I have a wierd fault with a P4015. If i try to print any document, test page or engine test the motors and fans start up then slow down then start up in a contiuous cycle which can carry on for several minutes when suddenly the tray 2 solinoid activates and the document prints. The m/c prints fine from tray 1. I've tried replacing the tray 2 solinoid, pick up assy, dc controller and scanner assy with no success. Any ideas anyone may have about this fault would be greatly appriciated. Many thanks in advance.

elqueso,

I stumbled upon this article today and it might help you out:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=125&prodSeriesId=1161389&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=bpl07351

Try plugging your printer directly into the wall if you are using a power strip of any kind for your printing. Your printer might be recieving inconsistent power, just enough to cause the unusual problem you are describing.

Thanks,
(Points appreciated)

I know when you use the manual feeder the printer prints at 1/3 the normal speed. Perhaps the issue is the fuser itself since it has to operate at a faster speed. What I would do if the printer is out of warranty is turn the printer off and remove the fuser and reseat it and try again. I would also maybe try a cold reset. If in warranty call hp customer care for help.

M/c is out of warrenty. I reseated the fuser and tried a cold reset but still the same. Would a faulty fuser cause this type of fault?

Only if the fuser is not getting to the correct temp and keeps trying and when it does then it prints. Most times it should give you an error before then. Since it needs more power to drive the fuser when using tray 2 I would think maybe the power supply has an issue, but without error reports it is difficult to pin down. Just for the heck of it with paper on tray 1 go to the diagnostics menu and run a event log to see if you can get any info from it.

event log shows nothing. You won't believe this but went to another client today with a P4015 and guess what, they have exactly the same fault!!! Is there any way of contacting HP to see if they have come across or are aware of the fault?

You can always contact thier 1-800 number and ask for technical support. That will get you into the first level of support.

If you are out of warranty then you will be out of luck and they wont help you. If you are covered then HP should be able to replace your printer with no problems.

Let us know what HP has to say about the problem so that other readers can learn too!

I have seen reference on the hp csn site to an issue where the printer hangs saying printing and does not print. The issue is not the same but could be related. They say to do a component test to see if M101 which is the main pickup motor is working. If not then replace that motor first.

Motor, DC, 24 V, main drive RL1-1657-000CN

Located on the right side and I think it only effects tray 2 and not the manual feeder.

Replaced main motor but still the same. I don't know where to go next with this m/c. tried changing paper settings and fusr modes etc to see if it had any effect but still the same.
