You need to go to the removal and replacement and then look for the removal of the fuser. It is not an easy job but that will give you access. If I assume correctly the jam is the output of the printer, then that roller is part of the fuser.
Hi Dave thanks for your support and patience. I have read the relevant bit of the manual, i think i will buy my operative a scanner and standard cheap laser printer the effort is just too much for the reward..... anyone want to buy a M1522 with a small problem... :-)
On a quiet late afternoon, with lots of deep breathing to keep myself calm, I have just removed the ADF and cleared a wrap-around paper jam, and successfully put the damned machine back together again.
The service manual referenced in another response does not specify how to remove the entire ADF, but parts of other instructions are helpful. And doing some further reading in the service manual may help you avoid missteps.
1. Remove the ADF input tray.
2. Remove the ADF motor cover, pp. 75-76. This takes patience.
3. Remove the ADF pick-up roller assembly, pp. 85-86.
4. Remove that green paper-guide assembly that is taped to the ADF.
5. Carefully remove the three small screws that fasten down the ADF (the whole black unit on my machine)from the flatbed cover. One screw is at the back, and one at each back corner. You need a #8 torx (star) screwdriver, and the heads of those screws strip really easily. I stripped one.
5. With those three screws out, you can lift the ADF assembly away from the flatbed cover. When I did so, I was able to see my paper, wrapped around whatever cylinder that is, and to very carefully work the paper loose and remove it, using a small screwdriver and needle nose pliers.
6. Reassemble. The ADF slides forward into place before you replace the three screws. The the front bottom edge of the ADF has three plastic tabs that slide into place on the flatbed cover. Hook the lower end the spring into place before you screw down the ADF, as the lower hooking point for that spring is pretty inaccessible after the ADF is in place. Be careful not to accidentally crimp any of the wires that you see.
This is one non-mechanic's one-time experience. Proceed at your own risk.
This is really bad design. This ADF jams on anything that's not perfect, to begin with. And even if it weren't so fussy, there should be a way to jog the feed, or to unclamp the death-grip, so that clearing a paper jam wouldn't require this much time and luck. I have never before had to deal with a copier or printer where a paper jam was such a crisis.
Hey, HP, what are you going to do about the design?
Hi Michael One word you used out of context with M1522.... DESIGN..... dont think it computes, i threw mine away and bought a printer which is supportable AND supported
works great, happy now with no jams and if there are i can fix em.... simples
