

I have similar problem with HP solution software which is causing svchost.exe to go 100% when I install HP Photosmat C4380 software on my machine. Printer works fine, but my computer is hogging 100% CPU>.

Looking into svchost.exe It seems to be started with C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k HPService

Looking into thread from process explorer CPU hogging in happening in hpslpsvc32.dll+0x4464a address.


Definitely problem with hpslpsvc.32 DLL.. Any help would be appreciated.

Finally nailed down 100% CPU problem by svchost to "HP Network Device Support" service. I changes this service to from "Automatic" to "Manual" so that it doesn't start every time my laptop reboots. Doing to strangly resolved 100% cpu problem, and also it seems like even though the service "HP Network Device Support" is manual, it get's started automactically. I guess some other services starts this service, however when we change service configuration to automatic, it cause conflict with windows service manager, hence 100% CPU with svchost.exe.

To resolve the problem:
start --> run --> services.msc
- above brings services UI
- Right click on "HP Network Device Support" service,
- select property.
- in Startup type pulldown menu, changeto "Manual" from "Automactic".
- You are good to go.

I recently installed a AIO C6180 and noticed the CPU usage going towards 100% on a dual core AMD machine runing Vista Ultimate 64. The svchost(HPservices) was the primary culprit as discribed above. AND, turning the Network services to manual seems to have killed the cpu usage runaway while still allowing the AIO to operate correctly.

HP - FIX THIS!!

I've got exactly the same problem as described by Eddy bu with a C7200 printer.

In addition several applications (Outlook, svchost.exe) became unstable and crashe from time to time. As soon as I uninstall the whole applications coming on the HP Driver CD, problems disappear.

I still have no solution.

Can anybody help ?

I have the same problem with a HP Officejet Pro L7580 connected with Ethernet.

I had to stop and set the HP Network Devices Support to start in manual to solve the problem.

Wow. Thanks guys. I've been getting ready to throw my VAIO out the 2nd floor balcony for the last 2 months. I have seen svchost.exe consume all of my CPU to the point where I can't even type effectively. Thanks you to guys I was able to isolate it to HPSLPSVC32.DLL so I killed it and then set it to MANUAL.

So far so good.

Where do I send the check?

Hello all,

I had the same issue but with "only" 50% cpu time for the svchost process. (I use an HP C6280 AIO)
I've fixed it with the hints in this article, many thanks ...

But here's what i want to say:
I like the functionality of this printer, but i hate the software/driver bundled with it.
It costs me days to get this thing running. First there was Software installing problems, then deinstalling problems, ended with a fresh windowsXP installation.
Now this behavior with high cpu-load.
I've no idea how "normal" users without technical background can fix all this problems ?!!

Please HP, develop Software/Drivers that can be used directly without days of troubleshooting.

I have the C6180, after several attempts at fixing the CPU SLOW problem, I wiped my laptop and reinstalled my OS. I installed all my applications and the machine is lightning fast, as I would expect. Today I took the plunge and reinstalled the C6180-what a mistake! I spent time on the phone with Tech Support and got the usual answer, reinstall the printer software which I did. All over again I am having problems with performance. Something is just searching the disc and slowing down the system. I looked in services as noted on other posts and did not find the application. The only HP applications (I think) that are running is the Port Resolver and Status Server, both are set to manual. After the install I deleted some stuff from Common Startup. Thoughts anyone?

Same with me and my HP Officejet Pro K5400dn
Eats up CPU after start of system.
Found svchost.exe > HPSLPSVC with help of Process Explorer v11.04 (very good!!)
Stop process / service: CPU usage is normal
Printer is still working
Have set it to manual instead of automatic but don't know result right now.

additional remarks: I like the HP Hardware but had more than one time trouble with attached software; with installation, with de-installation and with usage. Service gave anwers which were not helpful (install again, should work).

Same problem with a C6280... obviously a software problem unrelated to model of printer. Losing the start up item as for mentioned fixes the issue as well as suspending the service or killing it. Seems typical of the HP monitoring software from experience. Typically I never install the extra software manufactures include, but since this is my home PC I wanted the bells and whistles. Lame.

Shame on HP for not at least answering this thread. It took me 6 hours before I realised that the problem was related to your software.

