first, uninstall your canon and software, then look for "leftovers" from HP and delete those folders
you can look in : -program files \ HP or scanner folder -Start>run>msconfig and check in startup for HP startups or in the services for an HP service(click hide MS services first) -also remove the TWAIN_32 folder
1. Uninstall the Cannon scanner software. 2. Delete Digital folder if it is still there by following the steps given below.
=== Delete the Digital Imaging folder ====
Restart the computer system before following the steps below.
1. Double-click the My Computer icon. The My Computer window will open. 2. Double-click the C: drive. The C: driver will expand. 3. Double-click the Program Files folder. The Program Files folder will expand. 4. Double-click the Hewlett-Packard folder. The Hewlett-Packard folder will expand. 5. Right-click the Digital Imaging folder and select Delete. 6. Close all open windows.
3. Remove Twain_32 folder from your system.
Remove the Twain_32 folder with the steps listed below:
1. Click on 'Start' menu and 'Run'. 2. Type Twain_32 and press enter, a window will open. 3. Press ctrl+A to sselect all the files including the hidden files. 4. Delete all the files and empty Recycle Bin.
4. Reinstall the Canon scanning software again. |

why do you refer to Canon? It is the HP PSC 1210 that I'm trying to re-install. Will your same instructions still apply?
Don't I need TWAIN 32 for other operatios? Won't deleting be a problem? |

Did you ever find an actual solution to this problem? I don't understand the proposed solution concerning Canon SW. I have the same error message and I am stumped. I have uninstalled/reloaded the HP software several times, and cannot use the scanner function, but the printer & copier functions work fine. When hooked up to a different computer system the 1210 print/copier/scanner & SW all work fine.
OS is XP with all updates. Using the HP Driver disk that came with printer. |

Gary _ I'm in the same boat as you, although I run WIN ME. I've uninstalled & re-installed so many times. I usually "chat" to get advice. They really do not understand the problem. The representatives just find HP pre-published trouble shooting to various questions and send it to you. I'm pretty sure that there is a conflict between the 1210 software and my PC software or within the 1210 software itself. That's what needs to be addressed - but they don't have the expertise. Hopefully a forum member may be able to help.
Mine always worked fine until about 6 months ago and I've downloaded the HP website software AND the original CD all to no avail. |

I'm in the same boat as Ira and Gary. My configuration matches more closely with Gary. Windows XP Home, latest patch release, running original drivers. My configuration has worked perfectly in the past. I perform a lot of printing, but not so much scanning. I was surprised to find the scanning is now not working. It worked several months ago. I've been scanning the web to find answers, but have not found any solutions. Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

Still a problem. My latest thought was that my anti-virus, McAfee, is preventing the proper installation. I've tried to remove it (although no McAfee "uninstall" routine was provided - I just deleted everything with the name 'McAfee' -- Windows Remove Program also did not work).
I'm having another problem which may be interfering. I am not able to get results from "pop-up" screens. Even to download Windows Updates from microsoft.com, the PC just freezes. And I am pretty sure the 1210 software includes "pop-ups", So that may be my problem.
Any help with this latest "pop-up" problem would be appreciated as well. |

I am in the same boat. Worked for about a year and then it stopped when I moved it to a different USB port. Using a dual boot system Windows ME & Windows XP. The printer works okay with Windows XP, but refuses to re-install on Windows ME. It thinks the software is already installed. Things I have tried 1) Ran AiOscrubber (on the cd and downloaded from the web) 2) Ran Clearall.bat off the CD 3) Ran regcleaner 4) Manually deleted all files begining with HPO & HPZ.
Hopefully somebody has some more suggestions because up to this point the HP Chat people haven't made any progress.
Does anybody know what file or registery entry the installer is looking at to think it has found a newer version?
Are there any command line switches to force a install?