But after that I quickly found Vijendra Dwivedi excellent solution. Thank you very very much Vijendra Dwivedi. You saved me several hours and gave a very exact solution to the problem.

This thread is the only time I've ever used the HP Support Forum... does anyone know if it is HP policy to reply in some official capacity in response to these issues? I'm not holding my breath... just glad that everyone (including me) is getting pointers to solve^H^H^H^H^Hband-aid the problem.

I dont know the HP policy. But I know what the policy ought to be: help us solve problems related to HP software.

If you go to the top of this thread, you will se that Eddy reported the problem in March 2007 (and he tested that the problem really was related to HP software). The following month two users made it clear that this was not a one-time problem. ONLY AFTER 8 MORE MONTHS a solution was found - due to a great work by Vijendra Dwivedi.

Btw this is not the only thread that are started because of this problem.

I think we pay a premium price for the HP brand. Other brands have products that are probably just as good (I am not an expert). But some of us pays the premium price in the hope that we get the most reliable and well supported products, because we know that money saved initially can turn out to cost a lot of time later.

This is the first time I have needed HP support and I am disappointed with the HP effort. The only help HP provided is making this forum web site, and that is no big effort.

How to install HP L7580 or L7680 printer painlessly on a XP-PRO system.

Printer software hog resource if you install everything including Network support on main computer therefore:
1. Install HP recommended (huge) programs on main computer using USB
2. Install just enough drivers on remote computers for wired Ethernet
3. Network printing is really optional; skip it if you have too mucy trouble.

Procedure on main computer (USB)

1. Download current full program(300meg plus) from HP for your XP or vista, should be similar)
2. Run program on main computer BUT do not hook up USB or Ethernet cable to the printer. DO not turn power on!!
3. Install only needed programs .
4. when prompted, select USB hookup as choice, leave wired network unchecked
5. Connect USB cable only when instructed, turn printer ON
6. It will take 10-20 minutes to get the whole thing done, including HP Digital image monitor.
7. after everything is complete, print a test page
8. Check TaskMon to see if svhhost.exe doesn’t take 100% resource all the time. It shouldn’t be. If computer got bog down, get help on the web (not from HP) or uninstall the whole thing and start all over.

Procedure on remote computer(s) (networked)
1. Hook up printer to Ethernet hub
2. Check and copy printer name/ IP address of printer on the your Hub software;
(or get printer network setting from the printer (read instruction: setup/network setup/print network setting))
3. on remote computer, go to control panel, add new printer
4. select 'local printer connect to this computer', uncheck plug and play
5. next
6. click to create a new port
7. select standard tcp/ip port
8. next
9. paste or type IP address of printer obtained from 2
10. once computer acknowledge new port (HP printer port), and goes on to install printer drivers
11. install printer driver by inserting install CD from HP and select L75xx printer driver
12. should be in 5 minutes
13. Check printer and fax from control panel to see if printer is ‘ready’.
14. Print test page

The problem with HP Officejet 6310 is due to Windows XP Firewall. I have found out that the file "wbemcore.dll" causes one of the SVCHOST process bouncing around at 90% of CPU usage, because the Windows XP firewall does not allow the HP software to connect to the web, while the software itself keeps on trying the connection.

I handled the thing that way: 1) definitely shut down the XP firewall; 2) download and install "Zone Alarm" firewall; 3) if you have the printer connected to a net via Ethernet cable (and this was my own case), add your printer IP address to the "reliable zone" of your new firewall, along with the other IP addresses of your net (e.g. the server, and so on).

Now my printer and its software work well after two days of frustrating installation attempts.

Things like this make me thinking that my HP printer customer days have come to and end: no patches, no updates, no information about a well known problem that must have been fixed months ago.

GioTa: When I had the problem, the Windows XP firewall was disabled as my customer was using the Norton firewall. So the problem is not always due to Windows XP Firewall.

I think the solution stated by Vijendra Dwivedi on October 17 2007 is the most general and easy solution.

I am amazed that HP still does not respond.

I have the same problems with my new L7780 connected to my pc via D-Link 524 router. I disabled HP Network Devices Support in Services and most of my problems have disappeared except I still can not fax from my pc (couldn't anyway!) and the Scan To function on the Printer Panel no longer works (not a problem - using the scan function on the pc HP Solution Centre instead). I wonder if there is a connection between the scan and fax malfunctions - could be a conflict with the Windows Image Aquisition WIA service (saw this on another string re same problems) - disable this also or instead perhaps?