Jim - thanks for responding. It seems you are a lot more computer saavy than I. Would appreciate sharing your knowledge when & if you get this thing scanning. I agree the HP Chat people are not too helpful, even though they come across very confident.
My gut feeling is that the problem lies in the HP scanning software vis-a-vis Windows ME.
Can't the Chat people escalte this issue to the HP software developers to fix? |

I think all support people's egos and their management ding them if they esculate a problem.
It should be automatic esculation if the customer "calls back" within 24 hours to a higher level tech.
Here's something I found I'll try tonight even though I am using ME http://reliableanswers.com/pc/hp_psc.asp

Success. After 3 weeks of installing and uninstalling I got my PSC 1210 back to scanning and printing. In the process I also had to reinstall Windows ME over itself. Below are the basic steps I used to get the PSC 1210 reinstalled.
1. First check your Windows\INF folder for zero (0) byte INF files. Delete any you find. 2. Unplug the USB cable from the printer 3. From the control panel remove any PSC 1210 or HP Imaging software. Probably will be at least two and might require reboots. 4. If you downloaded RW2_21_W02enu.exe from HPâs driver site, expand it somewhere by double clicking on it, mine went to C:\Temp, look in the Util\CCC\Cleanup folder for a file named Cleanup.bat and run it. It will probably require a reboot. If not reboot anyway. 5. In the Util\CCC you should find a file named HPZSCR1200.Bat. Run it and reboot. 6. For good measure you might want to run HPâs AIOScrubber (download from the driverâs site. Reboot. 7. Now delete the folder \Program Files\HP. 8. Check in your Windows\Application Data folder for and HP folders and delete them. 9. Empty the recycle bin and reboot 10. In my archives I have a set of drivers I must have downloaded from HP back in early 2004 when I got the PSC 1210 named DRV_LK_W01.EXE (about 50MB). I expanded it again to c:\temp. 11. It will go through the install of the drivers, but when it asks you to plug in the printer check the box to continue without plugging it in. 12. Reboot. This reboot might take a while Windows updates itâs settings â be patient. 13. Let windows settle down for several minutes (when all disk activity stops) and then plug your PSC 1210 in and go have a coffee while it does it thing. Might take 15 minutes. 14. Reboot again. 15. Try to print and then scan a document.
DRV_LK_W01.EXE does not load that stupid HP Director or HP Scan icon on your desktop.
If you get scripting errors, try going to this Microsoft Site and try the TDC.OCX demo http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/database/tdc/overview.asp
Click on the second Show Me. If you get an error, it means the TDC.OCX activex control is not working on your PC. This activex control and registry entries are installed by Internet Explorer 4 and above. Youâll have to remove Internet Explorer. I used a free utility named Eradicator2001a available on the Internet. I also used IE6Remov.ZIP available from here http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME-b.htm .

Thank you so much. I spent about 4 hours yesterday w/ HP Chat working on this problem - to no avail. I will try your instructions.
One question though. At the end of your instructions you mention removing IE6. Don't you need it to navigate the Web? How do you download it again from Microsoft if you can't explore the web? |

Two ways to skin the IE6 cat 1) Download it before you delete it. There's a option to download all the components and install later. Might want to burn to CD. 2) I use Netscape so I can surf the net until I get IE6 reinstalled. Firefox works also.
Another option is many products (i.e. MS Money) will install IE is its the wrong version or missing.

Jim - copule clarifications:
1) Is Windows\INF a folder in the Windows directory? Or are you saying to find every "*.inf" file and delete it if it is empty?
2)Are you saying to install the PSC 1210 software by opening DRV_LK_W01.EXE? ... and NOT to use the automatic installation when opening "rw2_21_w02enu.exe" from the HP website?
3) I do not have the file "DRV_LK_W01.EXE" on my cmputer at all - apparantly is not download from HP website. Exactly where is it?
BTW I tried last night to no avail - but I used installed from the HP website, not having "DRV_LK_W01.EXE". |

Ira, 1) Windows\INF is a folder on my Windows ME PC. Look in that folder for .inf files that are zero bytes in length. You can click on the size column to sort by size.
2) The DRV_LK_W01.EXE was on my hard drive. Do you have a FTP site that can handle 50MB?

you won't believe this - but Streanloader, which advertises on the web "free downloads" up to 100MG", will not let you download more than 10 MG unless you buy one of their plans. I'd like to report them to the BBB for false advertising! |

Success! Once I installed a newer copy of OLEAUT32.DLL in my Windows\System directory, all my problems were solved including ability to scan with PSC 1210(following Jim Dell's instruction), ability to view certain pop-up links which just hung in the past and the ability to perform Microsoft Update. |

My problem is finally resolved. I worked to HP support and determined the problem was the Compatibility mode on the HP Director Properties. When I unchecked the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" field and then rebooted, my scanning started working. I'm glad this is over. |