Yup, I had the same deal with the HP OfficeJet L7850 using a VAIO loptop under Windows XP Pro SP2. I had a MISERABLE installation experience: Corrupt CD, several evenings of installing / uninstalling, three different 300 Meg downloads of the CD-Rom (2 of which would not unpack) and two chat sessions with HP tech, which were no help at all.

The good news is that yes, setting the HP Network Devices Support to manual startup instead of automatic solved the problem.

You would think that HP would address this problem by updating the program so that when it gets into whatever loop it does when the printer is not found, it would optionally ask the user if it should stop looking. As in "YES, I KNOW MY PRINTER IS NOT CONNECTED." and, ideally, a box to not ask me again. In my case, it is a laptop that is usually NOT connected to the printer.

Even better, the install program would ask if the printer will always be connected and optionally set the Startup to Manual for such users who will often NOT be connected.

Man, I buy HP for its quality and great service reputation, but those days may be over.

Thanks you guys,I bought & installed an OfficeJet L7580 yesterday with my eyes opened by the various comments I had read in most reviews. I D/L'd version 8.0.1 and didn't even mess with the included software. Everything went very well with mt ethernet setup. Then I too noticed 50-100% continuous CPU usage. I just did the "services.msc fix", which worked!!! YEAH!

I have only one problem left to resolve ('till the next one...), each time I boot up, an Explorer window opens to "C:\Program Files\HP" which contains the folders: "Common" and "Temp". The call for this folder at start-up is not in any of my "C:\Documents and Settings\XXXX\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folders. Any ideas on how to keep this folder from opening at boot?

Try to go to tools on your explorer then select internet option, there you will see how to change the default page as you like when it reboots.

Thanks James, however I mislead you. What opens at boot-up is a WINDOWS Explorer (not "Internet Explorer"), window opening to "C:\Program Files\HP". It's not harmful, it's just irritating (another word for Windows...). I'm still looking for the culprit.

I had the same problem. To correct the problem you need to open your registry editor (run> regedit), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run. Look at the Data column in the far right and look for any value that begins with C:\Program Files\HP. You should have more than one if you are having this problem. You need to put quotes around the entire data string. For example: C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe becomes "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe" Just double click on the name of the data, just left of REG_SZ, to bring up the edit box and put quotes around the entire value data. Repeat this procedure for any entry that is HP related. You should also look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run and repeat the procedure for any HP values listed there also.

This will keep the C:\Program Files\HP folder from popping up every time you boot up.

Well, this thread is kind of old, but the problem is new to me. I am using the C4385 photosmart multifunction with a wireless connection - different hardware, but nearly the same software, with the same hpqtra08.exe issues. I think Vijendra Dwivedi has it right - to set HP Network Device Support" service to "Automatic" from "Manual" start. But I would add that I have not found it necessary to disable hpqtra08.exe process startup using msconfig, as EMell suggested. Let it start up normally, and the HP Network Device Support" service will start (even though set on "manual"). The printer monitoring icon (HP Digital Imaging Monitor) remains active (certainly not a must-have, but helpful, especially for me because of my wireless connection) and svchost.exe -k HPService cpu activity remains normal, with no loss of functionality. (Well, none that I've found, yet.)

Ran into this issue myself on a customer's computer. Figured out the problem without the help of this forum (SysInternals Process Explorer to the rescue!). Came to the same conclusion. Set service HPSLPSVC to manual startup.

Stupid that I have to do this.

YOU SHOULD INSTALL THE ORIGINAL DRIVER THAT CAME WITH THE PRINTER

USE THE CD FOR HP OFFICEJET 6310
..there are no full feature software available on the website for the 6310..

I hit the same issue others have - this time on Windows 7. I have a Photosmart 2610. The CPU went to 100% and stayed there, and resource monitor showed me it was the HPSLPSVC service - HP Network Devices Support. The running executable was C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k HPService

I had to kill that process to get the CPU to settle down.

That service uses HPSLPSVC32.DLL; my version is 82.0.173.0.
